Hughley or Hilliard....OPOTY...toss a coin

DE...Nathan Williams gets a vote from me....although only a SO....he was constantly disrupting the Offense. A biased pick, admittedly.

narch, that's a fine list of offensive players you put together. I think it's spot on.

Since I'm pressed for time, I'm just going to give my thoughts on the big ones:

I have a poll on the pick-ems board right now for Coach of the Year. My vote went to Tony Ierulli from Maryville. I know this award is often given to the coach of the conference champ, but I think Ierulli is the best candidate because he crafted a very good season from a team that looked like it had very little to work with. Plus, he's put the Maryville squad on the map and made them contenders in the conference this year. I expect that to continue next year, as well.

Offensive Player of the Year should go to Hughley. On paper, I knew he was a good player, but it wasn't until I saw him play in person that I knew he was a rare football player. He certainly contributed to Averett's strong season.

Defense Player of the Year belongs to Rodriguez from CNU. But I will say that part of me wants him to have it because of the huge impact he's had overall on his career at CNU. He's a stud athlete, and the couple times I've seen him play, he's made a difference in the Captains' pass defense.

I also want to add another category to the mix of this discussion, since this was one that was used in the pre-season Kickoff: Breakout Player of the Year. I had pegged Maryville wide receiver Cedric McDonald as the conference breakout. I can't say for sure if he was the creme of the crop of those who burst onto the scene, but I was happy that the sophomore is ninth in the conference in receiving yards per game. He averaged 21 yards per catch and co-led the team in receiving touchdowns. This kid has a nice future with the Scots.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

i wanted a monarch to get a 1st team vote, so i created a fictional position allowing doleman to be voted as a 1st team wr and lowe as a 1st team util :)

seriously, though, here is my thinking - lowe's receiving numbers were not impressive enough to warrant a spot on the first team, nor were his rushing numbers....but he's clearly one of the top 4 or 5 offensive players in the league - he lines up everywhere for the pride and creates havoc for defenses, but is he a wr who runs, or a rb who splits out or a qb that does both? - well, he's all of those things, hence the util designation

i disagree...weren't the m'ville fans touting 22 returning starters from a competetive team in the off-season?  that's a lot of returning talent - coty is ginn from ncwc in my book...he's taken that program from start-up to legit contender in 4 years - amazing

while he's not a breakout player, per se, since he was in high school last year, clearly bush from ncwc was the biggest surprise to me - he averaged over 9 ypc in conference games...9 ypc...that's almost a first down every time he touched the ball...sure helps an offense stay on schedule when they're facing a lot of 2nd and 1's

based on that def...you gotta vote George Jones...WR, took many snaps in the shotgun at QB.....3 very long runs 30+ yds for TD's from the QB spot.....in motion with quick handoffs......he might even have 1 or 2 TD passes...gotta go look at the stats......gotta be the util of the year! Hands Down.

you know, i didn't think to look at jones' numbers...i'll have to do that - honestly, and this isn't fair, i've felt like jones was a disappointment the last few years because he was SO GOOD as a frosh...he clearly was not the player i thought he was seeing him play in person as a soph and jr (although he's damn good, don't get me wrong) - i did see he had a monster game this past weekend...i'll reconsider him and compare his numbers to those of lowe...unfortunately, the usasac hasn't loaded week 10 stats into the system yet

ok...just looked at overall numbers, and these 2 are close

jones - 318 rush yds (10.3 ypc), 5 td & 476 rec yds, 3 td
lowe - 304 rush yds (4.5 ypc), 1 td & 546 rec yds, 2 td

i want to see how the 2 compare in conference games before i make a final decision

i'm still leaning toward lowe for one big reason...he led gc in both rushing and receiving...he HAD to be a do everything guy for gc...jones filled a more complimentary role - jones is CLEARLY more explosive, though, and the td discrepancy is pretty big

Don't have much time to look dddddddeeeeeeeeeppppppppp into the stats like you guys.  ;D  DPOY Justin Long or Rob Rod hands down I don't think any other player on any other team has made more plays.

As far as OPOY I did hear Hughley was a man child so from the talk I guess you can go with him. Hillard better be a close second.

Break out player of the year. Don't forget about Todd Fasion.  I saw the kid his frosh year and he really had trouble getting the snap from center none the less beating top 5 competition in week 2.  He also had a very very young offensive line while playing a very top heavy schedule and a very competitive league schedule.

As far as George Jones goes the Kid is still a beast.  Unknown to most the kid battled a lot of injuries throughout his CNU career. So you should NEVER USE THE WORDS DISSAPOINTING AND HIS NAME IN THE SAME SENTENCE. Because he still buried Averett in the title game with a TD burst in the second half that was ultimately the game winner. The kid made a lot of big plays against UMHB in that win.  And check the stats he probably has the most (30-40 plus yard plays on his team). Not to mention he is a big time deep threat, one of the most versatile players in the conference, and most importantly he is a very good student.

Already told the boss Saturday I was going to be sick so I was not coming to work. ;D ;D  I missed the last 2 games 85 but I ain't missing this one.

Who knows I might strap it up against the Presidents.  I still owe them for ending my seasons twice.   :: :o :o :o :o

You actually heard hype from Maryville fans? And I missed it?! Sigh... :'(  ;)

Actually, you bring up a good point here. I look at the expected caliber of that returning team. As a whole (and I might be misreading this), I don't think a lot of people had them pegged as a breakout team. And quite frankly, I'm not 100 percent sure they were a big breakout success. Yeah, they had 22 starters coming back, but those starters went 3-7 last year. I thought I was maybe giving them a little too much credit when I picked them to go 5-5 overall and 3-4 in-conference this year. Turns out, they pretty much fit that bill. I like the direction Maryville is going as a team...a team that doesn't rely on lots of standout players (one...maybe two). I think that Ierulli has taken a lot of average or slightly above average players and made them into a solid club.

All that said, Ginn is defintely my No. 2 choice for COTY. Can't really go wrong with that pick.

Worth creating another topic of discussion: Rookie of the Year? As you said, Bush really isn't a breakout, but he's definitely up there in the talk of the conference's best rookie.

cnusfinest: Faison is good to work into any talk about Breakout of the Year players. He's a candidate.
