I had checked the USA South's Web site, but couldn't find those listing you had. Maybe I need new glasses. I did just find these -- which show Gboro at the very bottom -- in the official record book:

Conference Standings
Team Conf. Pct. All Pct.
Shenandoah 5-1 .833 7-4 .636
Chris. Newport 5-1 .833 9-3 .750
Methodist 4-2 .667 7-3 .700
N.C. Wesleyan 3-3 .500 4-4 .500
Averett 2-4 .333 6-4 .600
Ferrum 1-5 .167 4-6 .400
Greensboro 1-5 .167 2-8 .500

I fully admit that I have no idea how basketball makes its decisions, but in the AU-GC example you mentioned, the teams split when facing each other. The head-to-head was 1-1, so they couldn't use that as a measuring stick. If their records had been the same and GC had gone 2-0 against AU, I suspect GC would've gone to the playoffs. But since the record was split, they had to go to the next measuring item.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Actually, I think the official tiebreaker that the NCAA uses in all instances is the head-to-head -- and I couldn't find where the standings you have came from.

The NCAA doesn't break any tie, and especially not for last place. The conference breaks ties however it wants.

Where is Narch?  He can fill everyone in on how it works.

Here is the link I found that shows FC behind GC

Click on 2004.  Then Standings and Schedules.  It will be right there.

BBallguy - you're gonna tick off Coleman if you keep going to the USA South website to find the standings.....try looking on that obscure website d3football.com

I think somewhere in there they might have the standings for all the years in the history of the conference. Not sure, though.  :P

Oh yes. Will do. :-[ I went to the USASouth site only because hopefully they had it based on the tiebreaker. (If there was/is one.)  I don't want to come across one that just lists them in alphabetical order.  If Pat Coleman and staff know every tiebreaker of every conference for every sport, then Pat must truly be the d3 sport "tutelary"  ;D

We may know them, but programming them is not on my radar.

I wouldn't assume that all conference sites have all ties broken according to their own tiebreaking procedures.

Point taken, but I was looking at it in regards to if the NCAA would rank all the teams in a region, that's what I thought was a top factor. Sure, we're debating last place (well off the NCAA's radar).... I would say this is a topic that could/should just fade away, but I'm happy to see some life on the board!

And I was unsure of the "conference standings" that BBallGuy posted because it only listed overall records. It was a conference ranking without conference results? Hmmmm, I'm wondering if that was something that was just slapped on the USAC site without much thought.

That said, even the rankings I posted straight from the USA South record book showed"

What's wrong with that picture? A 2-8 record doesn't equal .500. Could be a typo...could be the same laxidasical approach to record keeping.

We need more discussions about last place...   :D

Moving on actually.  I haven't created a formula in a while so I figured I would come up with one.  I call it the D3 Football State Recruiting Index. It is an index that points out how easy it is for a d3 school in the state to recruit players from thier state. Take a look and see what you think.  (This doesn't mean that state is better then the next all it means is how well a d3 school can recruit from thier state.)

4913   WI
1672   VT
1439.3   CA
1058.4   MN
1018.5   OH
905.3   NY
869   IL

751.5   NJ
656.2   MA
546.5   TX
502   PA
347   MI
307.8   WA
300.7   IA
269.2   VA
232.8   MD
201.6   CT
164.6   IN
145   OR
73.5   MS
70.6   TN
69.1   MO
59.5         NC
54   AL
53.5         KY
41.7         CO
33.3         NH
32.4         GA
27.3         LA
22.3         RI
19.5   DE
19.5   DC

0   NV
0   NM
0   ND

0   SC
0   SD
0   UT
0   WY
0   AK

Formula uses # of High Schools # of Football Colleges in that state and the # of d3 colleges in that state.

SC for example doesn't have any d3football schools in their state, hence why the # is zero.

VT for example has 88 high schools and 2 football colleges both of which are d3 schools hence why they are so high on the list.  They can recruit any player they want from thier state to play d3football.

I think this is much better then my power ranking formula.

The formula isn't intended for this but you can see some of the top d3 football schools are at the top.

For the purposes of USASouth you can see why VA does better every year then NC. The d3 talent pool is much richer. (Again not really used for that purpose.)

Well, there is still the "then/than" issue.  :)

Oh I don't know about all that.  I am not good with words and I am often making people mad. (Just look at the upper left hand corner.)  However I am good with numbers. When I was in high school while taking trigomentry instead of using COS and SIN and what not I used LOG's to find the legnth of curved edge of a circle.  My formula was off from the real formula by about .0001 and some change. (Ok you are all geeked out now.)  That is one of many stories about some of things I have done.

abnrgr- Don't worry I am not working on a survellence package.  Doing that strictly goes against what I believe.

I believe that issue does come with the way I talk.

When I talk I know I say "rather then"  instead of saying "rather than" I still haven't been able to break it.

May I should go to the ODAC site to ask this question, but hopefully there may be some more Averett fans on here that haven't spoke up lately......

I was looking at Averetts web site today and saw the 2007 football schedule and it has Averett playing Washington & Lee University in Salem. This only gives Averett 4 home games this year. Does anyone have any insite as to what is up with them playing in Salem also does anyone know if this is a day or night game. I have heard rumors that it may be a night game, but on Averetts schedule it has TBA.
