Greensboro 13 Marrs Hill 38.

The score is only part of the game.  I will tell you this Greensboro will not finish in last place this year.  Way to play hard the whole time against a D-II school.  That rb #8 is a horse. the real differnce in the game, (QB 12 had 28 points on rushing TD's, but #8 got them there)

narch, I'm not sure what'll happen in Fayetteville next week, but the Quakers looked sharp today.  Honestly, other than the one interception and some balls the Guilford receivers just flat out dropped, Ferrum could not stop the Guilford passing attack.  There are a lot of options for Vogelbach (Barnette, Joyner, Rushing, Vaughn) plus some new-found rushing out of the FB position and some nice catches from a freshman TE (#80).  Although the Defense gave up 35 today, they looked better than that.  There was the 74 yard run by Pitts and a TD immediately following a fluke downing of the ball when the GC's punter had to go down on his knee to catch a low snap.  I think the defensive effort today was about 21 points, so they just need to work on a few mistakes.  Should be interesting next week.   Even though the game is on the road, I think it helps GC to have a game under their belt and hurts MC to be their opener.   Not sure when it'll happen, but I can sincerely see Vogelbach getting 7 or 8 TD passes in a game this year if they're needed to win.  Peace

Are you trying to turn my hair gray in one fell swoop, because you are succeeding, Hasanova!!  It's like Jeckyl and Hyde (sp) -- so crappy in that scrimmage and then so good against Ferrum.  I might get too nervous to make the brownies (just kidding!!!).  Sounded like a solid win!!  And you all were in the sunlight while we were slogging in the rain.  It would have been miserable except that the guys were playing so well today.  Who could complain about a little rain, OK a lot of rain, OK 2 full days of rain, but 41 - 0 gives one a suntan in the rain  :) :) :)
Brownies for Film Day--Now there's a Slogan I can live with!!!:)  Go EAGLES!

CNU85

Pat C - thanks for the update. I was going to make the game, but Ernesto changed my plans. I listened on the radio. It was very painful. Coach K said it best in the post game - paraphrasing - this was the most pathetic game in the history of CNU football.

I figured Orihel would light up CNU's LB corp. But he didn't need to. All he had to do to score was watch CNU try to punt the ball, hang on to the ball, run the ball. The D seemed to play well for CNU. Some will say that D wins championships - but it should be added, only if the offense can gain more than 36 yards in total offense. -84 rushing. 51 of those were sacks, so the rest of it (-33) was pitiful. I don't care if you play the best D in the history of football, you should gain more than 36 yards.

I agree - next week may not be any better.

Hey, olinemom.  Not trying to color anyone's hair, but I honestly see it coming!  :)  Guilford was running about five (good, by the way) receivers yesterday and daring Ferrum to cover all of them.  I don't know how to explain it for this one day, but it just looked very easy.  Vogelbach was 31-46 with one interception, 6 TDs and 338 yards.  No sacks, so even though the OL has been totally revamped, they protected him.  He had about 5 dropped balls that were perfectly thrown, so I think he should have been about 36 of 46 for 7 TDs.  Trenches was there, so I think he'll back me up.

The NNA scrimmage is hard to explain.  Did they have an off day, were they tired from the long trip, did they party Friday night, were the coaches deliberately sandbagging?  I'm not sure, but what enzoneking6 described from last weekend is not what I saw yesterday.

I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, so to speak, but I sincerely hope both teams are still playing well on Oct. 14.  I can tell you, without a doubt, the Guilford players are taking one game at a time, but they have certainly circled the Bridgewater game on their schedules.  I think every team wants to win them all, of course, but I believe there are four games the Quakers really want this season:  Ferrum, Greensboro, Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater.  One down.  Go Quakers!  Peace

Good job to guilford. It looks like they have found something good in vogelbach, which he made me nervous last year when we played them. Monarchs have got to put pressure on him and fast! Good quarterbacks cant do anything with someone in their face all day.

Greensboro will not be the last placed team in the conference, i agree with you there. If they keep everyone healthy, come time to start conference play, they will make some upsets this year. Look out everyone.

Shennandoah is still looking for an offense. Plyaing them last year, you could tell they missed a quarterback. We got up on them 28-0 and they are still trying to run traps, power, and iso's at us. I can see doing it if it works, but if you are that far behind you have got to throw the ball a little bit to give your team a chance, and barnes knows that they dont have a good quarterback. He also knows everyone else that plays them knows this too!

Ferrum still looks like ferrum, they will be tough. Pitts in my opinion will be player of the year this year for the USASAC. He has it all, and has a nice team to go along with it. They need to find a rythm though, when you force ferrum to come from behind, it puts them in the bind cuz they dont throw the ball alot. They run the triple option to perfection! trust me we couldnt stop it last year. They are a running team as well, but the difference in them and SU is, ferrum has a quarterback who can make something happen.

Monarchs are looking forward to the game with guilford. I am coming to that and bringing a couple of my high school football players with me. We have got to stop the pass and we have to control the game. Do not let voglebach get into a rythm. With the new additions on defense, the monarchs look real good. The whole D-line are returning all-conference players, so they need to step it up and put the heat on. Northern is the best d-lineman in the conference. I aint sayin this just cuz i played with him, but let me explain. He is quick, can read with a quickness, get off blocks, run, and oh yeah did i mention he was fast! When you make sacks from the noseguard position and make tackles in the backfield the way he does, thats just crazy. Any offensive lineman knows that when they play him, they have a long day in front of them.

Hey narch, do alumni get in free to the game? we should after the money we pay to have went to school there! How bout this for some offense for ya. My J.V. team that i coach, I run the wishone with them. Our QB is a freshman, and can read the option like crazy. We racked up 443 yards rushing the other night at our game. QB had 265, running back had 164, our fullback rumbled for 86 yds, and a couple of others got in the mix too. Turned right around and the Varsity had 400 yds total offense against swain. Tell me they didnt play defense. Lol!

Papi....you going to the game next weekend?

51 - i don't think alumni get into the games free, but i think it's only 6 bucks to get in...i know you've got that kind of scratch :)

i agree with your assesment of northern...that little dude is ALWAYS in the backfield disrupting things...he can ball

i also agree on your analysis of pitts...he's a monster when he's healthy...problem is he doesn't have the line or rb's he had last year...we'll see what happens

'nova - i think you'll see a different team this week than you did this past week - the monarchs are quicker and more athletic than ferrum on defense, and they've got some db's that will cover - i suspect that mr. vogelbach and the ol will see lots of guys in their face, 'cause you can't let him stand back there and pick guys to throw to...he'll eat you alive

i also think the monarch offense should help the defense by keeping vogelbach and co. off the field - mike hill is the best rb in the conference, in my opinion, and joseph matthews is a very solid #2 - they're running behind a solid line and they've got an inexperienced qb...sounds like the recipe for running the ball (and the clock) to me...i'm hoping it works out that way

unfortunately, i won't be there...family vacation in emerald isle was planned in advance of the schedule being announced, and i'm not paying that kind of cash for a place i'm not staying in!  i will be doing everything i can to get near a computer and listen, though

I agree.  I think Methodist will be a good test.  Unfortunately, I can't be there either, but I will be checking in on the internet.  You're right about a couple of things.  I also think the Monarchs will try to run the ball and use up clock.  I also believe the Monarch Defense will try to be in Vogelbach's face all day.  Finally, Jermaine Pitts is a fine player.  I just didn't see the balanced running attack from Ferrum that we saw last year.  Other than a few plays, their passing game was generally ineffective.  It's an important game for both teams.  Go Quakers!   Peace

GOOD NEWS ! ! !

After watching the effort The Pride put in against D2 Mars Hill, I know they are going to win several conference games, if not maybe all, this year! They may not see another QB as good as Mars Hill's Brandon Sims - he was a beast!

AND . . . I'll wager they WILL NOT LOSE this weekend!!!

ROLL PRIDE !

Allen C

Well a sad weekend for the Panthers. They still have a running game, but it appears that they are lacking a secondary. This is something CNU and Wesley figured out last year, and apparently Guilford picked up on this too.

Bridgewater in 2 weeks...Rutro Astro! Hang in there Ferrum!

GO PANTHERS!!!
BEWARE THE BLACK HATS!

Things just keep getting worse for the SU Hornets. The freshmen QB (Richard Glick) that many thought would start for Shenandoah very soon broke his leg last week in the final min's of the game and is most likley out for the rest of the year.  My GOD, what else could go wrong?  ???

here are the game notes for the SU/Bridgewater game.

Narch your heading to my neck of the woods.  Have a good trip. I have not made my mind up if I am going to make it to the game.

A slow night at work has gotten me thinking about this past weekend.

It was definitely a disappointing week for the conference. I wouldn't be bothered a bit by ending the weekend 1-6 if the games were a little less lopsided. But it's no secret that the USAC teams have really pulled out all the stops when it comes to the nonconference schedule this year.

Out of 23 nonconference games, at least six of those are against ranked teams, and four (I think) are against non-Div3 teams. Plus, Guilford, which one of the site's gurus has said is no longer a "gimme," makes an appearance against the USAC three times. In most cases, we're playing up. I don't expect the conference to be winning games right off the bat, but hopefully at this rate our teams will be able to be more accustomed in the next year or two to compete with some quicker and stronger teams. Of course, a win here and there -- even this year -- wouldn't be bad, either.

This past weekend, Ferrum was certianly a disappointment for me. I knew that there were some gaps in the passing offense and defense, but the team really was picked apart in the air. The Panthers don't have the run game this year to play each game as a shootout, so the defense really will need to step it up.

It was interesting to see the Greensboro result. They have a couple of transfers who had seen Div-II speed before, so I wasn't sure how that game would play out. Obviously, the score was pretty well out of reach, but maybe....just maybe...this toughened the Pride up a bit.

I still like Averett, and I still expect big things from that team. Sure, they were manhandled like a fish in prison, but if it's any consolation, they were manhandled by the biggest, meanest, hairiest guy in that prison. They didn't stand a chance, but as narch or someone else pointed out on the board a week or so ago, nobody else that Averett plays is going to hold a candle to Mount. The worst of the season is over; and there aren't many teams out there that can say that by Week 2.

Wesleyan showed some nice life to them, even though they did lose. There was a definitely glint of improvement there. Same with Maryville. OK, LaGrange was a first year team, but hopefully Maryville ironed out its kinks for the bigger games ahead. And CNU played as best they could against the No. 3-ranked team. CNU is in a down year, but this kind of ruined the allure that the CNU-Rowan rivalry has been creating.

And finally, there's Shenandoah. I feel bad for that team. I think that was the Hornets best chance at a win this year. Not only am I bummed for the players, but even moreso for Coach Barnes. All other things aside, if my son were to play for any coach in Div-III, I'd want it to be Barnes. That guy just has the most ideal philosophy about him, and he's the kind of person you always want to root for. I hope his team has some highs this year.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.
