I've been saying all year that our weakness in our secondary could be an issue against a team like W&J who throws a lot. And who do we draw 1st round? you betcha.

Now I've been watching CNU every game this year and thinking that we didn't look as good as we have in the past. But somehow we just kept winning. Hell, we won the conference outright for the 1st time. But it wasn't that we were not as good as years past, it was that we were winning a different way. Ball control. We just ground down teams and held onto the ball all game. CNU ranks 6th nationally in time of possession. They kinda make me think of the Tennessee Titans. We didn't blow everyone out, but we kept winning. If we can be successful playing "our brand" of football, we will continue to roll.

Hold on to the ball, control the game, force a turnover or two on defense. The team that wins the turnover battle will win this game. As long as we have the ball they can't score.

Google says 6 hours 49 minutes to W&J. I'll be there. Rain, sleet or snow. Screaming my heart out. LET'S GO CNU!!!

According to today's Greensboro News & Record, Greensboro College has released HC Neal Mitchell after seven seasons.  No indication about a replacement, so I assume GC will conduct a national search.  In the article, the underlying message by AD Kim Strable was that the team was 18-52 in the last seven years and never seriously competed for the USAS title.  I'm sure it also didn't help that the Pride's lost four straight Soup Bowls to Guilford.  It's a tough situation and I sincerely wish Neal Mitchell the best.

Sometimes, a situation like this has as much to do with the schools commitment to the program as it does with a coaches ability to lead and coach. There are certainly other variables that factor in. I am not saying that is what happened here because I know little about GC. I will say that in order to be successful, it must be a two way street. I can speak from personal experience that isn't always the case.  8)

Allsky,

Hit the nail on the head.  Kirby left because the newness factor of the program was fading and the reality was that GC doesn't have its own facilities.  Until GC makes a commitment to excellence in facilities it will matter little what caliber coach we have.  So you can bring in whoever you want but you will just end up firing that person when it is apparent you win by recruiting and you cant recruit without facilities.

Apparently this has been in the works for some time and they will be hiring internally.

Coach Mitch was a good man who had very little support at greensboro. When the school makes a commitment to football the program will be successful. On campus field would help. internal hiring i dont think will happen. Coach Young dc should get the job but i dont think it will be offered.

They wont get much better than mitchell or young.

Change for change sake is what happens in fb but its tough when the people that ran the show where pretty good.

Got a question for current and former D3 players or parents of players.  My son left a 1-AA team this year because of the time requirements.  His day began with a 7:00 AM workout and generally didn't end until after study hall at 9:30PM.  Throw in games on Saturdays plus Sunday evening workouts and there was no time for anything but school and football.  What's a typical D3 player's day like?

Tell your son to go play intramural football if he doesn't like the time commitment.

NCAA rules allow no more than 20 hrs committed to football practice and meetings at all levels of college football.  I imagine most schools (even D-III) range from 18-20 hours per week.

I'm sorry he had to go to study hall, but that usually is a good thing.

When I played we had daily meetings, practice and lifting 2-3 times per week.

Players are required to have 1 day off from any practices or meetings.  That's usually on Sunday or Monday depending on the football program.

Meetings, lifting and practice are usually not required when playing flag football.  Hope that answers your question...

I'm sorry about Coach Mitchell.   Seemed like a good guy and looked like he could really recruit.  I was always scared when we played Greensboro because of the amount of athletes they had compared to our players.

It seemed like they should have gotten better results with those players and would have had a good '08 season after winning 2 early games in the season.

Just to remind everyone that 1 year ago, Coach Cody Bowers died in a car accident and has been missed by the entire Maryville community.  Cody played and graduated from MC in 2004.  He joined Coach I's staff in 2005 and was named as a full-time secondary coach in 2007.

MC's secondary posted 19 Int's in his only season as secondary coach.

Great guy, good friend and loved by many.....

Please pray for his parents and family to help them get through these next several days....

I agree with both of you.  In my opinion, Greensboro does not have good facilities for college athletics.  Football is played at Grimsley HS, baseball is played at an antiquated municipal stadium and basketball/volleyball are played in one of the smaller gyms around.  The administration at Greensboro says they're going to redo the property they bought a mile or so away, but that make take a few more years.  "They" say "the new coach always gets what the old coach needed."  You're right, the newness factor is gone .... Greensboro's had a football program for 12 years now.  I think the lack of dedicated facilities are now what's causing recruiting and win/loss improvement to stall.
