Any news on the Monarch Game?
Any fool can circumnavigate the world sober...it takes a real sailor to do it drunk!!!

the best thing about hannah coming through is that it postponed my daughters pop-warner cheerleading debut until sunday and allowed me to see the monarchs in action :)

i saw some things i liked about mu in a 32-21 win today - first, mirales had a really nice day kicking the ball with 4 fg's...2 from 40+...and really good ko's (can you believe it, i opened up talking about a kicker :)) - second, mcguire ran HARD today...that kid is a little bowling ball - i thought we'd see more of harrison, but he got just one carry - teague is going to be just fine at qb...maybe better than fine - the kid has all the arm you want...he had a 44 yard completion with only about 3 yards of rac that was right on the money and he threw a couple other deep balls that were in the air 50 yards or more - he throws a really nice ball, but needs to put a little more "touch" on it - he's a really good runner, too - i think he could shock some folks when the coaching staff takes the cork off the offense and opens things up - the crowd was great (nowhere near 10,000...probably more like 2,000)...the mu fans were really into the game, especially early...and lot's of gold in the home stands for today's "gold rush" game - the pep band was AWESOME (MU will have a full marching band next year...can't wait!) - there were temporary bleachers brought in for the campbell folks, but they didn't travel nearly as well as i anticipated - they had 5,800 for their home opener and mu is only 35 miles from buies creek - they probably only brought around 600, or so fans, but they were all clad in orange...gotta love the spirit

the final score is very deceiving, and points to my only real frustration with this game - i thought the mu coaching staff played it too close to the vest - in the first half the monarchs were in the red zone 3 times and were really vanilla offensively...and they got three fg's - they opened up a little more in the second half, but it was still pretty conservative - i also thought the mu players/staff let up a little after going up 32-7...they went to a 3 man front with no blitzing and everyone sitting back in zones...and gave up a lot of yardage and 14 points - it's not the most sportsmanlike thing to say, but i wanted a "statement game" from the monarchs...41-10 or something like that would have sent a strong message to fans, media, high school coaches and recruits in the cape fear region - while the game was not as close as the 32-21 score and box score would say (cu got over 1/3 of it's yardage after going down 32-7), the campbell folks will be able to spin this off as a moral victory for a first year program - i really think if the monarchs had put the pedal to the metal, it could have been a blowout

i hope this is a game that will happen EVERY year - it's a natural rivalry from a geographic standpoint - many students are choosing between mu and cu when they are looking at schools - the proximity will mean good attendance numbers at both institutions - i think it's a great rivalry in the making and i hope it continues for a number of years

Narch,

Thanks for the update. What's with the information blackout? The game was over hours ago and still nothing on the scoreboard or even on the MU website.

Anyway - thanks for giving us some info. You know, usually you and I are in the same ball park on most things. But I can't stop laughing at your post. I'm still trying to figure how someone will spin a loss to Methodist as a moral victory.

Maybe I'm in a humorous mood cuz I'm watching Jeff Dunham right now!!

for some reason the new mu athletic site isn't linked directly from the home page, but the score was up on the new site pretty quickly....http://www.mumonarchs.com/index.aspx

i'll be willing to be the local newspaper will write the story as though the camels kept fighting until the end and were able to give an established program a run for their money even as a first-year program...guarantee it...

Narch,

I forgot about the new site. I even looked at it the other day. Very nice. Old habit took me to the old site. I'll remember next time. I've been looking all day.

CNU85,

You should have made the trip. Actually the weather in Danville was great at game time. The field was dry (it had been covered) rain stopped at arond 10:30 am and by 2 pm kickoff it was hot as sin. Congrats to the eagles they have one heck of a tight end. He looks like he is 8 foot but really he is only 6' 4". Averett gave up close to a 100 yards in penatiles today. Most of that in the first half and by the defense. Every time it looked like they were going to stop BC, they would jump offsides, or do something else stupid. Averett's offense had trouble protecting the QB and they didn't star moving good until the 4th quarter.

Kickerdad,
Does Florida now border Southern VA? LOL

I noticed that Averett had 39 kids on their roster from Florida. Was just wondering if there was a Florida connection or they just liked to winter in Danville?  :)
