Narch,

What is your take on Methodist 1st game this year?
didn't see mu play in person, but i've heard from multiple sources that they dominated louisburg...they have played lc in pre-season for the last few years, and they haven't dominated them yet...this might mean lc is down (could be the case) or mu is up...we'll see

i'm not sure what to think about sova...they went 1-1 vs ncwc and ferrum last year, and mu did, as well - sova is different, though, because they might have a handful of really good players leave for/return from mission trips and be a very different team this year

Unfortunately, AU was picked dead last. Looks like a long season is ahead.

Been having too many of those.......Hopefully they can pull something out of the hat and be competive.

ooooh. Trash talking!! Love it!!!! BRB!!

CNU85

Here we go Mosh!! (BTW - this is just fun trash talking!)

GC record vs CNU 0-12

Avg score CNU - 32 GC 11

CNU scores more than 30 in half the contests. Under 20 in only 1 game.
GC has scored over 20 only twice. In more than half (7) of the games, GC scored 10 or less.

Although - I will give you this...the last 2 years have been way too close for me!!! A 5 pt Victory in 2011 and 6 points last year at CNU. This year is at GC.
In the last 2 contests GC has scored 28% of the total points they have scored against CNU in the 12 year series.

13 will be an unlucky number for someone!

Captains at MC have been named for this year.
Two things really stand out this year:
1) Two are 2x captains in RS-SR Jamie Owen and SR Travis Felder
2) Two are sophomores. QB Evan Pittenger and DT Zach Capehart
The fifth is LB Dylan Wolfenbarger, another fifth year guy who I think will have an All-American year.  He's about a 100 tackles short of breaking the career record at MC.  With 135 tackles last year, barring injury, he should get it.
When I was there, we voted on captains in Spring, but with this new staff voting is at the end of camp (obviously).  I wasn't a proponent of late voting originally, but with voting so late you really see who the leaders are. After watching the intrasquad scrimmage yesterday, I'd say I've warmed up to it.

2 snaps. Became eligible later. Wow! Truly a coach with integrity. My hat's off to the man! Extremely impressive.

I wonder if a) the NCAA let the situation be with the vacated win, and b) if many times in D3 stuff like this gets over looked.

As a graduate of Averett University, and a four-year member of the Cougar football program, it is tough to hear that we have fallen on hard times...however, being picked last in a preseason poll is far from the end of the season...Coach D will put his players in a position to be successful, and it will be up to them to perform to the standards that have been set by former Cougar teams...I am excited to see how things turn out and I wish every team the best of luck in the coming season!!

AU!!!
My most fond memories remain in Danville, VA.  AU!!!

Basically, that is all you can ask from a coach. If he is doing everything possible to put the young men in position to be successful, it is then up to the players to perform on the field. Now as far as recruiting, you need support from the school, maybe a new uniform, facility, etc...to ge the talent their.

You are absolutely right, the support has to be there in order to get the best recruits.  There has been a drastic change since I graduated in 2009.

I believe that they are building a new football stadium, which should help in bringing recruits in.  I remember my recruiting visit, my first thought of the "Cougar Den" was that it reminded me of my high school practice field.  While I would have loved to have played at a larger venue, my ultimate deciding factor on attending the school was Coach Dunlevy.  He is a fantastic man, as well as a coach.  I can honestly say that in 2009, our group was far from the most talented bunch, but we bought into his system and we played for him.  I know that success is largely correlated to recruiting in college football, but unity is just as important.  I think that Averett will surprise a few people this year, or at least I hope they do.

I will be in Maryville to watch the Cougars play the Scots.  I am very excited to see this game as it was one of my favorite places to play while I was in college.  It should make for a very fun weekend.

It will definitely be a fun weekend. The Maryville/Averett game is one the "newer" older guys love and circle on the schedule every year. Always a fun game and the series is pretty even.
