Its funny you mention that. You will have to ask him about his McDaniel Tailgate/ bathroom experience at BC this year. All I got to say is thank god for cell phones, otherwise the poor boy would have been locked inside the hallowed halls til daylight. :D :D :D

Since Llama is lurking on this board........

OK USASAC & ODAC Fans - toss up topic for debate:

Which is the strongest conference top to bottom this year?

After 8 weeks.................

USASAC - Three fairly strong teams battling it out for the conference crown in Ferrum, Methodist & CNU with two solid and improving teams in NCW & Averett.  Three teams at 1-7 overall (2 were expected to stuggle while Shenendoah has underachieved compared to preseason expectations).

ODAC - Repeat champ B-water riding high after early loss with HS having a couple of losses and W&L having a solid year.  Four other teams appear to be struggling.

Head to Head - USASAC leads 5-3  - however several of these wins were by top USASAC teams (Ferrum / Methodist) over E&H and Guilford.  2 of the USASAC losses were by Shenandoah to B'water & Catholic.

Remember - we are talking strongest conference - top to bottom.  Let the debate begin!

Three Sails - I think it's the USAC this year, but I see improved head-to-head record by the ODAC in 2006.

abnrgr

Damn you Sails.  ;)We were talking along that fence that was going to bring down the wrath of PC.

You bring up a good point. Is the argument for heritage, you know the ODAC schools being around for many years and the upstart fairly new football programs in your conference. Or is just because this year the dreaded Panthers are strong? this year. Forget it I am in DC and I am flying in the AM and the escort services got my cell number....probably Papi giving it out

Your argument that the USASC is stronger this year is valid. This year. But I think as the new coaches at EH and GC get their own recruiting classes in I think the ODAC will emerge top to bottom as strong and both conferences will beat the hell out each other in the next couple of years. Methodist has always been on the fringe to start winning big.

If the BC and FC boys meet in the show I think it will be interesting.

I still pull for the Monarchs and Pride as they are from NC.

Sorry somebody like Kid will argue you into the ground with the math.

three sails - don't forget the su loss to cua was a game they won 12-0...who knows how the ineligible player may have affected the outcome, but i doubt it would have been enough to get cua 13 pts

here is my conjecture...i think bc is better than any usasac team...by a hair - i think fc/mc/cnu are very similar to w&l and hsc...those would be pick 'em games - i think au & ncwc are better than gcq and cua and i think su, gc and m'ville are all better than rmc or ehc - overall i think there is more depth in the usasac, but both are very close - i agree with abnrgr about the new odac coaches...they could turn some of those bottom tier teams around

abnrgr - i heard that lmc has discussed getting back in the football game, and i've heard they have talked about going d3...could be pure rumor, though...

No they dropped football after playing at the NAIA level for a couple of years. I was a coach there as a matter of fact on the 93 team. We got pounded that year playing Elon and the Terriers laid the wood to us.

I left to go back to my real job and they went 6-4 the next year. I was getting ready for Homecoming in 1995 or 6 and got a flyer in the mail about the (gag) Soccer game at Homecoming. That's how I found out that football was dropped. The administration (it was rumored) said it was not worth the extra 100 students of dubious backgrounds. IE: Street kids like me. Now they are mostly more affluent students going there. I hear you have to read and write too!

If I win the lotto they will have football again at the DII level with Narch as my Public info officer, MOSH and MC55 as position coaches and I will be in the stands checking out the drunks from BC. ;) Just joking BC.
Thanks for the LMC football history lesson.  I knew I hadn't heard anything out of them in quite a while, but I didn't know it was that long.  When I was at GCQ (70-74), there was some talk about dropping football, but fortunately cooler heads prevailed.   I didn't play football ( I played soccer lol), but I know what you mean - homecoming should be a football game!  GCQ lost 32 in a row by the fall of '73 before beating Randolph-Macon and, as you said, got tired of losing to Carson-Newman, Furman, Wofford and Elon.  Hope you win the lottery!  I'd make a good SID too, you know!

Thanks Narch. I will be  looking for that job starting in the AM. I have been snooping out in CO for a High School job. I am sick of DOD and FEMA and the rest of the morons "r" us.

LMC is a tough place to play in the snow. That's how we laid the wood to FC and The Tenn Vols JV team. Who as a matter of fact played the NC State high school player of the year at QB. Damn them.

However one of my dreams is my only dream. Coach at the place you played and graduated  (within 8 years) ;) I coached at Havelock High where I played and Brian played and that was the job I loved

TCHeadhunter is correct - no way CNU moves out of d3 anytime soon.  In addition to his points - If I am not mistaken, NCAA won't allow a school to take one sport "up" - the entire athletic program has to go.  That's a major financial commitment.  Also, I believe that Title VII won't allow athletic scholarships to be offered to a football program without having a balance of scholarships offered to female sports as well.  As far as d2 is concered, there are only 2 d2 schools left in VA and both are historically minority schools in an established conference - no natural tie in for CNU there.  Only realistic option is a big jump to d1aa - but that would be decades away if ever IMHO.  CNU has no current plans to increase their student population large enough to support that jump, there is not a sufficient alumni base to support that move and not enough $ going to be devoted to the athletic program to make that a realistic possibility.  After all, ODU is looking at something like $30mil just to add football and the associated female sports needed to meet Title VII requirements.

Sails,
Here is a non-biased Laz Index comparison. Looks to be about even?

Old Dominion Athletic Conference   0.369    (25-30)    49.06

Bridgewater VA         0.546            6 1            57.80
Hampden-Sydney      0.535            6 2            59.41
Washington & Lee     0.490            5 3            56.43
Guilford                   0.325            3 5            45.64
Catholic                  0.293            2 6            46.82
Randolph-Macon       0.211            2 6            40.23
Emory & Henry         0.185            1 7            37.07

USA South Conference    0.367    (31-33)    48.99

Ferrum                              0.592             8 0            61.26
Methodist                          0.513             6 2            56.38
Christopher Newport            0.486             5 3            57.51
Averett                             0.423             5 3            50.90
North Carolina Wesleyan       0.311             3 5            46.26
Maryville                            0.218             1 7            41.06
Shenandoah                       0.217             2 6            39.83
Greensboro                        0.174             1 7            38.68

Of note though is that if Ferrum played at home against Bridgewater they would currently be 4.5 point favorites.

llama - thanks for the comparison - not sure i understand the laz index entirely, but i would add an "of note"...the last place usasac team lost by one point to the 4th place odac team (and said odac team needed some 4th quarter heroics to pull off that narrow victory) - while i think both conferences are close, i'm not sure i agree that the odac is stronger (as laz appears to think...higher numbers are better, right?)

Thanks LLama
Great Info.  I think your right that USAC has the edge at this moment, But the ODAC has the history.  Also you have to take into account the fact that E&H had laid a big goose egg until last week.  Who would have ever seen that coming! That really skews the rankings you just computed.  Also the USAC has 3 recently new teams.  They really should have the weaker div.  I do emember the day when we would take care of business at E&H, BC, RMC, even Salisbury and Wesley, but I am not sure it is a slam dunk anymore.  FC now has to share the talent pool w/ CNU and SU.
