The Dale Carnegie books are considered, by many, to be the premier books on the subject of leadership. They are not books about "stand around the camp fire and hold hands am play nice" (proper use, the statement is parallel, but I do think there is an extra and in there.  ;D)

I do not believe you can read a book and become an effective leader,  I believe people are born a leader or they are born a follower (my opinion, you are welcome to yours).  Good leaders have "it"...I don't know what "it" is but all great leaders seem to have "it" and those who do not possess "it" will never possess "it."  Peyton Manning has "it" and Michael Vick does not.  It is not something you can find in a book, it is only found in you.

I do not think I'm better than you and I doubt Narch does.  You perceive criticism as arrogance I guess, and therefore believe that we think we are better than you.

I guess you know Papi is a senior Petty Officer (USCG) in command of his own boat and trains special boat tactics.

I would have to support his contention on leadership since he has done it under the most appalling conditions imaginable. What he says IRT leadership is straight dead on.

You can teach "leadership techniques" but not leadership. The second you are born you are or you are not.

But hey we still dig you :) I have taken worse beatings here. Most deserved.  ;)

psbbg - you may find this hard to believe, but i actually think you're probably a pretty good guy...'nova is a solid judge of character, and he seems to like you, so that's enough for me...if i didn't like you, i would simply allow you to continue to twist in the wind...my hope all along has been that with help from my needling, you'd figure some things out...hasn't happened yet, but i figure it will sink in at some point

and i will argue a point...nothing i've ever said to you has been personal...i've simply made comments on what i've observed on these boards...i stand behind every statement i've ever made regarding your butchering of the english language (and, subsequently, what your writing says about your education) - unlike you, i've never questioned any personal attributes about you that couldn't be directly interpreted by reading your posts

...and you're right...you will probably never work for me...for many reasons, but primarily because you probably would never want to do what i do :)

Narch that is what you should have said in the first place. The last one did sound a little arrogant.

I handle criticism very well, I grew up having parents that are very critical.  My father has four brothers and a sister because of that everyone of them had to work hard to get what they wanted. My father instilled that into me. I bought my first car. (It was used and it lasted 3 years, but I still bought it and I was 16 at the time.)

Papi-
I agree that leaders have to be born but those that aren't can learn what it takes to be one.  Maybe then those people can apply it elsewhere, even though they are not true leaders.

I am not going to name names, but grammar can be taught to people, and those people may never how to use what they were taught.  :) I believe this to be true, Albert Einstein was terrible writer, but he of course was better in other subjects.

There is a class that I think shouldn't be taught the class is ethics.  Everyone has a different view on what is ethical and what is not ethical and I don't think the class should be taught.

PSBBG...I meant to add this earlier but got a little worked up and forgot it.  Maybe the reason MU has a high transfer rate (I'm not sure it's higher than the average D3 school because I haven't done the research) is due to its location.  Many of MU's students are military or military brats/wives.  Take me for instance, I was a drilling reservist all during my time at MU.  When the US started gearing up for the war in January 2003 I was called to active duty (in my final semester no doubt).  Now since I transferred to a different university to finish my degree I assume I would be listed as a transfer.  Not because I did not enjoy my time at MU but because of circumstances beyond my control.

You can bet that ABNRGR has "IT" although he can't speak of 'it' because 'it' did not happen in a country that does not exist  :o ...and you can bet that he has done under the absolute worst possible conditions.
ABN...I'm still waiting for you to come down to Lejeune so I can get you out on the boats and show ya how to drive one like your hair was on fire and your butt was catching...or maybe vertical insertion is a little more your style  ;);)

I'm now anlyzing this statement for grammatical correctness.  ;D

My wife is a nurse - hospitals fill up when it gets hot outside.....people lose their cool and people get shot, stabbed, and grammatically assaulted!!

Hey PSBBG - we need a new formula. Call it the Karma Factor......it should measure karma points considering number of posts. Also, adjustments need to be made for grammar errors, pointing out grammar errors, grammar tutorials,  and also "instant classics".

See what you can do!
