Just wondering....Is this year going to be appreciably different, or are we looking at the same old thing.....Some good games, but in the end, CNU takes the title? Is there anyway there could be a new representative in the playoffs? Judging by the USA South Coaches poll, it looks loke that is the expectation. What team in the conference can challenge CNU?

Of course I think Ferrum will be good, but they have lost a lot on offense, starting with Mayo. They have had a decent recruiting year, but they likely will be about the same as last year. Who else can challenge?

I'm so glad we don't have to face Mayo again. The guy was good!

Not sure yet, but I'll let you know once I finish my USA South writeups for Kickoff 2012.

Oh yeah, and buy Kickoff! :)

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

I will buy it...no doubt... Will you still be covering the Mid Atlantic? I hope so. How's the baby?

Sorry to see Mayo go, but his replacement is quite good. (Little known fact) I work at CNU...(hard to believe I bet), and I worked this spring with Mike King who played last year for the Captains. When I told him who was replacing Mayo...Tim Reynolds, he paused for a second, and then he asked where did he go to high school? I said Yorktown High School in Arlington. He immediatly said Oh Yeah...I know EXACTLY who he is...he is good. Very Fast!

He did not see a lot of playing time last year, but he did well when he was in there. I doubt he has the arm strength or the moves that Mayo had, but I understand he is right speedy.

No, I'm not going to be writing a weekly column this fall. Baby + grad school makes that tougher than I should probably take on. However, I am going to be editing the new columnist (you won't be disappointed with him!), so I'll still have my ear to the ground for the Mid-Atlantic.

For Kickoff, I'm doing the USA South team capsules (I've usually done ODAC's in the past) and USAC feature story, which is on new-to-the-conference LaGrange. I'll also still be doing the Friday Triple Take predictions on the blog, which are always fun.

Re: the baby. He's doing very well. Since I work nights, I get to be home during the days with him and playing with him while his mom only sees him in the early evening at bedtime. So I'm officially the "fun parent"! :)

Some of you may already know about this. I thought I would pass along the very sad news about former CNU basketball coach and AD...CJ Woollum. I made sure I had permission from CNU before posting this. I am also posting a link for anyone who wishes to sign his guestbook. From the website Caringbridge.com I quote.....

"On July 23rd doctors found a tumor in CJ's brain. It was later identified as glioblastoma multiforme - an aggressive type of brain cancer. Surgery was completed on July 27th to remove the bulk of the tumor." A subsequent journal post indicates that CJ is now in rehab.

There is not enough room on this board to post all the accomplishments of Coach Woollum. Over 500 wins in 26 seasons. Numerous All-Americans. A player drafted by the NBA. Golf Coach. Mentor to the entire CNU Athletic department. CNU athletics grew to national recognition in just about every sport under his guidance.

Please take a moment to pray for Coach Woollum and his family!

'85 - tough news for the cnu family, as well as the usasac - by elevating the cnu athletic program, coach woolum has served the conference well - my thoughts are with he, his family and the entire cnu family as he battles for his life

on a less serious and much less important note, i'm hearing good things from monarch camp...i am tempering my expectations because...well...i've heard good things out of camp before and been disappointed...but it appears that the qb position is sorting itself out and reber is in drivers seat right now - there is a new rb who has the kind of speed that the monarchs have been missing at that position for the last few years...could be a nice compliment to flanagan...maybe our own version of thunder and lightning - as expected, the wr corps is deep and talented, as well - what happens up front could tell the story of the season for mu...if the line can develop and gel, there are weapons on the offense

on the defensive side, i'm hearing that one of the returning DL has come back hungry and ready to play, and the LB corps is solid with returners and newcomers...there is a new DL/LB who has folks excited, as well - i haven't heard much about the db's, but there is some returning talent there

going into the season, kicking jobs were up in the air, and i haven't rec'd an update on the special teams

i haven't seen the team with my own eyes yet (and probably won't until sept. 1), but i'm cautiously optimistic - if these improvements are legit and with a little luck, this could be a 5 or 6 win season for the green & gold - i'd sure be happy with that type of progress vs. the last few years...

Thanks Narch. I noticed in his guest book on that website, a very thoughtful post from coach David Smith at MU.

What you Panthers got this year Mr Allen C?

Strong in places, but lost a lotof players. D should be good, but O backfield and line are young, and inexperienced.

Overall, I think they will get stronger as rhe season goes on.

Not a Captain, just a State Employee.....Happy to have a job in a tough economy. It is a really nice place to work, but make no mistake about it, I will be sitting on the Ferrum side on Oct. 6th. ;D
