mc/chowan game story - check out the video linked in the story...pretty good highlight package - i didn't realize just HOW dominant the monarch defense was in the first half, but they certainly played well as a group...really shut down the running game - hill and bartee had really nice games for the monarchs offensively

box score

the bishops are on the clock...tick tock

QUESTION: When is the last time The Pride won two straight?

The Pride are on a Roll ! ! !

its been a long time.  I never complain about calls, but yesterday it was really bad.  31 penalties called. I hope no one thinks that GC was lucky on the win.  They had to fight hard, because the referee's made that game closer then it looked. Just look at the box score.  Maryville was dominated.

Good win for CNU.  Great game for FC, tough loss. AU great win too besides the lack of defense.

So here is the question.  Who will win the USAC now? Since conference play is about to start. (What a way to kick it off last night with an OT game)

I said Ferrum at the begining of the year.  Now I am leaning more towards CNU after them going 2-1 in against some tough teams.  (Salisbury in my book is hyped up a bit too much)

Time to seperate the men from the boys. CNU starts USAC play in 2 weeks (after bye) at Shenadoah. Averett and Ferrum might be for real. It's shapping up to be a really good season. Ya gotta love USAC football!!!

You are right, PrideGuy - I forgot to mention the 196 yards in penalties, not to mention the lost yardage from plays called back and a 20 TD run by Bacon called back on the first series of the game.  It sounds like Maryville brought their refs with them!!  ???  And this game should not have been this close - The Pride could have won it in regulation with different officials. IMHO

So here is the question.  Who will win the USAC now? Since conference play is about to start.

Just this morning, I had created a poll on the USAC pick-em board asking this very question, because as conference play gets under way, I think it's something people will really start thinking about.

As I have since August, I'm still favoring Averett to win the USA South. Though the Cougars showed many holes in their pass defense on Saturday, I don't think they're going to face another team that has that kind of firepower from a quarterback. Most of the USAC teams do better with a run offense, and Averett can certainly stop that. On the opposite side, Averett has a strong and balanced run-pass attack, which I'm not sure any conference team can adequately defend.

But here's the new aspect to my thinking and rooting for Averett to win the conference. Assuming CNU wins the rest of its games except the one against Averett, I think that pretty much guarantees Chrisopher Newport and the USA South a Pool C bid to the playoffs. People have said that we've weakened as a conference this year (the ATN column pointed that out last week and someone on another board referred to us the USUCK). Yes, I realize that we're only about a third into the season so far, but I'm trying to keep an eye on the big picture, and two playoff teams this year would be a pretty sweet deal for us -- and should give our conference profile a much needed boost.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Eh-You

the Averett defense that came out of the locker room in the 2nd half would be there for 4 quarters - I'm not sure this thing would even be close.
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

Good call on AU.  I think you are right about that situation.  If and only if those two teams CNU beat still end up with good records. AU does have a good balance and agree will be hard to stop.  GC may not have the QB but they have alot of talent on the WR group.  other teams haven't given up as much yards as AU has through the air.  As the weak conference, i don't know massey ratings have "USUCK" conference at #20..with 10 below them, including the ASWC. I ponder what those fans mean about weak conference.

WOW!! What a game!!        :o

Greensboro College 39/Maryville College 36 (OT)

I think that means GC is now tied for first place in the conference . . . right?

When Maryville scored and took a 33-26 lead with only 56 seconds left in the game, I thought it really showed The Pride's character to march back down the field and tie the game with 15 second left. Maybe they are finally learning how to win!!

Hopefully this begins a new era for Greensboro College football. Almost 500 yards total offense and a very tough defense - with another victory (So.Va.) or two (Guilford), they might be considered a conference contender. ?

Also, it really sounds like The Pride just about have their QB situation figured out (25-49-1 for 338 yards and 3 TDs/ 17 rushes for 68 yds) and RB Herbin (17 for 72 and 2 TDs) sounds like a beast!

What kind of comment is that.  I wouldn't be so sure that CNU will finish first.  I do know that GC will not finish in last.  I am not saying at all that GC will finish first, but give them credit for beating someone other then SU in the conference.  Greensboro has two out of conference games the next two weeks.  Root for them there because it will only help CNU get a higher seed en route to the Stagg Bowl.  If they are going to win the conference.

PrideFan1986

Just to awnser the question on how long it has been since the Pride have won 2 straight. Looking at the record books it was in 2003 when we went 2-0 at the beginning of the season with wins over Chowan and Apprentice School.

But I can def. see us going 2-1 going into Guilford but we have got to be careful and not have 196 yards in penaltys. That will kill you in the long run

Uncle Jessie

It took me a few days to do this because of computer problems, but a big CONGRATULATIONS to the Hornets for the teams win on Sat. As usual the defense was GREAT!!  Dionte beatty had 4 INT's and really should have had 5. Why they kept throwing over to him I have no idea. One would think after he got his 2nd INT Waynesburg would try another guy to go after. Freshman QB Twaun Rhodes had 2 TD passes. I really like this kid. He is showing signs of a leader and is getting things done the right way.

Anyone from SU that may read this Please, Please, install that new style turf that Waynesburg had. It looks great!

As always GO HORNETS!!!

It was all said in fun man, relax. I will say this for certain, you are right, GC WILL NOT FINISH IN FIRST THIS YEAR. Who do you think will finish last?? You think you are gonna finish ahead of Shenandoah?? I guess that meeting between those two juggernauts will decide that fate then huh?

he could be thinking that they'll finish ahead of m'ville, given they just beat the scots

anyone have news on what's happening in tn?  i thought the scots returned 22 starters...i didn't expect them to have 2 losses at this point in the season

The USUCK will be the USUCK as long as I am around. Mainly because I am an ODIC fan  ;D.  Think of it as a term of endearment.
Seriously, the USUCK and the ODIC are pretty even top to bottom.  Of course, I'd have to put  the SCAnC at the top of the South region right now.

let's play a little "fun with numbers", shall we?

chowan played div 1aa western carolina in week 1, and here are some comparison's:

score wcu 42- chowan 0, score mc 31 - chowan 7

the monarchs and catamounts were within a few yards of each other in total offense (381 to 375), and the monarch defense held chowan to about 100 yards less in the first half than wcu did in the first half (by the 2nd half the monarchs were substituting liberally, and chowan got about 1/3 of their total yardage on 2 broken plays) - the monarchs played 52 guys on saturday, wcu played 61 in week 1...does this all mean that the monarchs would be competetive with wcu???

through 2 games, mike hill has 250 yards, 4 td's (but also has 2 fumbles...gotta squeeze that rock) and sports a 6.1 ypc average...not bad, but not nearly what pitts is doing for ferrum...412 yards, 3 td's and a 9.4 ypc average...wow

while he hasn't put up passing numbers like roncketti did last year, bartee has played well for the monarchs, completing 18 of 26 passes for 203 yards - no td's and 3 int's doesn't look so good, but you've got to love a 69% completion rate (oh yeah, he's rushed for 123 yards in those 2 games, too)...solid start for a kid who never threw a collegiate pass before this season - rocket's numbers didn't look that good after 2 games (of course, he wasn't surrounded by as much talent as bartee is) - i think that as bartee becomes more comfortable in the role, and as the coaches feed him more of the offense, the monarchs will continue to improve offensively

the monarch run defense looks strong, holding opponents to under 48 yards per game....or is it that guilford and chowan don't run well? - to my eye, it looks like the monarchs are better against the run...the additional speed of shuford and gauntlett, who are both sure tacklers, seems to be paying dividends...we'll find out, but i suspect it's a little improvement and a little that chowan and guilford can't run the ball

did i mention that the bishops were on the clock?  tick, tock - take care of business, monarchs
