anyone with any current or updated information on the millikin opening. (thank god littrells gone).  I dont think that Sherer rumor has any credibility. I heard former assistants Jarrett Brown and Marc Smith applied for the position and were amoung the 6 finalists

I have a sneaking suspicion that Marc Smith is gonna get the job. He's posted an 88-49 record in his five years running the program at Keystone College, a D3 provisional out in northeastern Pennsylvania. That record is even more impressive when you realize that he shepherded Keystone's transition from a two-year program to a four-year program. He spent four years at Millikin under Tim Littrell, and played for a couple years in the '90s at Blackhawk College in the QC, so he knows both the institution itself and the downstate terrain where Jimmy Millikin's recruiting presence is the highest. Smith seems to be a young up-and-comer, and that might be more appealing to Lori Kerans than a retread who had failed somewhere else or a high-school coach whose recruiting skills were unproven.

wow sager that was one of the most logical comments you have made in a while. just joking but i feel the same way about coach smith.  By the way having played for and worked under coach smith I know he would be a great fit for millikin.

Thanks.

I see you didn't volunteer a forward to get rid of. And again, it just isn't the way we name our teams. Just like we don't name a team with a point, three wings and a post, though some schools list their lineups that way too.

Pat:

I wouldn't take any **** from these CCIW guys.  Their performance in the tourney, from such a "power" conference, was unacceptable.  They deserve little or no recognition, maybe some honorable mention for some of the pizza places that Sager talked about about 500 posts ago.

Hang in there.

Barton College vs. Winona State ?!?!?!?!?

Did anyone see that?  What a magnificent ending!  Plus, it gets me to thinking how Barton College - a college with an enrollment with less than 1000 kids - winning a D2 national title!  Wow.

Barton also hit a 30 ft 3 at the buzzer in OT to beat Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals. :o

This is D3 Hoops.com, not D2.

No we know there are players and coaches in the MWC who could go D2, so your D2 envy may be showing here.

Take care.

I enjoyed watching that game more than I have any of the D1 games over the past couple of weeks. The last 40 seconds of that game were absolutely incredible. Not only did Anthony Atkinson beat the buzzer with that layup, he scored 10 points in the last 39 seconds and pretty much singlehandedly reversed a seven-point deficit!

Barton won an NCAA-record nine games in overtime this season and, as Sac said, won their quarterfinal game against Grand Valley State on a 30-foot buzzer-beater by Atkinson in OT. They won their semifinal game over (former D3 member) San Bernardino State on an Atkinson FT with 1.5 seconds left. If there was ever a team that deserved the title of "team of destiny" it was the Barton Bulldogs.

Unfortunately I turned off the d2 title game with about six minutes remaining.  It was just too wild for me to watch.  Not enough smart play and fundamentals.  I love d2 basketball; all the individualism and arrogance of d1, but without the athleticism or talent.

It was a shocking score though.  Who would have thought Winona would drop that game of all games.

Yup, that's the D2 I remember seeing. Perfect description also.

Hoops fan, well said.

Anyone have any good stories of CCIW players falling into that boat, and even better how the coach managed to put up with said player?

I know a bunch of guys like that, but who weren't good enough for d2, so they ended up on small, crappy d3 teams in New England.  Usually the coaches handled it by quitting after a season or two.

hoops fan great desciption of D2 . I played d2 after leaving millkin and the players have the same attitude as d1 players. They think they are really good and have that arrogance you are referring to. they are just 2 inches shorted and 20 pounds less.  Also d2 players, some of my teammates included had no concern for academics like they were going to the nba or something. But there was far less structure than at division 3. Having played and coached at the d3 level i would much rather coach d3 players than d2 players.

WTF does that mean?  Did they teach you that in Logic 405 at Milliken?
