Another hard loss to swallow was forced on to me last Saturday night at Shentel Stadium. It really is not much to say for the score speaks for itself 44-21 . But I will try to give my view of the game :-\. Paul Diggs had 100 yards. The special teams made some big plays at times and the defense picked up two fumbles, plus the team scored 3 touchdowns. But after watching the entire melt down of the defensive unit of the Hornets in the 3rd QT its becoming pretty clear that some changes are going to be made in the off season at SU. Either it will be a head coach or some assistant coaches. CNU is this week and I'm terrified as to what the final score will be on Saturday afternoon. I'm worried that the team has given up and just wants to play the season out as fast as possible. In the 2nd half of last weekends game they just did not play like they wanted to win. Frustration on the field was clear as the Hornets were starting to throw punches and collect penalties, interceptions ect. I would not be surprised if CNU score's into the 50's this weekend. Punter Chris Dooley was one of the only few bright spots as usual for the team. He had 6 punts avg. 38.8 yds and his long one was 51. It looks like he better keep that leg protected as he most likely will have a workout when he plays in Pomoco this week. :-[

I really cannot find anything positive to say about the total SU effort on Saturday.  Special teams gave SU two GREAT opportunities inside the red zone in the first half and SU got nothing out of it.  After holding the Hornets on 4th and goal twice, Ferrum deserved the win.  I think that sums up the entire effort.  It appears that the Ferrum coaching staff made some massive halftime adjustments that obviously highlighted SU's deficiencies on both sides of the ball. Kuddos to the Ferrum staff.

Is it basketball season yet?

Ryan,

Looked for you Saturday night but never found you. However wasn't able to get close to the sidelines there at Salem. Those folks are scared someone might step on the turf and flatten it. Even after the game they made the parents walk out the gate and out into the parking lot, back to the back gate; in order to see their sons. (seemed like a mile walk) Plus didn't understand why they wanted everyone (both W&L & AU) to sit on the same side. That could have been a problem. The Salem staff must have had issues or just been tired after the 1PM game. They certainly weren't as friendly as I have heard people say they are. Also, the proceeds of this game was to go Habit for Humanity, but other than the couple of words the announcer made before the game, nothing was said and never saw anyone from that organization in attendance.  ??? ???

Let me know if you are going to make any of the other games and I will attempt to due a better job and locating you.

Kickerdad,
I spent about the first half on the sidelines, and then chatted in the stands the rest of the game with AU's SID. So, I was around, just not as mobile as usual.

And unless Averett makes it to the playoffs, that was probably the only game of yours I'm going to make this year. Next season, perhaps.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Well, I guess it will be next year then. Sorry you didn't get to see a better effort from Averett. We've shot ourselves in the foot over and over the last two weeks. We should have won against W&L....but too many mistakes. We beat ourselves with dumb mistakes.

Kicker dad i'm not quite buying in to this shot our selfs in the foot theory, I belive that Sr. class last year may have been a bit to much to lose. I think its going to be a few years till AU can be that strong again

Chowan to join CIAA football conference in 2008

The Associated Press

Chowan will join the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as a football-only member beginning next season, school and league officials said Monday.

"Chowan University is thrilled at the opportunity to become a part of the CIAA football culture," president M. Christopher White said.

Chowan, a private Baptist school with an enrollment of about 900, has been an independent since moving to Division II two years ago and joins the country's oldest conference for historically black colleges and universities. Chowan is located in the northeast North Carolina city of Murfreesboro, near CIAA member Elizabeth City State.

"Our vision for the CIAA is to grow all aspects of the conference including educational synergies, athletic competition and to create a dynamic mixture of culture, history and geographic relevance," conference commissioner Leon G. Kerry said. "We feel that Chowan University joining our football program is a great step on that path."

wilburt:

Interesting article about Chowan.  Lincoln's Football program will resume back into the CIAA in 2008.  It looks like Lincoln and Chowan will be replacing Winston-Salem State and North Carolina Central that moved up to the MEAC.

Lincoln is currently playing alot of CIAA schools in other sports this season in preparation for officially joining the CIAA.

Actually Lincoln is starting intercollegiate play in 2009. The 2008 Lincoln season as a club season.

Showstoppa,

I agree that Sr. class was a tough loss. However it is not like the Sr's,Jr's and So's that are playing today didn't have experience. They did.

When you jump offsides 7 or 8 times @ game and the opposing team is in the red zone, that's giving them yardage that they aren't earning. When you let your QB get killed because you can't move your feet or can't get out of your stance fast enough that is unacceptable at the college level (whether you are playing D1 or DIII). Unncessary penalties for unsportsman like conduct, pass interference, face mask on a big play by the other team is shooting yourself in the foot. Letting them return a punt 60 yards when you had two guys standing in front of him when he caught the ball and when you do get the lead you let them run the ensuing kickoff back 60 or 70 yards and lose that momentum is shooting yourself in the foot. Defense not being set and ready because someone can't get the defensive signals right and the other team is at the ball and snapping before you get down is unacceptable. Averett was bigger and faster on both sides of the ball but couldn't get out of the muck to take advantage of it.

Dag nab it, I swore I wasn't going to get my blood pressure up over these losses but to sit there two weeks in a row and watch them self destruct over stupid things is tough to accept. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they could or should have beat Guilford, but they could have made it more of a game than it was. I am saying they should have beat W&L. But that's all over with now and we will have to go on to the next game. They are a better team than what they are showing. They just need to calm down and play football.

Well Fisk doesn't have a football team, but as Pat Coleman  :D is well aware Fisk is playing a number of D2 schools in the SIAC and a number of NAIA schools across all sports.

Fisk's AD is ready to move to D2 like Lincoln.  The school just has to get its ducks in a row financially and otherwise!

The basketball team is likely to have another mediocre year.  The only D3 schools on the schedule ar Huntingdon and Rust.  We do play Morehouse for the first time in at least a decade, and have resumed a series with in state rival Lane College.  So the alumni are happy about that!

Eh-You

kickerdad - not sure i follow you. granted, I haven't seen them play this year but your first comment was "dumb mistakes", then you ranted about everything from technique to special teams to coaching. I'm not really saying either way because I haven't seen it first hand. is it dumb mistakes or is it a complete trainwreck? If it is as bad as you say then doesn't it have to be b/c of the lost players? The coaching staff isn't that much different is it?
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

My comments are based on what I witnessed. You will have to judge for yourself after you see them. Bottom line it was dumb mistakes. I will admit that "I Think" there were a couple of times at Guilford that I felt like the coaching staff was confused or whatever and Dunlevy admitted in the Danville Register Bee that he and his staff would take blame. But come on, if they were all true freshman I could understand the mistakes, but most of who is playing are Sr's, Jr's and So's. There are a couple of Freshman, but the others are upperclassmen that should know better. Hell, most of them played last year at some point in time.

Maybe I am too much of a hard ass and expect too much. But I am from the old school and when we played sloppy, then we got a foot up our behinds and could expect 50 or more gassers every practice the following week, until we got it right. I understand that you can't make Chicken Salad out of Chicken S---, but these guys are better than this and the coaches are good. In my opinion it is just plain dumb mistakes.

I promise I will leave it alone now and shut up.  (until next time)

Black Panthers

I went to the game on Saturday up in Winchester and had a great time. Ryan and everyone is right that SU's stadium is great. It has to be the best in the USAC and prob. in the top 10 in all of D 3. Ryan you guys at d3football.com should have an article on what are the top 10 stadiums in D 3. That would make for good reading and see what the colleges offer. I wish Ferrum would put some money into our place and put in lights. My only suggestion for SU would be to open up the visitors concession stand for the game. You had one for us but it was closed for some reason and we had to walk to the other side to get any food. Other than that I was envious of your place. Now as for the game, MAN....... SU sucks!!!!!!. I thought we had a bad offence but I will never complain after watching what you all do. Not once did you try any trick plays and you weren't very creative when it came to first downs. You did pass the ball some in the first quarter but after that, nothing. It was all run and most of the time up the middle. I have to admit I did get a little nervous when your special teams were making some big plays against us. My boys Mike and Matt had a combine 270 yards and 4 TD's! I don't know what our Panthers drank at half time but I hope they continue to do it the rest of the year. That 3rd qt. was one of the most exciting I have ever seen in panther football in my short 3 years being here.
