oh, sorry well i am still an averett fan now that the playing days are over

Todd,

This is Chris's dad, belated congrats on a great season last year. I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the dinner and wasn't able to catch up with you at Spring Practice. Hope your summer is going OK and best of luck with your future at McDaniel. I am sure you will do good at coaching.

Any inside information you can share on the board as to who has the inside path at QB for Averett this coming year. I know they have been grooming SB but there were some new faces in Spring Camp that I had never seen.

Don't give any secrets away, you can email me if you want. Don't want Shaw getting his blood pressure up.

Parsons

Thanks, I couldnt tell you whos has the adavantage for the QB spot now.  Thats the one thing I liked about our coaches is that everybody had to earn their spot during camp regardless if you started the year before or not.  I know that the battle for this position is going to be one to watch and will come down to who put in the effort during the summer.  Fairbanks has the most expirience in game situations (at the QB spot), Harbaugh is coming back over from defense who has an arm and can run, and Dixon the new comer this spring will give both of these guys a run for their money once he is comfortable with the offense (he has an arm and can move!) And who knows what kind of freshman they got coming in.  I am sure whoever EARNS the spot will do just fine.

Parsons

Stryffler and Rennegar will also be in this mix but are both still young but will make the decision even harder for the coaches.

Parsons-

What is your take on how the conference will finish?  Some posters believe that Averett lost too much to finish well.  Other's think they will be alright.  I am going to post what I said earlier about the teams.

With everyone posting preseason picks I will throw out mine.

Averett- Worst case 4-6.  Best Case 7-3.  Expected 6-4.

Averett may be a young team but they were good last year and have improved every year. The team could be tested early having 4 away (W&L could be home not sure) games early at places where teams have been playing well lately.  The young team could go 1-3 at best 2-2.  Averett was a different team on the road last year and without the senior leadership they could lose those close games they won.

CNU- Worst Case 5-5.  Best Case 8-2.  Expected 7-3

This might be the beginning of the end for CNU football.  Old Dominion is going to have football team.  Although not this season, but recruiting could actually be tough the next couple of years.  They lost 9 seniors.  Many thought last year they weren't going to be great.  This is CNU football when isn't CNU at the top.  Haven't seen a schedule, so predictions are somewhat blind.  The two losses they had last season are coming to POMOCO.  Not an easy place to play.

Ferrum- Worst case 2-8.  Best Case 5-5.  Expected 3-7.

What happened to Ferrum last year.  They showed flashes of good and flashes of just plain bad.  The first two games should show where they stand for the rest of the season.  Average to below average teams.  They graduate quite a few players from a team that went 2-7.  They get CNU and Averett at home this year.  Could be good wins if they play like they did at home like they have done in past years.  I wouldn't bet on it though.

Greensboro Worst Case 3-7  Best Case 6-4  Expected 5-5.

The pass defense was top in the conference.  4 of the top 10 tacklers were freshman or sophmore.  The ROY on defense is coming back.  It looks like most of the defense is coming back.  Biggest issue will be the offense and TO's which seems to have plagued this team for years.  Big parts of the O-Line will be back and of course All-Athlete Torrey Lowe.  Plus a new offensive coach.  Worked with the spread offense at NC A&T(check website for article.) Not expecting great things but 5-5 will be best in program history.

Maryville Worst Case 3-7  Best Case 6-4.  Expected 5-5

Maryville had an up and down season.  They were a very good or a very lucky 5-5 team.  Won some close games last year. They are going to need some of that luck this year.  Schedule plays in thier favor early on.  If they get enough momentum going they could finish above 5-5.  Concern is the defense it was ok, but if they want to finish at the top they are going to have to do better in the redzone and get more picks.  They are going to have to do it without Colby Townsend. Traveling could wear them down.  For thier sake they better hope it doesn't.

Methodist Worst case 2-8  Best Case 6-4 Expected 4-6.

Methodist showed how important it was to have a great QB by not having one.  It was the first year without Chris Roncketti.  They are going to have to be a more consistent team if they want to return to thier greatness.  They lost some close games last year.  The offense just needs to be better.  They were a young team last year and still finished 4-6.  The experience could boost them back near the top.

NCWC Worst Case 3-7  Best Case 7-3  Expected 4-6.

NCWC lost some games last year they probably shouldn't have based on the way they played last year.  They have to travel to MU (plays well at home)  Plus go to CNU and AU never easy places to play.  They are going to Wesley and bringing in Wiedner who was 7-4.  Not easy games.  Offense was great last year and they have to bank on that.

SU Worst case 0-10  Best Case 3-7.  Expected 2-8.

For a team that only scored 88 points last year.  No one can expect much out of them.  They have to travel to the top two teams from the conferece last year.  Road won't be an easy one for them.  Haven't seen a schedule yet but I don't think it really matters.  SU needs to get themselves on the right foot.  They were the 2003 and 2004 Co-champs.

not sure how accurate the transfer out rate for football is, but the monarchs incoming class is usually about 95% freshman

That transfer rate was for the entire student body.  I wasn't trying to imply that Methodist football had just transfers on their team.  I was just wondering why that number was so high. Would it be the cost?  I know if Methodist is a first choice school. I know a few people I grew up with transfered out of one school and go to another, because the other was thier first choice to begin with.

I agree that the Fighting Scots had an up and down season. Not sure I would call them lucky. I only saw the Ferrum game in person but saw a solid/scrappy bunch a few quicker skill players away from being a 7-3 or 8-2 team. They were 3 and 3 in games decided by a TD or less. I admit I have a bias but I am going to disagree  :o with your prediction. I say worst case 5-5, most likely 6 -4, best case 7-3.  Even though it is not a conference game, I think the Centre game is a critical game for the Scots in week 2. They certainly can't overlook anyone but LaGrange is still a game they should win. (even though I am sure they will be an improved team) If the the Scots start out 2 and 0 and can remain healthy, 8 and 2 is not out of the question. Certainly, the Scots will need to get some breaks to do that.  8)

What is a Fighting Scot? I was certain it was  a reference to the Scots-Irish.  That is why I used the luck reference.  8)

I know some folks from those countries as well - and you are so right!

Parsons good career  man, good job up there. From one champ to another, i really enjoyed watching you play. However in '05, it was a little nerve racking in those final minutes but you showed some class out there man.

I think the reason for transfers is one of two reasons. First as you said, the cost. It is def more expensive to go to methodist than it would cnu. A lot of kids come to methodist, and leave cuz it is too expensive. Next is family reasons. I think about a kid on our team 4 years ago, he transfered frmo a school in kentucky to come here cuz he was having family trouble. I think alot of this stuff has to do with transferring.

OH YEAH, ITS ABOUT FOOTBALL TIME BABY!!!!!!!

I even had a dream last night that I was talking to an athletic department staff member at CNU and I was  inquiring about my season tickets!

I need professional help!

AllSky7,
I agree that the Scots are in need to start the season strong in their non- conference games. It would certainly pay dividends during the conf. portion of the season. Centre is always well coached and can certainly be a great match-up for the Scots. It would be awesome to return to Honaker Field for the home opener against Huntingdon with the Scots having a 2-0 record. Also, you really should try and get to Maryville to see the Scots play at Honaker, the community and students are really beginning to explode with support for the team.

Pride,
The nickname Fighting Scots came from the fact that there were quite a few Scottish settlers in the Southern Appalachians. Most from the Highlands. And, as you know they were a proud people who would defend their beliefs with great passion(See Braveheart). So remember, when you hear the Bag pipes realize that The Fighting Scots are on the way to battle.

Also,
To everyone I want to wish you a very Happy Fourth of July. Remember  to thank all of those who have proudly served our country so that we might be able to live in independence. They have all paid a great sacrifice to maintain this freedom.
