personally, i have to disagree - i thought the au fans at the mc/au game yesterday were very supportive of their team, and they brought a nice crowd that was pretty vocal - the mc crowd was decent, but they sat on their hands most of the game - i wish the monarchs could have a more significant home-field advantage - we're one of the largest schools in the usasac, but too few of the students go to and get loud at games...makes no sense to me

Narch - their basketball fans used to be obnoxious and annoying. They would sit behind the visitors bench even tho that was against USA South policy and make a huge and annoying racket. I do however commend their spirit in cheering for their team. They have calmed a bit now but still make a heckuva lot of noise which is great considering how far that program has come since Jimmy Allen took over. As for their football fans, couldnt tell ya. They sit on on the other side of the field!

They still are, and they still sit behind the bench of the visitors.  I have made that trip the past two years, and they are still there.

(GC has the calmest fans, thats because they don't have anyone show-up)

Basketball we have had better attendance.  Student Activities director at GC, told me that the Girls Basketball, out drew Men's basketball.  We all know why.

Oh its got to be based on playing ability, right Prideguy!!!!  ;)

Narch, Three things could help the MC home field advantage: 1) All the MC athletic teams have home games the same time as the home football games.  Students seperate, and the other athletes can't support each other. 2) I don't see this happening any time soon, but I think they should build huge, new home stands opposite the one we have now.  Nice press Box, and the whole nine yards. There is plenty of room.  It would help with recruits, and more fans would come. If you build it, they will come! 3) Advertise the games.  Only die hard fans even know when the Monarchs play at home.  You either have to go to school at MC, or you have to get on the website to find out when MC plays.  They need to let people in the community know that their team is playing.

I loved playing at home.  I always felt we had a great atmosphere, and we usually had a good turnout.  I just feel those are three things that could help increase the home field advantage.

P.S. I was up for most of the game as was my wife. She gets more into the game than I do.

When CNU has a football home game, there is absolutely NOTHING going on between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm. It can be done.

Goose....

First you didn't invite me into the booth to stay dry...I was getting drenched.

I made this joke after the women won the title the first year. I think you make the guys team a bunch of girls and translate them to the size of that level (i.e a 7 footer guy to a 6'3 girl) The girls would beat them.  ;)

rocket - i agree wholeheartedly on all 3 points, and i actually was thinking something similar as i went to the soccer games at 1/2 time of the football game and after the football game...there were probably 100+ fans @ each of those games...who knows if they would have gone to a fb game, though - the crowd did get into the game at a couple of appropriate times on saturday, but most other times they were just dead - the guys with the pom-poms at the front have been great at every game (painting their faces and chests at previous games), but they need help (and what was with the light blue golf shirts...maybe i should buy them some green golf shirts :)) - when i get a little loud at games i can always feel people looking at me like i'm crazy...it doesn't stop me but i want to ask them "why are you here if you're not going to cheer and support the team?" - official attendance this weekend was announced at just over 600, but there is NO WAY that's correct...the stands were full (there are 800+ seatbacks) and there were people on the grass...i'd bet there were at least 800-900 - there were probably 1000+ for the chowan game, and i wouldn't be surprised to see attendance top 1300 for homecoming, with all the 50th anniversary celebrations being coupled with normal hc activities and the game being vs. gc, who will probably bring a solid contingent - our facilities are too small for the number of people coming to games...now we just need the crowd to get a little more into the games

as for facilities, here is what i would like to see:
1. - expand the current press box with an addition on each end...put a permanent concession stand in one addition and restrooms in the other
2. - extend the seat backs on the north end of the stadium (left side, if you're looking at the field)...there are about 200 seatback chairs in storage somewhere on campus, from what i've heard
3. - if you really want to get crazy and expand seating to 1000+, add bleacher seating on the south end of the home side, but i don't think this is necessary yet
4. - build a fieldhouse/locker room/weight room on the visitor's side...put temporary bleacher seating for  300 or so on that side of the field and give those fans a seperate entrance and moveable concessions
5. - put a black wrought iron fence around the entire field with a brick column every 40 yards, or so, and make a nice brick & wrought iron gate at the entrance
6. - create a football booster club and designate the little parking lot beside the berns center as a tailgating lot - rope it off and let those willing to help bankroll items 1 through 5 have a place to hang out and have a little fun before games

1 & 2 seem like relatively simple things that could be done for little capital outlay since the maintenance staff could do the majority of the work - #3 isn't necessary yet, but would be a great way to look to the future of the program and institution...as mc continues to grow, the facilities will be neededd - #4 and #5 probably will not happen, but would make the facility a top-notch d3 facility - #6 is a pipe-dream :)

unfortunately, i don't know that any of these things will happen - i know the football program got some $$ this past year from the administration to make some much needed improvements to the locker/weight facility...it looks better, but it's still sub-par...and getting more $$ any time soon is probably not going to happen - there might be some faculty members who would have something to say about the football team getting that kind of cash before some upgrades are made in, say trustees or one of the other older classroom buildings (and rightly so)

until then, i still thouroughly enjoy each and every monarch game i attend, even when the monarchs lose in frustrating fashion as they did this weekend

I also think MC needs a stadium upgrade.  I know the new facilities at Guilford have helped recruiting and made the game atmosphere more enjoyable.

wow...those facilities must be REALLY nice, because guilford's old facilities were laughable compared to monarch stadium - the splinters from those decaying wooden bleachers were tough :)...i'll have to make a trip up to the 'boro to check them out

I was impressed with the Guilford stadium when Greensboro played there. The visitors side was just the normal aluminum bleachers, but who cares about the visitors side. The home side looked very nice with a lot of brick and wrought iron. The press box looked pretty impressive and I used the home side facilities and they were nice. The visitors side had green outhouse port-a-johns. And they still had the grassy knoll to sit on for those who don't want to sit in the bleachers.  It may not be the nicest stadium in D3 like the announcer bragged, but they were still nice, nonetheless.  8)

I think "laughable" is exactly the right word - they were absolutely awful from my point of view.  This afternoon, I posted some photos from Homecoming on the ODAC site.   Go take a look.  I'll post a little more below in response to D3Newbie's post.

D3Newbie - Thanks for the compliments on the Phase I improvements to Armfield Athletic Stadium.  I'm sorry the visitor side isn't up to par yet, but that's part of Phase II in the summer of 2007.  As I understand it, other upgrades in Phase II besides the visitor side stands will be lights for night games, field turf, a bigger/improved ticketing area and more landscaping.  The announcer you talked about was Guilford President Kent Chabotar, so you'll have to overlook his enthusiastic speech to the alumni at halftime.  It's nice, but not "best in d3."  :)

Eh-You

I hate Averett's football facilities. (Hop eye spelle everything write - wouldn't wont hasanova to be so board wit da ODAC bored that he korrects my gramR) Not including the fieldhouse - haven't seen the inside.
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

W&L doesn't play any games against USAC teams so I don't think you have to worry about the gramer police over here as much as on the ODAC board. ;)

"Fun E ewe wood cey that a bout aver it's futbol fasealitees awn this bored.  Win eye wuz their own Septimber 16, aye thot it wuz won of thee weird S feelds anne seton aria's ide scene."  It reminded me of a large kid's erector set dumped out of the box on the home side.   :-\  Please don't worry about me correcting all the grammar on d3 football boards.  I simply don't have that much time and energy.  :)  Besides, I was a math and economics major, so what do I know?  Peace
