Maryville arrived yesterday with their inflated 4-0 record (alot of air in it)
and they found out  that speed does kill; may the "Little Scotties" REST
IN PEACE.The Scots served the conference well with their out of conference
play. The score was 51-6 with the starters from both sides in the game.
The Scots did exhibit some poor sportsmanship (three calls late in the game)
The Bishops have a week off and then play an always tough Averett Squad.
Don't get on the band wagon BallBOY, not just yet!! Old Ref the defense was
a thing of beauty and the offense is starting to jell, Keep an eye out.
GO NCW!!!!!!

Not sure I would bury the "Little Scotties" just yet. I am/was/will continue to be excited about the Scots season. I knew that they hadn't had a quality W and that NCWC would be a tough game. Congrats to the Bishops! Even as a former Fighting Scot, I was not ready to put them in the category of USAC contender just yet. A win Saturday IMO, would have put them in that category. Unfortunately, that didn't happen so it's back to work. Obviosuly, they still have some work to do to get to that level. MC still has a chance to put together the best season in over 20 years. Hopefully, when I get the chance to see them on OCtober 27th, that will still be the case. GO SCOTS!!

There is still a lot of excitement around campus about the team.  The Scots definately took their lumps this week, so hopefully they can bounce back against Ferrum this week.  I think it is a game that will be a nice middle of the road as far as competition.  They should win (hopefully) and be a good game to get some momentium heading into that juggernaut that is Christopher Newport.  I am sure the coach at Maryville will have his guys ready to play for that game.  Right now they just don't need to worry about CNU until next week and they need to focus on FU.  Well I guess I better get back to work :)
If you wanna go to heaven and walk the streets of gold.
You gotta know the password.
It's GO SCOTS GO!!

new poster to this conference.
Since NCWC has handled CNU the past couple of years, what does it look like for this year? I have some knowledge of the coaching staff at NCWC, the Head Man is very good. I have been putting NCWC at the top of this conference since the year began. Since, the game is in Newport's home turf, could this make a difference? or has NCWC shrugged off road game complications over the past couple of years in Conference play?

As already noted NCW has beaten CNU once. CNU is 19-1 at home in conference games. The only loss being to Shenandoah in the very first conference game in CNU history way back in 2001, and that was decided in OT. So - 19 straight  home conference wins.

But I have to admit, from what I've heard NCW has the type of offense to cause major problems for CNU. NCW is fast and runs well....not as fast as UMHB, but then again, a team doesn't have to win 51-19....just one point is all it takes. I said it a long time ago (maybe last year) - NCW scares me....they play the type of game that CNU has had trouble with so far this year.....One thing for sure....it'll be a fun game to watch! I'm glad it's at POMOCO and not in Rocky Mount!

congrats to mike hill for becoming the monarch's all-time leading rusher - the last 2 games haven't gone exactly the way he or the rest of the offense would have liked, but he is a special back and is a lot of fun to watch - i thought he might have been pressing a bit on saturday...he didn't look as patient as he normally does...but he runs so hard for a guy who tips the scales at about 165 - he told me during his freshman year that he was going to set that record...he was true to his word - congrats mike!

Narch - when doing my 2 sentence blurb for the local paper before the season, I had to get Mike Hill's name in there. He's a good player!

CNU85, the line play of both teams both offensive and defensive will decide
this game. I hear CNU"S defensive line is cat quick. OOOps need to stay
focused on Averett.

CNU85

I agree Smith Reed......the line play will be important....but also the CNU LB group will have to run to the ball and there needs to be coverage on the pitchout.

CNU85

I think the FC/MC game will be fun to watch. FC has put up over 40 ppg the last 2 games (I know it was against AU and SU - but still lots of points). Looking forward to a report on that game from some MC fans!

Nice run down.

Let's be straight up, for CNU to extend this season into post season play they have to run the table in conference play, undefeated this season.  Out right Conference Champions. They are better than pre-season 2nd pick :o But must get better each week and stop the speed option run.  Thats why the new LB's changes and they did a great job against SU. :-X

Uncle Jessie, you have an interesting viewpoint. But I am finding some of your ideas as a bit of a stretch.

Quote from: Uncle Jessie on October 01, 2007, 12:32:08 PM
One thing alot of SU supporters have been saying lately is that Barnes is a bad recruiter. The two teams that he won with and were champions were Walter Barr's kids. He inherited those players.

At that time the two assistants, Barnes and Reed Prosser (now a head coach at local Millbrook HS), were instrumental in bringing in those first couple of classes.  Barr's reputation and local legend stats helped seal the deal on many recruits, but the hands-on recruiting was mainly done by the assistants.  So, in a way, the inherited player argument is slightly flawed.

Quote from: Uncle Jessie on October 01, 2007, 12:32:08 PM
But on the radio they were saying that same thing that at times the team played with no emotion and at the beginning of the game they said that players have been arguing back and forth with each other pointing fingers at each other defense against offence and offence against defense and they said some players have quit the team. It's just another example of how Barnes had this team at the heights of the USAC to the basement. He has clearly lost the team.

There is another huge piece to this puzzle that you've never mentioned: former assistant Terrance Brooks.  Brooks was the soul of those championship defenses and his motivational abilities are legendary.  His approach to strength training and the "we build better ballplayers" mentality are sorely missed.  I would argue that SU maintains the same level of talent on the recruiting trail, but the program has not maintained the systems in place that enabled SU to develop players over their career.

On top of that is the argument made lately as to why Averett has seen some hard times this year - experience.  SU lacks those large groups of 3 and 4-year starters right now, something they enjoyed during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

This is now the Hornets 9th straight loss and in those games Barnes' Wing T has averaged 7 points and shut out 3 times. I have skirted around this in the past saying he needs to change is play calling. Now its just clear. The team needs a change in leadership. Belive me I do not like to say it because he is a nice guy. I personally like him. I like what he belives in and gives respect to the community. But it just comes to a time in everything when you must decide if you should change direction. SU needs to do this at the end of the season.  Someone that can put some new life back into the team...  This team needs to be brought back to life and the only way it looks like it can is have new leadership at the top.

Point taken.  But then, following your logic, you would have to downsize the rest of the fall coaches:

Football  0-5
Volleyball  6-11  (0-9 in conference play)
Girls Soccer   3-6
Guys Soccer  2-10
Field Hockey  0-7

I think it would be different if the other programs at SU were competitive (not even winning - just keeping it close to .500).  But the fact is that SU is not competitive across the board.  So how can you fire Barnes and not hold the rest up to the same standard.

Didn't realize that CNU was at home against NCWC this year.  Although I'm sticking with my original pick of the Bishops to win the conference, history is favoring the Captains.

(hey CNU85 - that's right, history favoring the Newports. That last statement makes me feel like Will Ferrell in the debate scene in Old School...    "What happened? I blacked out.")  ;D

They did better.....but it was SU. Do you think the changes would have been evident had we played a UMHB caiber team?  I'm telling ya, NCW's speed makes me nervous.....I hope the LB changes help and the guys get a few games to start coming together.

As far as the quote "may the "Little Scotties" REST IN PEACE" that shows your age/ignorace level and is not necessary (and you were the one talking about sportsmanship).

That's funny.  Good for PFS for stepping up.  I'd hit you with a +1 karma if I could.
