15-10 Final CNU defeats No. 6 Mary Hardin-Baylor

CNU85

as Dick Enberg would say..."Oh My!!"

what a game. Absolutely the best game I've been to. After last week, I was just hoping for some respect. CNU took it to UMHB. Both teams fought hard, hit hard. CNU showed some character today. I can't wait to see the stats...I bet UMHB didn't get their 400+ yards of O. CNU hurt themselves with penalties..the one long TD pass that was called back would have sealed it a lot earlier than 40 seconds remaining. The long punt return that was called back was tough to take as a fan. Gotta stop those mistakes.

Prayers are with Matt Barcus - CNU punter. Looks like he may very well be headed to surgery tonight. Let's hope for the best!!

Considering the distance, the UMHB fan support was impressive. They're a very scary team.

Congrats to CNU.  I am very impressed.  What other scores are final.

27-11 GCQ- tough loss for the monarchs, but they will bounce back.  Defense did a great job for the most part.  The offense sounded alright but we couldn't finish drives.  Good Job GCQ, Watch out Braves!
I'm sure the Monarchs miss you this season, but they're still a good team.

Bridgewater 30, Shenandoah 0
Wesley was winning 28-17 last I heard over Averett

Wow, what an amazing game in Newport News today! CNU, you impressed the hell out of me. The Captains always seem to play tough at home -- I remembered that from the Rowan game last year, too. The players were really fired up during warmups, and I'm glad that they weren't intimidated by the big bad boys from Texas.

Did I say "wow" yet?

There's a lot to say about the game, but I'm at work right now, so I have to be prudent with my time. I might post more later. For now, though, I will echo the sentiments about the punter. I wish him the best.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

I just read the box score....

GOOSE  -fix the stats...Brain Long had a catch. I think it was given to Gooch.

Also - fix the game program.......I'll send an email.....I'm a Vice admiral, not a Captain.

Good job CNU, way to bounce back.  How's the punter... what happened?

Why dont you tell the CNU sid staff to fix it CNU85!!!!  ;)

Last I heard on Barcus, x-rays were negative for any broken bones, from what i heard, its just a deep tissue bruise.

CNU was punting from the end zone when a UMHB player came in really hard and really fast. I think he got a piece of the ball (it went about 25 yards), but the UMHB guy plowed into the punter's leg. The punter just collapsed and never got back up. I imagine it was a lot like taking a 230 lbs baseball bat to your leg.

Fans were pissed because a flag wasn't called (I can't/won't attempt to make an objective call on whether it should've been a penalty). And CNU's coach was pissed because the EMS crews were sitting back and not coming out to help. The kid was taken to the hospital via ambulance and police escort.

Goose  -I will tell the big guy about it.

WC - Although I didn't like some of the flags...I think the refs did a good job. That punt was clearly deflected...at least from my point of view. Good to hear it's just a bruise....although I'm sure it hurts like a mother!!

As an 04  alum of the football team. I just want to say that I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE YOUNG CAPTAINS. Coming off a dissapointing loss to the Profs last week and after being left 4 dead by the media. You showed everyone in the football nation what CNU football is all about.

P.S. I guess you can give some real Kudos to Rowan. They are the only top team to consistently win at Pomoco or against the Captains period.

Keep up the good work. AND HOW ABOUT THE PAST FOOTBALL PLAYERS WHO CAME OUT TO SHOW LOVE TO GOOD OLD POMOCO AND CNU FOOTBALL. IT WAS A PLEASURE SEEING ALL OF YOU AND WE GOTA  DO IT AGAIN.

Agreed. There really didn't seem to be hardly any contentious calls this game. But as a side note, there were more delay of game penalties than I usually see. I don't know what that was all about.  ???

Overall, the abundance of big plays really made this game fun. CNU came out swinging with that fake punt (I didn't even have my camera ready on that one; did anyone see that coming?). It was a beautiful play.

Then there was UMHB's touchdown, where the running back just muscled his way through the CNU defense. I swear I thought that guy was going to get tackled four or five times before he actually hit the endzone. It was a good long run.

Throw in a few long conversions for 1st downs, and it was a memorable day in Newport News.

Around the rest of the conference:
-- It was nice to see Averett not get pummeled so badly this week, but it was still a hefty loss. Judging solely by the scores, it looks like the Cougars' defense needs to step it up a notch. It was, at least, a marked improvement over the game from last year. As for next week, hopefully Guilford won't continue its sweep of the conference.
-- Speaking of which, it looks like Methodist took a little beating today. Guilford just did it's thing through the air again (400+ yards!). On the flip side, the box score shows the Monarchs offense to be pretty lopsided in favor of the run game today. I suspect, with the arsenal of receivers they have, that they'll have to improve through the air this year if they expect to put up some wins.
-- Maryville lost....that's a big bummer. I was among those kind of hoping that the Scots would be a breakout sleeper team this year. Falling to a team like Centre kind of ruins that fantasy.
-- Wesleyan emerged with a nice huge win over SoVa. The Bishops are already showing signs of being significantly better than last year. Let's see if that trend continues.
-- As for Shenandoah, pretty much what we were all probably expecting.

The USAC was 2-4 for the day....is the silver lining the fact that that's twice as many wins as last weekend?  :-\

Major win, BIG TIME win for CNU, but if we are going to win the conference and advance beyond, two things must improve. 1. O line has got to get better; 2. D line has got to tackle like college athletes.  O line took 14 pts off the board themselves,  D line air grabing, they gave up two big gains which was the only bad spot for them all day (check the personnel at the time).

I want complain about the officating of the CNU games of the past two weeks.  The officials don't beat us, we steep on our own two feet.  Personally I think CNU has gain respect from USA SOUTH officials in the past years.  They are starting to realize that CNU has a right to compete with other teams in the conference.  This win over UMHB should pump us up into the top 15 this week.
