Great effort by the hawks today with a good win over a solid team.

Pretty solid win for the Hawks over Methodist. Still too many penalties and turnovers that need to be cleaned up but the offense finally got into a groove in the second half and moved the ball more consistently. Another outstanding job by the defense keeping pressure on the QB most of the day to keep him and those talented receivers in control. Methodist did have several drops though that could have made it a different game.
We lost LB Karl Dorn for the season to an injury in practice this week but some of the young depth guys seemed to play well in his place. Hopefully they can keep doing well going forward.

Long road trip next week to Southern Virginia. Need to take care of business and bring the win home.

Go Hawks!

Things got out of hand in the second half in Alabama.  Huntingdon could run the ball at will and got good pressure on Methodist's QB.  Good win for the Hawks.  NCWC forced 3 turnovers and stopped Averett on 3 different 4th down attempts.  Running back ripping off over 200 helped also I would imagine.  Maryville got in the win column.  The Brevard game was closer than I would have anticipated but three picks helped the Pride keep it close (somewhat).  This week:

I'll take NCWC, Methodist, and Brevard at home and Huntingdon on the road.  Going forward the Hawks two hardest remaining games (on paper), Averett and NCWC, are at home.  I think the Hawks can run the table in conference this year but I know there is a lot of football left to play.

Good win for the Hawks today at SVU. Offense looked very good with 497 total yds, 334 rushing. Good to build a good lead and able to play a lot of young guys in the 4th.
Homecoming next week with what could be a tough game with Averett so a lot of work to be done.

Go Hawks!

I guessed all the winners correctly this past weekend.  Huntingdon is starting to roll.  It looks like Brevard found a new QB.  I can't tell if Greensboro has improved on D or if the past two opponents have kinda coasted to victories.  Methodist looked somewhat complete with the win this past weekend.  The highlight was SR WR Praylow who touched the ball 16 times (rushing, receiving, KR, and PR) to the tune of 245 yards and 2 TDs.  Averaged just over 15 yards per touch.

This weekend NCWC beats Maryville at home.  Southern Virginia gets their first conference win against Greensboro.  Brevard goes to LaGrange and gets the win.  The biggest game of the weekend goes on in Alabama.  Averett comes to town coming off their bye week.  If the Cougars gave up over 250 yards rushing to NCWC I would figure the Hawks will have success on the ground.  The question will be if Averett can sling it around on Huntingdon's secondary.  I believe Huntingdon will likely win by double digits but hope for a good game regardless.

You couldn't ask for better weather for a homecoming football game, not a cloud in the sky, 70 degrees and breezy. You couldn't ask for a much better, hard fought game between two evenly matched teams as the Hawks pull it out and solidify their hold on the driver's seat to the conference lead.
Trip to Greensboro up next . Need to take care of business and keep taking them one at a time.

Go Hawks!

Averett kept it pretty close in Alabama.  The two interceptions that Huntingdon's QB threw had to help.  Congratulations to Maryville for the upset on the road.  Congratulations to SOVA for their first conference win.  Brevard gets a win and a player on the D3 team of the weak.

This weekend I believe Huntingdon will win rather easily in Greensboro.  Brevard beats SOVA at home.  Maryville get two wins in a row this weekend against Lagrange.  Averett has lost 2 games in a row and Methodist is coming off their bye.  If you look at common opponents Averett has better results (closer loss to Huntingdon and bigger win against Maryville).  Averett has a better passing game and a better ranked defense.  Methodist has a better rushing offense and is forcing one more turnover a game and Methodist has only turned the ball over 3 times against the 12 for Averett.  If the Monarchs can limit Averett through the air and force a few turnovers then I will take Methodist for a close road win under the lights.

Hawks take care of business in Greensboro. A couple of late scores, including a pick-six, make the final look better but we let them hang around way too long before pulling away in the second half. Too many penalties for the Hawks was the main culprit with several that killed drives. Something we definitely need to clean up.
Big one at home next week with NCWC.

The Monarchs had just enough in the tank to get the win in Danville.  They jumped out to the early lead but let the Cougars get back into the game in the second period.  The Hawks got the big win.  Maryville has it rolling the last two weeks.  If you like a defensive struggle the Brevard SOVA game was right up your alley.  286 offensive yards and 10 points between both teams.

This weekend I'll take Lagrange to win at home against Greensboro.  Averett to win on the road at SOVA.  Huntingdon to cleanup the turnovers and beat NCWC at home.  In Fayetteville it is homecoming and the Tornados are coming to town.  Brevard is giving up 8 PPG in conference, allowing just over 205 yards of offense, and averaging 4.5 sacks per game.  In the other side their offense is only averaging 280 yards and scoring 22 PPG.  If Methodist can get to at least 24 points I believe they will get the win.  I will take the Monarchs to get the win at home.

3 weeks left and here are my predictions/candidates for OPOTY, DPOTY, OROTY, and DROTY.  I don't know that any one of these picks is a lock at this point.

OPOTY candidates:
Landon Cotney QB Huntingdon.  True dual threat.  Averages 150 yards passing per game to go with 8 TDs and 97 yards rushing per game to go along with 11 TDs
Bryce Jackson QB Averett.  330 yards passing per game and 20 TDs
Jarrod Mosby WR Averett.  D3Football team of the week once.  110 yards receiving per game and 10 TDs and add in jut over 20 yards in the return game
There is not a running back that warrants inclusion on the list in my opinion.

DPOTY candidates:
Steffon Canady LB Brevard.  Twice D3Football team of the week.  9.5 sacks, 15 TFL, 4 FF, 2 FR, and 50 total tackles
Jerome Bass DL Brevard.  6 sacks, 16.5TFL, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT and 49 total tackles
Casey Peppers LB Huntingdon.  3.5 sacks, 6.5 TFL, 1 FR, and 62 total tackles
Tucker Spence LB Huntingdon.  7.5 sacks, 11 TFL, 1 FF and 42 total tackles
Jason Siaosi LB SOVA.  2 sacks, 5 TFL, 2 FF, 2 INT, and 84 total tackles
Dante Anderson DB Brevard.  2.5 sacks, 4 TFL, 1 FF, 2 INT, and 55 total tackles.
Joc Pledger was a pre-season All-American and one time D3Football team of the week.  His stats don't stick out but that could be because no one is willing to throw his way.

OROTY candidates (I did my best to identify FR worthy based on stats and OROTW):
Trevon Crank RB NCWC.  72 rushes, 417 yards rushing, and 4 TDs in only 4 games
Tyler Coleman QB LaGrange.  65% comp, 499 passing yards, and 5 TDs in 3 games (played in a 4th but only threw 2 passes)
LJ Flint WR LaGrange.  14 receptions, 335 receiving yards, 3 TDs
Shawn Watlington RB Averett.  61 carries, 333 yards rushing, and 2 TDs.  Add in 15 receptions for for 120 yards

DROTY candidates (I did my best to identify FR worthy based on stats and DROTW):
Max Steele LB Greensboro.  67 total tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 FR, and 1 INT
Cameron Grady DB LaGrange.  5 INT, 2 PBU, .5 TFL, and 22 total tackles
Jaden Jones DL LaGrange.  6 sacks, 11 TFL, 1 FF, and 40 total tackles
Jamarcus Dunn LB Maryville.  39 total tackles, 3 TFL, and 2 FF
DeIrvin Grate DB Methodist.  2 INT, 9 PBU, 1 TFL, and 19 total tackles

Ill take Cotney for OPOTY, Canady for DPOTY, Crank for OROTY, and Steele for DPOTY

Excellent effort by the defense for Huntingdon today holding NC Wesleyan to 116 yards of offense and not allowing any scores. The offense was productive with 446 yards but the 4 turnovers held us back. The Hawks keep playing well enough to win but we still haven't really played a complete game it seems like.
Another big one with Maryville next week with a chance to clinch the AQ.

Go Hawks!

I'm sure it doesn't happen very often when a team is out gained by 100 yards of offense and loses the turnover battle 2-0 and still wins.  Somehow Methodist was able to overcome this and find a way to win on homecoming.  Brevard's defense was everything advertised.  Brevard's RB Yoder had 220 yards rushing including a 97 and a 60 yard gainer.  Both of Methodist's INTs were negated by a good defensive stand one resulting in a 4th down stop and the other a 3 & out.  The Monarchs made me sweat it out on Brevard's final drive when the moved the ball 54 yards in 42 seconds all the way to the 11 yd line.  A nice breakup by a FR DB sealed the win.

This week NCWC comes off their bye and beats SOVA.  Methodist travels to Greensboro and wins.  Averett beats LaGrange at home.  Huntingdon beats Maryville at home remaining perfect in conference.
