mc/cnu game story - coach sy says it best re: missed opportunities...kind of the story of the monarch season - i also like what he says about the character of this team...if these guys win 3 straight to finish the season, it will say a lot about them as a team

man, that cnu defense was good yesterday

Newbie...I'm not sure if GC had good karma at the first of the season or good scheduling.  Lets face it, GC didn't play anybody the first part of the season other than Mars Hill.  I understand a need to build confidence through scheduling but it has got to be expected that once GC hit their conference portion of the schedule, they were going to take their lumps.

LUMPS?!? GC is taking more than lumps . . . . they're getting disfigured !! :o IMO

Agreed, for the most part, but Shenandoah?   ???  There was a different attitude, even with the big loss to Mars Hill! It's not so much that we didn't win those last four games, but how we lost them. Especially the last two.  :-[

I think watching them shoot themselves in the foot so much is what is so discouraging.  Not to disparage the efforts of GC's opponents, but to see GC not take better advantage of talent.  :(

Anytime a losing program tries to change, they have to overcome the stigma of losing. I watched a program go from 3-30 to two straight 13-1 seasons. The biggest change was mental.  Their new coach recognized that and emphasized attitude (and weight room, workouts, etc.). I'm sure Mitchell is probably trying to do the same. 8)

I see a different team now than at the beginning of the season - and I mean from watching them play.  Injuries have hurt them, but that is part of the game. They've lost their starting RB and several key defensive starters. But it's not like they don't have talent and can't be competitive.  :-\

OK, what does Ferrum have? Maybe they are not as strong as they were last year - right? ;)

Tough loss for the Monarchs.  Seems like they could have been there all day long but just kept finding a way to not score.  Congrats to the Captains on another win.
Hopefully the boys will dig deep and finish the season with 3 W's!

Ok BBall guy, enough silence - I'm letting you out of the bet! I've got to hear your take on a few things.
1. Greensboro's pass defense is blah blah blah. 250 + 4 TDS.
2. Averett's pass defense is blah, blah, blah. 95 YDS
3. Cool stat of the game: Gboro offense = 266 yds and 21 points
AU defense = 170 yds and 21 points
Would have been a pretty good game if the Averett offense wouldn't have played :D

Gotta hear your reaction BBall - and I admire your silence

You said it so I am back...Too bad I just emailed my picks to Legacy too.

First thing.  I blame the city of greensboro.  Haha it took me a half of hour to get to 29.  A&T had the homecoming game, and the road I was on had road construction narrowed it down to one lane at parts.  Road construction needed in the middle of football season c'mon.  Almost didn't make it on time.  I need to be at games early.

My reaction on the game.  What can I say, I had to leave.  Even if it was a good game I couldn't have stayed beacuse of work (Left when it was 49-14).  CNU fans listen up.  I no longer hate you guys.  I think they showed a bit more sportsmanship in the 28-0 wallop, by taking the starters out earlier then AU. (Again I left early, but that was what I was told.)

Pleas roll over AU, CNU.  (Even though I think AU will beat CNU)  AU has speed and size.  CNU just has speed. (Compared to AU)

Eh-you explain the punt return penatly.  GC hit AU guy and got a penalty recovered the fumble.  AU's next punt AU guy did the exact same thing no fumble no penalty.  I think both of them should have had a penalty.

GC did win one thing though.  They finally won the battle of penalties, and I think personal fouls called too.

TO's killed GC again in this game.

AU won it fair and square.

I am trying to figure out something.  I am not around the area.  How many High schools are there in NC?  How many football teams make it to the playoffs in NC?

I am talking 1A-3A.  How do they really classify it? Is there 1AA thru 3AA too.

Just did a quick look at www.nchsaa.org and it looks like there are about 90 schools per classification with 64 teams making the playoffs per class. Those 64 are then split into two groups of 32 with the 32 larger schools in the A bracket and the 32 smaller in the AA bracket.

not sure how many schools there are in nc, but the classification is split like this

4a - largest schools
4aa
3a
3aa
2a
2aa
1a
1aa

From my experience as a NC coach they have little 4A and Big 4 A. The same for the other levels such as 1A, 2A, 3A. The crux of the problem is schools sizes relative to locations in proximity to each other. Lets take Havelock High and West Carteret in Coastal conf. they are a big 3A with about 1300 kids each. New Bern and Greenville Rose are 4A with close to 2K kids. But they are in the same conference.

So both can compete for the playoff at different levels within the conf. Teams with 3-7 records goes to the 3A playoffs even though the 4A's within their own conference pounds them. As long as they beat the 3A schools in the conf.

It has to do with travel times, (nobody wants to drive to Charlotte) and the politics of Raleigh. Football is one thing with an all day trek but imagine a basketball, soccer, tennis team with 2 or 3 games a week going all the way to Charlotte, Greensboro or Elizabeth City from the 12 miles from the coast. The logistics would be horrible. NC's population and demographics are just a mess. When I played at Havelock in the 70's every school was within an hour and they were the same size. It's just demographics

Quote from: WCLegacy on October 21, 2006, 10:52:31 PMAlso, I'm kinda interested/stunned/intrigued that CNU had scored only 7 points this weekend by halftime...at home. I didn't hear all the details, but I kind of feel like there might actually be a chink in that armor. It just makes the Nov. 4 showdown all that much more exciting.

legacy - what makes this a "chink" in the cnu armor?  averett only scored 14 first half points against mc, and honestly hardly moved the ball other than the first and last drive of the half (and needed a PERFECT pass from todd parsons into triple coverage on third and 13 to the best wr in the conference to make the last score happen) - not bashing au, because they are a very solid team, but honestly i don't think that their first half performance against mc was any more impressive (other than the fact that they had one more score and were playing on the road...not sure, but i'd be willing to bet they had much less yardage at 1/2 time than cnu did) - if anything, the defensive performance by cnu this weekend and the offensive balance they exhibited (throwing for 250+ and running for 100+...the first team to do that to the monarch defense this year) lead me to believe that they are legit and may be the best team in the conference

PrideSportBBallGuy

The reason I ask is I am trying to compare ratio wise schools per classifaction.  My high school a few year ago had 9-1 and 8-2 teams back in MD and didn't make the playoffs.  They have some cockeyed BCS scoring system.  It was good system, but  they were hurt by it by the teams they played.  For instance my county was small at parts, my high school was a 3A school most of the teams were 2A and 1A schools.  They played each other to determine a county championship.  They were penalized because of it.  It was better to play a below .500 4A school then the top 1A or 2A school.  Across the state this isn't a problem like Baltimore County for intsnace.  At that time only 8 teams per classifaction made the playoffs.  Now it is 16 teams.  Yet my county and close northern county combined to form the Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference.  The problem with the northern schools is they are all 1A schools, with maybe 1 2A school.  They are still using this BCS system.  I just don't think even with a good record my high school team can get into the playoffs.

By the way just about all those 1A schools are posied to enter into the playoffs this year because of them having to play the 3A and 2A schools in my county.  Even though they have losing records.

SOunds like NC is a little more fair.

Win in your classification and you go.

Beating bigger schools will get you a better seed in the playoffs all thing being equal.

PrideSportBBallGuy

Football seems to be different in MD.

Every other sport anybody that wants to play can go in and play.  They do the seeding for those sports the top 4 teams get the top 4 seeds based on how that team plays within the region (i.e 3A North, or East etc.)  the rest are a random draw.  So the number 1 seed could easily play the number top seeds in the region where the number 2 seed could play some of the worst.  I think it is a little lazy in MD.

There has been a basketball team with a losing record to win a state championship. So everyone has a shot.

Would that mean there could be a 3A state champ and a 3AA state champ?

By the way here is what the current MD BCS looks like for the 3A.  Top 4 teams from the various 3A regions get in for a total of 16.

Yes that's correct. Charlotte INDEPENDENCE (the Leak boys) have over 3K kids BIG 4A (I believe) and Havelock when it was 4A for 3 years had 1350 kids. A little difference there huh?
