TESTING - TESTING - ONE, TWO THREE . . . . . .

IS THIS THING WORKING?

It is football season - right?

As a GC fan - I feel so alone . . . . .  :'(

Look me up Saturday night at Guilford and say hello.   Not sure where you live, but the Greensboro News & Record is reviewing both Guilford and Greensboro in Friday's (9/5) edition ...  just in time for the Soup(er) Bowl the next night.  Even if you're not in town, I think you could read it in their online edition.

There are four DIII schools in NC ... Greensboro, Guilford, Methodist and NCWC.  Guilford's played MU and the Pride every year since they started football, but has never played Wesleyan on the gridiron.  If we could get this game going, we could have an unofficial NC DIII trophy every year.  Anyone ever heard anything about the Quakers and the Bishops scheduling a game?  No offense meant to Southern Virginia, but this would be a better fan draw and a qualified regional game.

i am so sick of reading about campbell football in the raleigh news & observer and the fayetteville observer that i could throw up...if i have to read one more "i never thought i'd be playing division I football" comment again...you're NOT playing division 1 football...it's div 1aa NON-SCHOLARSHIP, pretty much d3, except with no chance of ever playing for a national title - i hope the monarchs can make a statement to everyone in the raleigh/fayetteville area next weekend

Preception of prestige of playing for an 0-11 DI ,DIAA(or what ever its called ) school means more to some players and parents than playing for a DIII or in some cases a DII team.  Right or Wrong that's how they feel. And in the pecking order of things the papers will lean towrad the bigger schools
Football !!! The ultimate team sport. Anyone who plays DIII football is a winner...

Narch....I tend to agree. I didn't really know anything about Campbell. So, I started the internet research. When I found out they were non-scholarship, I thought, "big whoop". Why the D1-AA label?

Here's a question for someone with time on their hands.....we know there are 239 d3 football teams. How many NAIA? How many D1AA Non scholly? How many in other affiliations similar to d3? Why do schools choose one over another? It would be nice to know how many teams are out there like Campbell, or UVA-Wise, or Southern Virginia, or Newport News Shipyard Apprentice.

Yeah, I know...that was more than one question. I was on a roll.

CNU85

Anybody have the scoop on the CNU/HSC closed scrimmage?

Pat Coleman

There are 92 NAIA football programs this season.
Typically there are about 130 FBS and FCS programs. Not sure about D-II offhand.

Thanks PAt. That was quick. Any idea how many FCS are non scholarship?

Pat Coleman

No, but it's not very many, I think fewer than 25. They keep dropping the sport.

Still....between d3, NAIA and FCS non Scholarship ....that's a ton of schools.

hey - I noticed the ad above about Duke ringtones. Man, they win one game and they have ring tones already?  :D

Agreed Narch....I hope the Monarchs can make a statement against the camels!!!

The HSC/CNU scrimmage wasn't really "closed" b/c there was quite a bit of people there.  CNU won by 2 TD's.  Defensive starters looked good.  HSC's first team offense didn't score on CNU's first team defense but scored on their second team.  As for the offense, they scored 3 TD's on 3 consecutive series after going 3 and out on their first possesion and losing a fumble in the redzone in the second series.  I'm not sure how many seniors HSC lost from last year but they looked really young and unexperienced.  Hopefully the Captains are ready for Saturday.

I can't wait for the game this weekend. We need to really have a big game with a large crowd expected. I noticed the paper say MU is expecting 10,000 for this one. That would probably be a record if they get anything close to that.

There are just way too many schools in NC right now, and it is getting harder for the D3 schools to recruit. Last year UNCP opened and stole some thunder, and now Campbell is doing the same. Kids are more likely to go to a subpar bigger school than a established smaller school. Some of these kids need to realize what they are getting themselves into.

Interesting thoughts...

I think that those kids will realize what is happening.  Kids have been going to Davidson to play non-scholarship D-I FCS ball for a long time.  Pembroke tapped into a local market in D-II.

The thing that is driving schools to add football is gender ratios in the respective student bodies.  Recruiting will get tougher, but I also believe that the mindset that needs to occur in the South is that D-III ball is good ball and that it is an excellent option for "student-athletes".

Was there not enough football talent in NC for the teams there?  Most states will not declare that they have too many schools for the "paltry amount of football talent" that is in their state.

An attitude change in the state about D-III can make a huge difference about the success of the programs there.  That is what I try to fight in circles who do not know about the virtues of D-III!

At D-III, the student-athlete can go to class, practice, study, sleep. Go to class, practice, study, sleep. Go to class, practice, study to stay eligible, sleep.  Game day.

Alternatively, the former student-athlete goes off to "big school".  The routine becomes "he/she skips class, parties, gets hungover, oversleeps, misses class, flunks out with thousands of dollars of school loans and no prospects for a decent job."

You hit the nail on the head with the gender ratios!

Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
