I would think at least Pennsylvania. Isn't Coach Kelchner from there?

CNU doesn't need to recruit from out of state.  It is a public institution that happens to be in one of the best regions for high school football in the nation.  All CNU has to do is take the leftovers from the Hampton, Norfolk State, VTech, and UVA and they will field a great football team every year.

Problem is, those leftovers can't get into CNU....the admissions standards have changed tremendously through the years and, as we all know, the majority of the really good athletes usually don't have the best grades.

If it were that simple, shouldn't CNU be mentioned in the same class as UWW, UMU, and UMHB?

Good point, Scots13....geographical location and state tuition doesn't necessarily translate into victories....there are a lot of variables that go into having a successful program.

I still think talent has a lot to do with it and even though I personally have never viewed a statistic that could correlate talent with grade point average, my personal experience from my time on the gridiron and watching some of these young guys over the years tell me that talent level and grade point average have an negative correlation with the exception of a few outliers. Yet, it is still up to the individual and coaches to help the individual reach their highest potential off and on the gridiron.

Back to the original point, CNU should not have to recruit too many students out of state to field a good football team.  There is talent galore and really good D3 talent in the Tidewater area.  Any student that could get into VaTech, UVA, or Hampton but may not be getting the playing time can get into CNU.

Do you think upstart power ODU is diluting the talent a bit in the tidewater area?

I just did a quick check of their 2014 Roster. 30 players are from either the Hampton Roads (757) area or the Richmond area. I didn't include Northern Va

So I would say, yes...those 30 would be playing somewhere else....but not necessarily in Va.

Another item to consider is that Virginia is 38th in the country as far as state support of universities. NC is 10th and MD is 11th. In order to offset huge budget cuts, colleges and universities have to raise tuition and fees; especially for out of state students. For many universities in VA an out of state student has to dish out $40k. Similar to an in state private school. A quick internet search has the following % of operating budgets supported by the great Commonwealth of VA.

UVA - 5.8% (might as well be a private school)
VT - 19%
CMI - 17%
George Mason - 21%
W&M - 11%
VCU - just says less than 30%
CNU is around 20%

A friend of mine also told me that SC is similar to Va as far as % of operating budget funded by the state.

What does all this mean? To me it means it is August and we've been without college football way too long!!!!!!!!!! Let classes begin in 2 weeks and let's get to opening night!!!!

I looked at CNU's 2013 roster...all but 3 players are from VA or played their senior year at a VA high school.  Again, there is no need for CNU to recruit outside of the state of VA unless it is to get one or two gifted players who can afford to pay out of state tuition.

True. And they seem to recruit very well at the High School AA level.

Is VA back to 3 classes in public school ball? I know a few years ago they went to 6. I attended a private school and we had 3 divisions back then but there are 4 now.

It is still 6.

Hey you USASAC lunatics. If you guys can stop putting bodies in unmarked shallow graves along Highway 70 and I-95 for a minute. ;)

HSCTiger74 over in the ODAC is going to run THE pick-ems. As I know many of you skulk around the board I would like to remind you that if you run a USASAC board then we can cross  pollinate.  :)

i'm a little late to the party on this one (the d3football.com pre-season top 25 has been out for a while, now), but you've got to love the disrespect the usasac gets on a national level...guilford is coming off a 6-4 season where they lost 52-0 to hsc and gave averett their only win on the season and gets 5 votes in the top 25, just 30 fewer than maryville and 5 more than methodist and cnu - all of these teams won 8 games, cnu beat beat hsc, m'ville played hsc a lot closer than 52-0 and mu beat gcq head-to-head - that's a lot of respect for a guilford program that hasn't proven much

ahh...who cares...it's a pre-season poll - we get to settle it on the field in a few weeks :), but i think this conference is going to have 4 or 5 teams that can win against 80-85% of the teams in the country on any given week this year - ncwc, greensboro and ferrum always have athletes and can bite you if you don't play your "a" game, and averett can't be any worse than they were last year...should be fun!

I never thought of that, but the way you put it seems logical..at least to my USAC mind. But I think the reason MU or CNU didn't receive any votes pre season might have to be historically the conference gets out to a slow start. There's only room for one, and that's my Scots.

I'm looking forward to the week 11 game in Fayetteville. It might turn out to be the de facto championship game. I'll be in attendance as I know you will be as well.
