All this talk about "if Elmhurst would have beat (fill in the blank)" is worthless.  One typically learns more from their losses than their victories,  as I stated after EC lost to Millikin, I felt it could be the best thing that happens to them as it would force them to take a long hard look in the mirror and realize that they better pick it up or the season could crumble.
Who knows, they beat Simpson handily, they finish could have finished 14-11 as easily as 22-5.  Simply put, you don't know what happens if a team win, loses, etc.  The season ends how it ends and you live with that.

Good morning Greg!

Thanks for the well-considered response.  Your voice of sanity is greatly respected.

The difference that I see this year is that the CCIW was not its usual self!

We listened to Titan Q on Hoopsville all year vacillating about the up and downs in the CCIW.  I think that the final standings reflect that.  The "perfect storm" analogy hits Elmhurst squarely in its record.  I showed that one more victory would have Elmhurst in the tourney.  I selected the Simpson loss as the one that was not CCIW inflicted, and made my point with that loss.  If the best Pool C in the CCIW was worthy of that Pool C bid, then I would expect its non-conference in-region record to boost it in the deliberations around the Selection Table.

In a 128-team tourney, the CCIW might get 6-8 teams.  We will never get enough inter-divisional play to get a decent Opponents' Opponents' Record.  The D-1 majors restrict the conference losses, so they can boost their RPI's on cupcakes.  I honestly believe that the 20-game conference schedules in the NAthCon and the SLIAC will take away the OOP-boosting-cupcakes that the CCIW used to boost its records in the past (vs. Lake Michigan, SLIAC and NIIC).

Good night, Greg!  See you tonight!  ;)

This is the problem with the current system... the WIAC has been fighting it for years.  In leagues that are balanced and have "bottom-division" teams who play at a high level and can compete with the upper echelon, teams take their licks... and the current system doesn't have any type of system to truly correctly rate the quality of opponents.  A win over a team from a league like the CCIW or WIAC, though it might very well be a "better" win (subjectively, of course...) than a win against a team from a weaker league that has padded its schedule with easy victories.  As such, teams might schedule team A, as opposed to team B.  But in the event of a loss against team A, the loss would be (objectively) seen as a "worse" loss... even though the experience gained could show concrete results, in the NCAA tournament.  Cases such as IWU's runs when getting 3rd in the CCIW are prime examples, as well as UWSP winning a National Championship when they took 2nd in the WIAC (though they did win conference championships the 4 previous years and the preceeding year as well).

I really DO feel for Elmhurst... my Freshman year in Point, we won the conference, tied with Oshkosh and Whitewater, and got nipped by Whitewater in the Semi's.  We only lost 6 games all year (21-6) but all were to conference foes.  Oh that there could be a system to make some wins truly BE quality wins, instead of just assigning point values that aren't based on a proper representation of how good a win really is!

LOL... OS... shortest... college... basketball... player... ever. ;)

Fightintitan2006- check out the front page of d3hoops.com... over on the right side, under the scoreboard... d3hoops.com is actually doing their own broadcast of the game!

Carroll also is an option, as they have a broadcast of both the Augie/Carroll mens game, and the Carroll/IWU women's game: http://wccx.cc.edu/

Not sure Augie has a cast, sorry. Their broadcasts have been off and on this year, which is unfortunate given how good their team is!! :(

I don't think that it was really out of the ordinary at all. It's fairly typical for the champ to go 11-3 and for the runner-up to go 10-4. A 2-12 record is not unusual for the last-place team, and 4-10 is not that unusual for the seventh-place team. If there's anything unusual about it, it's that the four teams in the middle of the pack were bunched together slightly more than normal, reducing the clear separation between first division and second division that the league had last season. But without doing an in-depth analysis of seasons past, I suspect that this particular standings profile is not all that anomalous.

If there's anything that was truly unusual, it was in the record-setting non-conference portion of the season. But that leads to your next point ...

This is my fear as well, and I mentioned the ominous disappearance of all those available CCIW vs. NIIC games when I posted on Selection Sunday after Elmhurst had been denied a Pool C bid. Scheduling is getting drastically more difficult for CCIW teams, and the reverberations are being felt all over the conference.

And it's not just the top dogs such as Elmhurst that are having difficulty finding in-region games. NPU's coach is now being told by other local Midwest Region coaches that the Vikings are no longer welcome as opponents -- and this is a 13-12 NPU team we're talking about that's only one year removed from back-to-back 20-loss seasons! The Vikings are thus being forced by circumstances to play several non-region games next season that Paul Brenegan would rather not play if he had his druthers. Think how much worse the coaches of established programs such as Mark Scherer of Elmhurst and Todd Raridon of North Central must have it.

Bill Harris of Wheaton has the additional headache of having three or four non-conference games foisted upon him every year by the fact that the Wheaton administration insists upon using his winter trip as a general admissions function. No wonder he's forced to play the likes of Principia; he's probably desperate to get any MWR team on the sked that he can, no matter how uncompetitive he knows the game will be. Augie's somewhat lucky in that they have established traditions of playing against several nearby IIAC schools, but I would imagine that Grey Giovanine is going to find himself somewhat more constrained in the future as well.

Scheduling promises to be a crisis of increasing magnitude for CCIW programs.

This may have been directed towards me... I'm still not Old School, I'm Point Special, and yes, I did play for Point.  I played between 01/02-04/05.

We're collecting previews for each team in the tourney on one of the multiregional boards. If I get them by friday I may even be able to stick them in one document for people to peruse. A fun little tourney resource of sorts. Could someone here do one for Augie? Thanks!

I think it is hard to say whether Zach Freeman or Kent Raymond should have been MOP, as both are incredible players and outstanding individuals off the court. However, earlier I cast my vote for Raymond, solely because he helped his team achieve greater success than Zach was able to do for his team. I think that was the deciding factor in the voting.

WAUG is suppose to be broadcasting tonight's game. However, like others the internet connection for Augie's home games has always been a little unpredictable. Hopefully, tonight things will be functional at the WAUG.

kenoshamark

Regarding Kyle Jeffrey, I think there are probably a few reasons he transferred so I won't speculate on that but he indeed does have two years left to play at Parkside.   I would say one of the main reasons is there are 3-4 players on the Parkside team that are from the Racine/Kenosha area that he played against in high school and with on AAU teams.  Parkside should be very strong next year with 3 seniors who will have started all four years and two juniors (including Kyle), one of which is their leading scorer.   I would expect them to be a top 20 D2 team next year.

One of the reasons Kyle came to Carthage was the fact that his dad played at Carthage from 78 - 81.   Carthage recruited Kyle very hard and he decided to leave Mercyhurst before his first semester ended in his freshman year and I think it was a natural fit for him at that time.

ustbumkneez

thanks for the insight, Keno. yeah, Fenderson and Clark were on a pretty good AAU team with Jeffery.
