I am at NAS Brunswick 24-27 Jul. Let kow know if you are smoking cherry Ensigns up there.

GC-Q may just smoke some Pride this year :)

There's probably a foot of snow in Maine right now...   ;D

There used to be a great little German pub in Brunswick, but that was six or seven years ago.

To bring us out of the cereal debate and back into a football debate, I have a question about colleges and college football, is it possible for colleges/universities to have a "character" requirement for addmission?

With all the problems of a few players in the NFL right now, there has to be a way to screen those players.  It not only looks bad for the professional team, but it looks bad for the college/university as well. Or maybe these problems start at the college level and are just brushed aside, not to specifically point out a unversity but a president had to step down in the mid-west because of a murder cover-up.

PSBBG:

How would you propose schools screen kids?  Aren't juvenille (minors) records sealed?

And here's something to ponder: a few years ago Florida State football coaches were allowed to recruit student/athletes  ;) from the FLORIDA PENAL SYSTEM.   The problem is far from just an NFL issue...  But I guess schools are trying to change:  Two seasons ago there were 700 youth attending a Miami (Fla.) game for the "Join a Team, not a Gang" program. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that was the MiamiU-FIU brawl in 2006.

Well even if they are juveniles, I think in the matter of whether or not a kid has done some "time" should be available to a college.  I don't think it is fair to the safety of the students, if that information isn't released.  Now I am not saying the student shouldn't be accepted, but the information should be available.  References are often included in the interview process, if not it should be.  Every school has entrance exams for class placement, I am sure there is one that was developed by some doctor that measures the character of a student.  I think something along those lines.

In my opinion character is the action you take when no one is looking, therefore I do not believe there is any kind of exam that can measure character.  The only way to judge a person's character is to judge their previous actions.

I agree 100% with the Admiral.

Looks like SU released the 2007 Football Preview: http://www.su.edu/athletics/default.cfm.

Not sure what to make of our chances this year, but there is nowhere to go but up.  Along that line of thought, here's to hoping SU can turn things around in all sports this year!

I agree with you 100%.  The example my Dad taught me (and I have passed on to my sons) involves finding a wallet with money and identification.  If you are walking with a group of responsible friends, you will, of course, try to find the owner - perhaps partially because others are watching.  The true test, however, is when you find it and no one knows you found it except you.  A person with character will make a good faith effort to find the owner.  To me, a young child is malleable, but once a person reaches age 13 or 14, I believe their values are somewhat set.  That is not to say a later experience such as the military, a coach or other strong mentor can't modify behavior somewhat, but I still think basic values are entrenched once you reach puberty.  Peace

I think those that have answered my post understand that it really is hard for a college to figure out the "character" of an enrolling sttudent.  The character issue can be figured out ONLY based on past teacher and record of the student.  However I still think the character should be used as an entrance requirement, a way to determine a "good" student is still up in the air.

Well for players I know we used to get the "character" question when a college first inquired about a potential player. They loved to hear "no problems with this kid", so PSSBG is correct with "past teacher" being used as a yard stick.

Papi is spot on.........again....... IRT to character.

You've heard the saying "I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do"

Sounds like character huh?

Anyway............ "Air Guilford"

Hey abnrgr, good to see you on board.  I saw Coach Kiesel with his family at the Greensboro Grasshoppers minor league baseball game today.  He said he had a LOT of good recruits this year, but he didn't elaborate.  He said it was, indeed, going to be "Air Guilford" again this fall.  :)

abnrgr

Hasanova-Thank you. That was a first ;)

"thank you Clarice....thank you"........

I just hope he got a mobile RT on the O-line to protect Voggie's blind side. He is a southpaw right?

I hope Guilford does run the "air" game again this year. Hopefully, Greensboro will again pick off Guilford 5 times this year.  Greensboro returns a most of a defense that tied a school record for INT's in a season and INT's in game (Guilford).  They just can't let them score 36 pts.

I was thinking about this the other day (my fantasy draft is this week, lets just say I am the Marty Schottenheimer of fantasy football. If you know anything about him, you'd know what I am talking about.)  Any way my question is what do ya'll think makes a great football team (not fantasy)? I am talking about what must a team have to be successful.  Is there a philosphy you think generates success? Anything?
