Old Ref

I can understand the view from both sides. After having played and then officiating for over 20 years, I came to realize that  each participant is going to have good days and bad days. I know as an ex ref, if one official had a bad day, the entire crew was usually demonixed. Thr rest of us understood that. The proof always came at the end of the season when individual performance was analized and those receiving the higher ratings were usually rewarded by receiving play off games. That did not mean that those not selected were any less capable, it only meant that a few demonstrated performance that usually refered to consistency and the individual coach's gradings. As you can understand, If your team received what the coach considered to be fair calling, then naturally you would receive higher ratings. I guess it all boils down to individual opinions......

Flat out, Hill should have gotten player of the week for offense.  4TD's in one game is great no matter what level you play.  It was overlooked, because he deserved it.  Hill just go out there and play hard and you may be rewarded at the end of the year with POY.  Either way good job, O-Line too.

No argument on that point at all.  8)

wow...2 pages of comments based on one little post...good stuff :)

there has been some fan perception around the league--it's been pushed on this board as well as the hoops and baseball board--that mu somehow gets special treatment from the conference officials because the conference offices are located in the riddle center on the mu campus - i wonder if somehow, on a subconcious level, this perception may have worked in reverse...is it possible that if 2 athletes have really good weeks deserving of recognition (which is the case with this particular award) and one plays for mu, that the perceived favoritism could sway the outcome of the award away from the monarch student-athlete? i don't think this is the case, but it is one of those things that makes me say hmmmm....

bottom line is this...the young man from m'ville had an outstanding week, and obviously positively impacted a scot win - mike hill had an outstanding game and helped keep the monarchs in the game against a very talented guilford team...both are outstanding players and deserving of any praise they get - my glasses are a bit green and gold tinted, so i personally think mike hill should have been given the nod (that and the fact that i'm pretty sure 186 is a lot more than 138 and 4 is double 2 :)) - as long as there are awards, there will be debate, and this has been, for the most part, healthy debate

I think it much more probable that the determination was made that Hightower's 2 TD's in the 4th Q were key in the Scots W. Yes, 186 is greater than 138 and 4 is double 2 but  6.3 yards per carry is greater than 5.6. It is also true that Hightower's 12 points is 55% of the teams overall total of 22. 24 is 51% of MU's 47 for Hill.
Bottom line...the POW award is based on more than just pure numbers or Mr. Hill would have won the award. I think that is the way it should be. Some weeks pure numbers will win the award because there may not be another performance like Hightower's to consider. This is in no way a reflection on Mr. Hill. He had a great game. I'm sure he is a fine RB and will surely be rewarded for his performances down the road. Sometimes making this choice can be a tough call. I wish him the best. Except  on Oct. 27th. I will be at Honaker Field for HC pulling for the Scots. My chainsaw is serviced and ready to go if those trees planted on the Court St end of the field are going to mess up the tailgating.  :D
For the record: I AM a former Fighting Scot so my glasses may be tinted a little too. BUT, I would still feel the same way if this situation were in reverse. Winning is the yardstick we use to measure success. It only makes sense then that if we are going to honor individuals for their performance, then the W should be an important factor that we consider.  8)

I wonder the same thing about the league office sometimes overlooking MU players in a close decision. But being said I think before the horse falls over dead from the beating we can all concede that Mike and Rommel had great games and I doubt either one really cares who got the award of the week.

AllSky suggest you pack the chain saw and get there early to start the cutting  :o

On a seperate question that isn't easily found in media guides or web sites, how many of the conference schools have the football team share the field with the soccer teams? I know Murvul has a seperate facility for soccer program.

Further side note abit off footbal but still on because of the MC dual conf. ties: Lambert has three USAC teams on the basketball sked this season including Averett twice. Noticing that trend on several other GSAC skeds, could the two conferences be purposely establishing closer ties? or is it just getting more convenient to go to the USAC to find teams willing to play?

They are South Region D-III games and therefore more valuable than a Martin Methodist or a Pensacola Christian.

I still think that the GSAC is acquired by the USA South, and there will be no loss of AQ's. ;)

AdmiralPapi

Not sure about others but I know Methodist has separate facilities for football and soccer.

I think we all know that GC football and the #2 soccer team(GC) in the country play at seperate fields.

Another thing with GC out of town, I will still get my d3football, I will be at the AU-Guilford game.  Who do I root for in this game? If anyone will be there, well let me know.

PAPI- I agree with what you said about being an O-Lineman. As O-lineman we look at things in perspective like this: If a back rushes for 200 yards, hes a great back. If he rushes for 15 yards, then your line is terrible. If a QB throws for 300 yards and doesnt even get touched, hes great. If he cant throw a lick, then his line cannot pass block. Playing OL is a non-rewarding job, but at the same time, we all take pride in knowing that if the RB or QB gets POW, we had a part in it. We had to do this at Methodist. Hill rushed for 1,000 yards in 2005, and chris threw for 2,000. None of us on the OL got any respect only giving up 4 sacks on 150 attempts all season.
I am facing the same thing now as a coach. My Offense has 1007 yards rushing right now in 3 games. We have 121 points and only 12 of those have come throwing the ball. We run around here. But every week in the paper, they talk about how good the runningback is. That doesnt bother my players, because i told them exactly what i told you, that it takes a person who does not like to be in the limelight to play oline. But at the end of the game and you have 500 yards total offense, you can feel good cuz you know you had a hand in it.

GO MONARCHS!! 2005 Conference Champs!

Never called the media ignorant nor even suggested that .... your words, not mine. We obviously disagree which makes for healthy debate but to suggest that I am name calling or suggesting the media at large is not informed is simply not accurate.

Pat Coleman

OK -- whatever. Two media members read your post and thought that was a shot at the media, so perhaps you could choose your words more wisely the next time.

The clock maybe ticking down for the Hornets being in the USAC. President Davis in today's SU school paper wrote in his column that at the next ODAC meeting of school presidents he will make a formal request to join the conference. Many here have thought this would happen. It has been no secret that SU has always wanted to get in the ODAC from day one of the football program. Chances are this will happen. Its just when is the only question.

Soccer and Football are played on the same field at Averett. (That includes Womens and Mens soccer) Therefore the field takes a beating. Averett is on the road the whole month of Sept and won't step on the field until Oct. Just think what condition the field will be in by then. ??? Plus I was told via the Grapevine that they were late getting grass sowed this year. When I saw the field 2nd week of August, it appeared to be greening up but looked very thin and tender in spots.

Pride.........go with your heart. If you feel like you need to pull for Guilford because of your Greensboro ties, do it; or pull for Averett and support the USA  South. Which ever, just have fun.

Hey, you might want to wear your Greensboro colors and get everyone's attention.

wow...i didn't see the odac for su coming...i thought maybe the cac, but i didn't see the odac...for the usasac and personally, i hate to see su go, so i hope this doesn't happen

i'd be willing to bet on some type of usasac/gsac merger if this goes through - the usasac doesn't want to be left in a vulnerable position if another member decides to leave...

Does anyone know what the Stips are for getting into one confernce or another. If you go based on location, then its a "Cluster ____" For example Ferrum and Averett are right in the middle between Guilford and Bridgewater. Yet Greensboro is next door to Guilford. CNU is in line (up & down Interstate 95) with Methodist and NCWC, but an overnight trip away from Averett, Maryville, Shenandoah and Greensboro as well as Ferrum.

So it's 6 of one and a half dozen of the other as far as travel and location. Has to be something else that drives the conference make up.
