And here I thought you were in the know about D3 football. Had you read CNU's game notes a little closer (http://athletics.cnu.edu/Sports/Football/footballgamenotes100706.pdf), you would see that we are ranked 21st in D3football's and Don Hansen's and 24th in the AFCA poll.

PrideFan1986

I am just saying that the last time that I saw the poll it was only in the coaches poll. Well you are in there for now untill the Scotts knock you out of it one week from today.

CaptainChris

Man Gullet you are as bright as I thought.  CNU is ranked in the top 25 in all the polls you can find except for the GC fanbase poll...and we have seen how bright those folks are.  At least BBall has given CNU a little credit.  Next I am going to hear how improved Maryville is from last year when CNU won in a 'close' game.  GC was supposed to be improved from last year and they got beat worst this year.  I don't think CNU will slip up.  Coach K is too good a coach that teaches discipline.  He will have the Captains ready to play and make sure they take this thing one game at a time the rest of the way out.

ROLL CAPTAINS!!!

CaptainChris

I take back the ROLL CAPTAINS if it means they will play like GC next week.  I prefer cheering for teams that play the game the right way; with class whether they win or lose.

You know, it's been hard for BC to find teams to play us as well.  Last year we  had to play a club team because we couldn't find a 10th team to play.  It's not just Mount Union who can't find people to play.

Uh,  is that why BC played Shenandoah instead of CNU this year.  Last I heard was that BC coach did not want to play CNU anymore.  I could be wrong and you all knowing smiters will probably bash me with the facts.

WE get to play home and away with Shenandoah who are up the road from us.    We got to play a "home" game with CNU at the Oyster Bowl about 5 miles from CNU campus so we played there like 3 times in a row.  I was accosted by a drunk student at one of those games on campus.  It was very unpleasant, I can assure you.  Scary too for someone as old and decrepit (sp) as I am.  But lots of my guys were there and caught the guy and the police carted him away.  The team I like from CNU is the baseball team.  They have a GREAT COACH!!!  Looking forward to bringing brownies to Coach John and his team come spring!   I'll be there for the CNU tournament at the begining of baseball season as I am also the Baseball Mom here at BC.  But the atmosphere is very different at the baseball field. Just my 2 brownies worth.  Oh and I don't smite people unless they are mean and vicious.  You don't seem to be either.

GEEZ - I stay off for a couple of hours and I miss three or four pages!! Good to see all the good cheer passing back and forth . . . . :-\

First, let me reaffirm that I am still a GC fan. Being rather new to D3, and knowing some of the talent on the GC squad that they haven't had before, I thought they could beat CNU. Obviously I was wrong there.  :o

Second, CNU played on the same field, good or bad, that GC did and the first half stats show a very close game, separated in score by a blocked punt for a TD. The CNU defense is to be commended for causing 7 turnovers and the blocked punt - that is what I believe made the difference in this game. I also thought the GC defense played very well, but probably got tired bailing out the offense's mistakes that caused bad field position. (Not to mention the difference in punting yardage!) GC NEVER got into the RED ZONE and CNU only got there three times!  >:(

Third, CNU deserves the Top 25 rankings - at least until they get beat. They beat a 2-3 team by 28 points and held them scoreless - a team that is trying to learn what it is like to win. That is what was expected - so why is that an argument?  :P

Fourth, I have watched all of the GC games this year except for the CNU game and I believe GC has played with class. There does appear to be some exceptions, but those one or two players don't represent the whole team (or shouldn't). I agree with those that are going to say the coach should deal with those players, but I'm not the coach, those actions are classless, but should not label the entire team as "undisciplined thugs."   :-[

Now, GC is 2-3 and 1-1 in conference play. It appears the one conference team they beat is not a bad team. That gives me hope. I'm hoping The Pride can post a winning season this year. I believe they have the talent, but hope they can believe in themselves enough to be winners. Those classless acts probably come from the frustration of losing so much in the past.  :-\

Next, since I believe this team is more talented than in the past, I don't place much value in past records, etc. I'm hoping the coaches can help the players to a winning attitude.  ;D

BTW, GC has played at least two good teams, but got blown out by both. Also, when I mentioned not using the weather as an excuse, I think I was talking about both teams. I'm sure the weather affected both teams and it is not an excuse for one team or another-IMO. I do think that throwing the ball 20 times in that rain was asking for trouble, while CNU wisely threw it only 9 times - and you can't really tell if a secondary is good on 9 passes! And both teams averaged under two yards per rush. The biggest difference was not the offenses, but the 3-1 fumbles lost and the 4-2 interceptions and the punt block. It very easily could have been 0-0 going into half.  ???

Here are the stats:
                                                  GC     CNU
FIRST DOWNS...................            8       11
RUSHES-YARDS (NET)............   34-68    50-93
PASSING YDS (NET).............        39          51
Passes Att-Comp-Int...........      19-6-4    9-5-2
TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS.. 53-107   59-144
Punts (Number-Avg)............       6-21.7   6-39.2
Fumbles-Lost..................           4-3        2-1
Penalties-Yards...............            5-25      1-5
Possession Time...............          27:10    32:50
Red-Zone Scores-Chances.......     0-0      3-3
Sacks By: Number-Yards........      3-15      1-7

BTW, I was sick about that pass completion on 4th and long to the 10 yardline, but I think GC felt the game was over, especially after that play. At least that is one excuse, not that it matters. It sounded like a good read and good completion.  ::)

OK - that is all over for now - that game is now only a film and a W/L - CNU is GREAT! and GC is not  :(  Shall we move on?  :-*  :-*

NEXT WEEK: ;D
What chance does GC have against Shenandoah? Will The Pride get their starting RB back? (he missed the CNU trip) Any chance of running an option with the two mobile QBs we have? Might open up the passing more . . . .  ;)

Do you really think Maryville will beat CNU? I don't and I said Maryville was better than people thought back when GC beat them. They have a good QB and a very good receiver, but I think the CNU defense is just too strong for them.  :)

Llama,

Actually CNU not making the playoffs ONCE was due to conference losses, not the tough non conference schedule. And Rugbyguy is faster than you!  :o

Kid - man, we used to get along, then you become part of the d3football.com staff and well........you can fill in the blanks!  :D

I know the GC folks have left already.....hopefully when you read this you're in a warm, dry hotel room. That trip is gonna suck. I hate driving home in it from Norfolk.

I'm sorry I have been away from my computer over in Page Co. where they haven't heard of computers yet. ( So I just have to comment when I have a chance because it'll be back to the wilds of rural life tomorrow mirning.)  But Rugybyguy is faster than you are too.  ;D  He was one of the majors in my department and (lol) he can speak Spanish too!

D3newbie if I knew how to do the whole karma thing I would add to yours b/c you know what you are talking about.  I guess gullet is the only GC fan that has his mind set on one thing and one thing only and common sense can't change it.  I agreed with everything you said so I will tell you that I don't think Shenandoah has enough defensive team speed to handle GC, you should be in good shape.  The CNU game is like the super bowl for them so they always play them hard, but GC will beat them handily.

Olinemom

It's late, but one more message since I'll be away from computers for the next couple of days. :'( :'( I don't remember who wrote about the Oyster Bowl as it was about 5-6 pages ago and it's too late to look it up, but what I remember from that game is #20, Jamie Langley lying still and the CNU team exulting (or so it seemed to me) , jumping and hitting chests together, and Jamie lying there so still, not moving and the CNU team jumping around.  It seemed to last forever.  I'm sure it didn't but it seemed forever until the team was cleared away.  I hate it when anyone gets hurt. So the 2 indelible memories I have of trips to Newport News is one of my Jamie getting injured and me getting attacked at Pomoco Stadium (which, by the way, is the nicest facility I have yet seen at any DIII game --if you don't count the visitor side bleachers.  If you have to count both sides, then Mount Union has the nicest facilities.  But I'm really impressed with the home side facilities at CNU.)  Now my brothers played when if you were a good player, you played both ways, every play.  The sick feeling always comes when a player is injured, no matter on whose team he is.
I responded to a post about Mt Union having trouble scheduling 10 games.  I never dreamed that it would bring such heated responses and pages of jibes back and forth.  I apologize for having caused such discension.  That was not my intent.    We had trouble scheduling a tenth game last year.  Va Southern backed out.  Thomas More backed out.  It was not wonderful to have to play that George Mason club team.  My #2 team never gets to play a 10 team schedule either and to get more than the 7 in their conference they have to fly half way across the country to play 2 teams.  One worries when one only has 9 games, especially when the playoffs come and everybody else has 10 games.  Last week there was a cancellation that may mess up the conference down in Texas.  2 teams will only have 9 games.  However,  my Texas team won big today (UMHB).  In the past playoffs, BC has gone to Texas and played Trinity.  We lost down there.  They came to B'water and beat us the last time they went to the Stagg Bowl, but lost their great QB to some off-campus high-jinx and got stomped in Salem with their #2 QB.  I know the guys don't care where they play as long as they play.  But as for myself, I would have a big problem swinging a trip to Texas.  After all I teach, so I'm poor.-- although last year Roocru  had offered accomodations if we were to get there.  That didn't happen. :(
As for being on the boards, I read every board in the South Region.  Every conference in the South is important and it is good to know who the good teams are.  In addition, I used to teach at High Point U, so I know a lot about the USAC schools to begin with and it's neat to know what is happening.  I don't usually bother with the East, but I read the North board for the OAC board.  I've met a ton of MUC people at the Stagg Bowls I have attended.  Stone Station has been known to host the fans of both teams playing in the national championship for a tailgate before the big game and it's a fabulous time.  I check the West Board--especially the Wisconsin for my Wisconsin-Whitewater team and the NWC for my Linfield team.  One of the key things I like about  the d3football.com board is getting to meet other posters and interacting with them.  It's been one of the most enjoyable pursuits that I've done in the past couple of years.  One sets up tailgates at games and meets posters from the other teams.  Last year at Thiel comes to mind as a great occasion!!   It's great.  Last year at the Stagg, we had the W-WW and MUC fans all together at the same tailgate with us Stone Station crew and it was a fine time,
everybody bantering and  saying how great their team was.  Nothing mean-spirited at all, either before or after the game, to be truthfull about it.  There was such a lot of class shown.
I just  don't see the point in screaming in posts and making ugly comments.  I suppose because I have watched and cheered for my players (and I always have players to cheer for--even when we were 0-10, I was there in the stands) for about 50 years and long ago came to the realization that it's the boys on the field who play.  The coaches coach.  Nothing much else matters. What is going to happen happens.  The team is going to win or it's not.   My guys are happy that I come and support them, I do know that, because they tell me so.   OF course, it's always better to be lucky than good.  Frankly we didn't deserve to beat Ferrum the other week, but I am glad we did.  And today I hear that Jermaine Pitts got injured.   That's awful!  He is an excellent player, so much better than many of those who play around him.  He gave us more than we could handle so often in that game.  They are so much better a team than their record shows.
I've blithered on way too long, but I was away for 2 days and will be away for 3 more starting tomorrow.  It's called FALL BREAK!! Thanks God for small blessings.  Good luck to those in the USAC on their games this coming Saturday.  I will be going down to Guilford for our match with the Quakers.  I promised hasanova and trenches that I would bring brownies for a tailgate and so there will be a Stone Station fun time in Greensboro this coming Saturday.  I am looking forward to it!  To bed!

CNU85

O Line Mom - I was at that Oyster Bowl  and the CNU players were bumping chests etc.....it was a good hit.....tell the rest of the story...once CNU realized the guy was hurt, the coach made everyone go to one knee and remove their helemts on the sidelines.....out of respect....that's how CNU has handled every injured player at games that I've seen........when the kid was taken off the field, then the team stood up and put on their helmets and the crowd applauded his effort.

As far as your experience on campus...that was unfortunate, but not indicitive of the folks around here....just a bad apple in society.....it doesn't happen when you come down for baseball does it? The baseball diamond is only a few hundred yards from POMOCO.....don't let one guy out of thousands ruin it for you.....come back often...we're really decent folk!

A little 411 for you. The #21 rank was only in the Coaches Poll not the national poll.

CNU85 - good points. I was a little disappointed with those comments as well. Our kids play with as much sportsmanship as any team I have seen and they were absolutely concerned when they saw the down player. I don't care what team you play for, big hits will always garner a celebration. But not a single player was celebrating the injury. I am also sure that students at Bridgewater drink as well.

mc/au game story from the fayetteville observer

'85 (i think it was you) - don't worry...the monarchs will not let a couple of close losses get them down...they know they can play with anyone in this conference - they've got a tough stretch with ferrum coming to mc next weekend, but i expect this team to play hard and play with passion until the last game of the season - a win over ferrum next weekend would not surprise me (especially if pitts doesn't play) and i think the monarchs realize they can play with cnu after dominating them in the first half last year, so i wouldn't put it past the monarchs to play cnu well at pomoco (although that is a tall task) - even if they lose both the fc and cnu games, i expect the monarchs to beat gc and m'ville at home and su on the road - 4-3/3-4 in the conference is not what i expected out of this team pre-season, but at this stage it's all i can realistically expect

PrideSportBBallGuy

I hope everyone will excuse my friend Gullet.  He is a friend and an idiot.

I along with many GC fans thought that CNU wasn't a 21 ranked team.  Yeah we got smashed.  I felt a team with a 21 ranking rain or shine should be able to put up better numbers.  Yeah they put up 28 pts on 144 yards and 14 came at the 00 yard line, because of the playing surface.  The blocked FG, and the interception of a wet ball taking back to the 00 yard line.  I was offered a chance to go to color in the press box.  I thought it was a better idea to watch the game in the middle of a Noreaster.  I think I might take up that offer at the next game.  If I am offered again.  I hope Maryville beats CNU.  (I guess to despite CNU and it will help the GC faithful think they could have beaten CNU.  Plus when GC beats SU it will tie us in the conference.)

Whichever CNU fan talked about tailgating.  I would have glady showed up.  I tailgate usually at the Jamieson but I am usually the only one there.

AU has the worst fans.  I forgot to mention.  They show some of the worst class.  I work for one of the basketball teams at GC. (No I am not a coach)  They heckled me.  Of course I show some class and keep my mouth shut.
