Also look at enrollment figures of the private schools and the size of their endowments. It is much easier to find 1200 students than 5000. And even more easier when your endowment makes CNU's endowment look like pocket change.
comparing the endowment at a public institution and a private institution is comparing apples to oranges unless you count the state dollars that have been provided to the public over the years - private colleges rely on endowment earnings to subsidize some portion of operating expenses (including financial aid to offset the cost differential between public and private institutions)

personally, i think it would be easier to find 5000 students at a school that costs $22K (and has a small endowment which is mostly geared toward awarding financial aid) than it would be to find 1200 students at a school that costs $40+K - the fact is, there are simply a lot more people who have the means to afford the lower cost school

Good points Narch. And if we had the time and the data, I'm sure we could put together a nice thesis for a PhD on the topic. There are way too many things to consider on this topic in order to get down to an apples to apples basis. From my perspective, I have seen kids set on CNU when another private school whips out their large endowment and the kid gets a free ride. And for that student and his family, what an awesome deal!! CNU can't compete when that happens. And I'm not even talking athletes. Another disadvantage CNU has with the small endowment is that they are competing with UVA and W&M for students.  UVA has an endowment of $5billion. So they have the benefit, like you said, of being able to use that endowment less for operating expenses and more on scholarships and financial aid. Similarly, once a private school's endowment reaches a certain level then they can start to bite into the public school's recruiting efforts by offsetting costs. I know of people who sent their kids to private schools in VA and paid the full $43k minus some very minor token aid. I can also tell you the names of kids playing sports at ODAC schools because they got a free ride off the endowment. So, there are benefits of both private and public schools. I view this long debated topic as the equivalent to Ford vs Chevy. People will have their views and not be wrong. Also, I come from the public school world and am heavily involved in it, so I am more knowledgeable about it than you are. At the same time, you have much more knowledge about how private schools function than I will ever know. The good aspect of all of this is that we can have an open dialogue. At least, I enjoy it.

Ryan and Allen it would be interesting to see if the football team demographics are representative of the entire college.

and more to Ryan's question about ODU.....if you are talking talent of football players, there is no comparison or competition for the same athletes. ODU is now a BCS school in Conference USA. Any footballer in that caliber of talent is way above the D3 non-scholarship world. That would be similar to saying Syracuse impacts SUNY-Brockport recruiting. Or Boston College impacting Maine Maritime.

When they started, however, they were a FCS school. They will indeed be FBS -- in 2013. It's not like they will be Syracuse or Boston College, however. That's a bit optimistic.

That s true, Pat.  I way over rated ODU. They were a good FCS school, and in a short time. FBS is a different story altogether.

Allen C

Allen: I could have miscounted, but from that same roster, I count only eight players from Northern Virginia. One more from D.C. itself, and just three from Maryland suburbs to D.C.

Ryan...I still am coming up with 20-21 players from Northern Va. Not counting DC, or Md. Harper is from Northern Va., and I would think that he would be inclined to work that area.

in a few years, the only way they'll be playing is in the playoffs - if that happens, i won't care for the first year or two since i just want mu to get there (the playoffs) at this point (once they get there for a few years i'll get greedy and start expecting playoff wins...baby steps :))

Narch, taking any road trips with the Monarchs this season?  In particular, MU vs GCQ under the lights in Greensboro on Sept. 8 ...

Can someone explain how the poll  points are arrived at...I assume that a first place vote is worth 8, 2nd plce 7 etc...maybe I am completely off. Please outline how the voting process and points work.

i think it's 7 for first, 6 for second...etc. since you can't vote for your own team

For your enjoyment Narch.
thanks for 9:09 of pure football enjoyment! the kid has moves on moves and power on power...a total beast

if i was paid to evaluate talent for an nfl team, i'd look at this film and say "that kid can dominate inferior competition!"...let's face it, the austrian football league is probably equivalent to a mid to upper level d3 conference

then i'd ask myself "could my 5th best rb do the same?" and i'd probably answer "yes...and he plays on every special team and knows our system and is every bit as fast, every bit as strong, every bit as agile and 2 years younger than this guy"

tunde should continue to pursue the dream until his health and/or finances no longer allow him to do so, though, 'cause i love watching him run over, through and around guys and always have (except when those guys were wearing green & gold)

Narch is correct.  CNU got six votes for 1st (6 x 7 = 42) and one vote for second (1 X 6) for 48 points.  Since you can't vote for your own team, the total points should be the sum of 1-7 (28) x 8 coaches = 224 (48 + 43 +29 + 27 + 26 + 23 + 21 + 7).
