I heard MC put the defensive beat down on VUL today. Apparently a shut out with several forced turnovers and (again, what I heard...) 12 sacks. I wish BSC was the opponent today instead of whatever was on the field.
Offense showed signs of life, but with only 6 practices and 2 in full pads, timing will come. More than a handful of missed opportunities for big plays.
Early word going around is this year's freshman class might be the best MC has had. I guess we will find out in 2 weeks at Berry.

Any other scrimmages today? Berry and HC again this year?

HC did have a scrimmage at Berry Saturday night. That's about all I can tell you though. I had headed to the west side of Alabama for one last family visit before the season starts and didn't get to make the trip. Haven't heard anything about how it went.

Berry has me feeling some type of way. On one hand they will be a team full of seniors that went 7-3 last year, and on the other they are a team that MC slapped around Week 1 last year with a team full of juniors. Do they just start slow out of camp, or do we have their number like the Hawks have MC's?

Please keep the city of Maryville in your thoughts and prayers. Maryville PD lost a police officer yesterday responding to a call.

Don't get overly hyped about a good performance against VUL ... to be kind, they probably aren't very good based on facilities and past record.  Not sure how they can even field a team to be honest.

Yeah I know. 3 reasons for my excitement:
1. It's nearly September
2. MC lost a lot of production on defense due to graduation or kids not coming back
3. I was hoping someone involved with VUL would wander on the board and read it. I'm assuming the coaching staff runs the VUL football Twitter feed-- they basically called out D3 football and said the scrimmage would be a breeze.

Well, that (the Tweet) was dumb ... I haven't seen them come close against any well-organized college team.  I even read a story last year where the school was in arrears on a hotel they rented to use as a dorm and all the student residents got evicted with little to no notice.  Not sure why anyone would want to go there.

When I first heard about that school last year, I did some research. Their main page would not open on my server at work because their .edu page was full of viruses and issues.

Doesn't surprise me ... not sure if they are accredited ... probably not.

From what I could find, they are a church affiliated HBCU with around 200 students. NCAA NAIA USCAA---nobody wants them so they call themselves a hybrid of FCS, D2, and NAIA. It's the damnedest thing I've heard of.

Has anyone been able to find a schedule or roster? I haven't found one yet.

That school basically still exists because they have a football team. It's the only reason they get enough tuition dollars to keep going. They have no athletic accreditation,  the barest academic accreditation,  and I'd love to know their retention rate. I don't want to call it a degree factory because it demeans the kids that work to get one who aren't at fault, but it exists in the part of the spectrum of our higher education system that is very sad.

HansenRatings

Their lack of accreditation has landed VUL on the NCAA's non-countable opponents list. A regular season game against them wouldn't count towards a team's record and no statistics would count toward official NCAA records.

Hawks88

Hawks are happy to get away from Pineville with the opening win on the road 52-49. Too many turnovers for both teams and we have some things to tighten up on defense.
On to the home opener next Saturday night against Birmingham-Southern. A lot of work still to do.
Go Hawks! Beat BSC!

narch

mu pulls out a late win against apprentice today, 24-20...to be honest, they didn't look great on either side of the ball - offense struggled to move it at times, and the defense gave up too many big plays...could be a long season if things don't get on track...

DGPugh

;D Hawks... now and then, we have barn burners in Pineville
