I was away on vacation for the Shenandoah-Maryville game (mercifully), so I'm hoping someone can explain the coaching rationale behind this decision (if it actually took place);

Fourth quarter, and SU trails 21-7. With about 10 minutes to go, SU recovers a fumble deep in Maryville territory. On 4th and 5, from the Maryville 13, trailing 21-7 with about 9 minutes to go, SU kicks a field goal???

Am I wrong or is this a sign of a team (or a coach) that's simply given up?

Because 5 yards is a long-bomb hail mary pass play for the hornets...

Didn't get a chance to log on over the weekend.  Congrats to Maryville for a good solid win over the Hornets.  After the massive 2 game winning streak it now looks like we lost our mojo out there. Could someone from Maryville please FedEx it back before SU heads to Methodist.

Yeah right.  Averett just better get ready for an 0-10 season.  We had one of those a few years back and believe me it sucks.  Maryville will want to put it on Averett this year after last year's game.  Payback's coming Averett, just get ready for it  :D

I think everyone has already given into that (0-10) being a reality. Most of us (parents) would just like to see them make a game out of it and not give it away by making silly mistakes. (and not get blown out). Right now injuries, people quiting, and bad attitudes, in addition to the inexperience has worn them down. The coaches are doing everything they can to find something that works but they are worn as well.

I also think graduating 25 seniors last year had something to do w/ it too...

Agree, that's the inexperience part I mentioned. Did you see my question concerning tailgating?
[/quote]

Sorry missed that one.  Everyone kind of mixes in for the tailgating.  Most of it is by where the Scots walk on the field, which is like 100 feet away from where the visitors walk in.  There isn't a visitors parking lot.  There is pleanty of parking for everyone.  Just make your way to Cooper Athletic Center and follow the crowd.  I would get there early if you wanna tailgate so you can get a spot close to the gate.  I won't be in town sadly for this game or I could point ya in the right direction literally.  I am envious you will be there and I won't :(  The tailgating is great so you should have fun.

I'd say it's a tall order, but not out of the realm of possibility.  SU is up 4-2 in the series against the Monarchs, but Methodist has had the better of us the last two times out...  last time SU was in Fayetteville it was a 35-0 spanking at the hands of Roncketti.

I was hoping for a nice 4 game win streak to end out the season, but Maryville apparently didn't get the memo.   :(

Narch - I'd say you guys are the favorites.  Hope to see SU pull off an upset and end the year on a high note.

2 game winning streak?  Hoping for a 4 game winning streak? Did I miss a win? The Hornets beat the Pride then lost to NCWC. After that is was a win over the Cougars. No 2 game winning streak. I think all this losing has had an effect on your calculator in your brain. ;)

Oooops...  :D  good look UJ. Thanks for keeping me honest. Not really paying attention to football as much - thank goodness basketball has started preseason.  :D

No problem 97 ;D. Its been along season on all of us. Personally I cant wait for basketball season to start as well. I know SU was not picked to high in the pre-season polls but I have a feeling that they are going to surprise a lot of people. Maybe be a 4th place team going into the USAC tournament.

uj/97 - su scares me this weekend - they've really started to put some things together, and they are a team that will continue to run the ball and run the ball and run the ball...if the mu defense that played against chowan and m'ville, in particular, shows up...well, let's just say they'll have success

su is actually averaging more points per game in conference contests than mu (19.2 to 19.0) - the primary differences are in yardage (mu 381 - su 266) and defensive scoring (mu 21.8 - su 29.5) - i predict a 27-17 monarch win that is a close game throughout, with mu getting a late score to seal it

muftbl51 - i look forward to seeing you on saturday...there is a chili cook-off at the monarch zone this weekend, so you're most likely to find me somewhere near the free chili :)

IT'S A BATTLE FOR FITH PLACE!!  It certainly does not get any better than this.  ::)
I'm curious to see how the Hornets respond to playing the last game of the season. This all could come down to special teams. An area that SU has had problems with all season long giving up big yardage on kickoffs. But the Monarch's have been playing some decent defense in conference play. I was very impressed with how well you played against CNU and also Ferrum. Methodist could be a team that is going to make some noise next season. (I'm not sure of all the graduates you have) I think the Hornets will score somewhere between 10-14 points. The 19.2 points average in league play I feel is more of an aberration than reality. I don't see a big scoring output like we did in the Hornets 2 wins of the season. So a 27-17 score as you predicted could very well happen.

Believe me if the Hornets can keep it close enough that they can run the ball they will be just fine.  All SU does is run the ball which is MU's weakness.  Maryville had 450 yards rushing against them w/ 3 100 yard rushers (And we lost errrr!!).  I think as long as SU will keep the ball on the ground they will have a chance.  If it turns into a passing contest, definate edge goes to Methodist.

I think we have a better chance of seeing it snow in Winchester in the month of June than seeing a passing contest erupt.  ;)

I see how the selection show is going to be on ESPNU this year. This sucks :(. I would bet not many of us have ESPNU. At the very least the selection show should be on ESPN2 and the Stagg Bowl should also be in prime time. Just another example of how the little guy gets stomped on and how D3 get's no respect.

Maybe next year they can put us on ESPN8 "the ocho"...  Sorry for the Dodgeball reference  :D... Yeah D3 gets no love, but at least the 13 lateral performace made ESPN...
