For anyone interested in the travel diary of three football games in 36 hours and about 900 road miles in the mix, here's the column from the MDT

http://www.thedailytimes.com/article/20071001/SPORTS0104/71001002

I'll give total props to NC Wesleyan. They popped the Scots hard. MC gave up its season rushing average per game in the first four minutes. gave up more ground yards to the Bishops by game end than they had in the first four games combined.
That said NCW was ready for the game, MC did not appear to be. I think young Scots would be more precise when you look down the leading play makers, (Hightower, Wall, Slay, Chewning, etc) the majority are freshmen or sophomores. The line has some whiskers on both sides but even there you're looking at juniors mostly. This team did not look good on the first overnight road trip to LaGrange and looked the same flat way Saturday. I expect the travel arrangements will get a shake up before they roll to Va.

Ginn also had the game plan to beat MC. He used that aggressive rush against the Scots as they dumped passes and ran delay handoffs continually and effectively the first half letting MC work its way out of assignment before the play really developed. You can do that when you have a qb like that. The dump over the middle to Bush out of the backfield capitalized on that. Take a look at Bush's touches coming into the game and the number he had on Sat and you'll see just how well planned the attack was.

As for sportsmanship. I think you had one sophomore from MC lose his cool and he got jerked from the game as soon as the word got across the field to Ierulli what had happened. Not excusing it. Even the Murvul radio guys scolded him for playing innocent afterwards.
MC receiver got a penalty for the fist pump after a tough catch and I couldn't tell if it was just the way he did it that brought  out the hankies or if it looked like the throat slash sign from field level. Bush did the same out of bounds after scoring and got the same treatment so call it what you will. I thought the refs got things back in hand pretty quickly.

I have no idea who'll come out on top when NCW and CNU meet, but I do firmly believe it will be a shoot out.

And props to T Lowe. I didnt get to see much of the game but it was sweet little return show he put on in the 2nd.

SU97, Ah what???
First off you talk about the other sports (once again) in d3football.com and actually try to come off as they are in the same bracket as the SU football team. They are no where close to being on the level as the football team is. I wrote it before SU's athletic department has clearly made the football team (not the volleyball, soccer, field hockey teams or even the basketball teams) its poster child. The university has spent millions into a new stadium, roads, field house building and intends to put millions more into it, for they want field turf installed. When the other programs get a new stadium or are put as high as the football team is on the SU pedestal then I will expect just as much out of those teams as well.
From your lodgic if we are going to get rid of one guy we should get rid of them all. Well if you want to go that far well I say why not. Why should the university except losing? But in reality its not all about wins and losses for most D3 programs is it? Its because the money is just not available to compete at such a high level in all sports. But when a d3 program such as SU's puts millions down then we should expect more than 7 points a game.
You mentioned about SU lacks 3 and 4 year starters. What was the excuse when they had 3 and 4 year guys last year and they werent short in them in 2005. You brought up Terrance Brooks. Who is responsible for guiding the team to a high level that Brooks put the team on years ago? Its the head coach right? You said Barnes and Reed Prosser were the masterminds of bringing in those recruits and the inherited player argument is slightly flawed. Well again 97 who is the one in charge of the recruiting now? Its Barnes right?
But all in all I guess 9 straight losses averging 7 points getting shut out 3 times in the 9  losing games and going back to the start of last year the team is averging 8.5 points and were shut out 5 times is perfectly fine with you. They fact that they have won one game in the USAC the last 3 years is well enough for you and that SU needs to hold on to Barnes. Yeah those are real impressive stats for a head coach. We have a head coach that will not for what ever reason change from a broken system. Even the radio guys are saying to mix it up more and to not fix something that was not broken with Glicks last two starts. When Glick starts off a game like he did for both Ferrum and CNU passing on a consistant basis Barnes for some reason did away with it until late in both games when it was too late. The guys on the post game had a big stink about it in both games about how they could not understand the calling. I'm glad they did. It shows they are not homers.
I would love to meet you at a game and sit with me and explain to me and then to the parnets I sit with and tell us why Barnes is the right fit for this team. I really don't understand how you think keeping him will turn things around and brighter days are ahead. He runs a dinosaur system Wing T, The players are jumping ship and arguing according to the radio on Saturday. It just blows my mind how you think he is the one to stay. Like I wrote before. This is nothing personal towards the guy. Personally I like him. But facts are what facts are. He is not getting the job done in a program that has put millions into it. Even Ryan Tipps wrote how the team wont have any brighter days ahead until they change. I guess he is wrong also? Please this is nothing personal against you but after talking to many other faculty and staff at SU including parents you are the first to belive what he is doing is fine and dandy. Its time for a change. I just cant understand how you think he is doing a good job. (ALOT)

For the D3 USAC fans I'm very sorry for the long response I gave. But Its just so frustrating for me. I love this team the Hornets. I have been to just about every home game and many away games as well. Its so hard to see the team doing as bad as they are now.  I really do feel for the kids and parents. Because I love the team as much as I do when I start up about them I can keep going and going. Belive me, I hate that I feel along with others that Barnes is not the right fit at this time. I don't want to write about how bad the Wing T is. I would much rather write about better times like they were a few short years ago and the great games we had against CNU, Salisbury and others. Like I wrote before about Barnes, I like the guy personally. He's a very nice guy. I just wish he would show he is willing to change and show us that he knows the system is broken. It needs to be fixed. Again its just so hard to see how high and respected they were in the USAC and also in D3 football.com and the NCAA getting ranked being the team of the week also once when they beat Salisbury and now reading how they are now the laughing stock of other posters. Ryan Tipps said it best. "SU deserves better" I cant agree with him more.

Great Players make coaches look great.  If you dont have the players then you throw away a good coach?

SU may have put a million dollars in the field but I bet the coaches salaries wont break a total of 100,000 for the entire staff.

Dont get me wrong I think the offense you guys play is bad but if u can run the ball and control clock and play good defense....then that is what football is about...

Captains on the clock.  It would be a great week to knock off a public school!

You a 100% right. With that who is responsible in getting the right players that fit your system? Its the head coach. Its clear for the system he likes he has not done this.

If your talking d1 then you are correct.

SU doesnt offer scholarships so they will have to take what they can get just like any d3 program (minus the elite).  Some coaches can switch styles based on the talent they have.  I think Methodist does a great job of changing offenses to suit the style of players they have but...that is a double edge sword...

and Barnes dose not even try to change his style not even a little. If he wants to run the no points Wing T then he needs players that fit the system. He wont even run the option any like Ferrum did against us. What he is doing now just is not working. Shut out in 3 games out of 9 and averging 7 points just is not going to cut it in any level.

I agree UJ. I was at the game. when SU was down 14-0, then 27-0, they kept running the ball. There doesn't seem to be a game plan for coming from behind. That allowed CNU to focus on stopping the run.

I have not been able to sleep all night. I've been looking at old posts and came across this one from two years ago. Same problem same story.Man, how things stay the same after all don't they?

CNU85 or other CNU fans. I wanted to make the trip last Saturday to see your stadium but was not able to. I have not been at CNU going back to that great game in 2001. The place was still under construction. Do you have any pics of the place or know of a web site that shows Pomoco well? The CNU web site has two pics, but I was hoping to see more. Thanks

Battered...thanks for the link. Sounds like the WB / Maryville game Friday night was a great one. Would love to have seen it.
Since I missed the Maryville College HC last year (first one in over 10 years) I am really looking forward to Oct. 27th. I will try to track you down and introduce myself. I'll be tailgating on the east end of the field. Don't want to be seen with those tree cutting troublemakers on the west end.  :D
