Carthage is just not playing good basketball right now. I saw the first meeting with East-West and Carthage should have won that game by 50. I guess that is why they play the game ;). It also seems that Carthage can't win on the road. It hurt them last year and now this year they are going back down that road. Hopefully Carthage can get back on the winning track tomorrow at home.

I don't know details but I wonder if East-West took advantage of the small lineup Carthage puts out there. Who knows, but this could be a long year for the Redmen if they don't get their act together.

Still no Carthage @ East-West boxscore. Since Steve Marovich is as thorough an SID as there is in the biz, my guess is that he was working the Carthage women's game against the U of Chicago up in Kenosha last night while the Carthage men's team was down here in the city at 63rd and Halsted. East-West is pretty much a fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants operation as far as athletics (and sports information) goes, so I wouldn't expect the EWU folks to supply him with much more than whatever the Carthage coaching staff could've gleaned from a quick postgame perusal of the offical scorebook.

Too bad, because in the wake of the Carthage @ Trinity International debacle I'm filled with morbid curiosity to see what the Carthage @ East-West boxscore must've looked like.

That East/West Carthage score is crazy.  As someone pointed out earlier, Carthage should have won this game in doubles.

I am looking forward to seeing how Augie does against Oshkosh.  In the past, the Vikes have been very capable to play up to their opponent (if need be!) and with the injured Delp out, perhaps we'll see some motivated Viking play.  I've seen this behavior from Illinois Wesleyan in the past (amongst others) and it goes like this: a key player goes down to a season ending injury and the team responds with motivated play, led by an unlikely candidate - a candidate who seemingly had no chance to lead before the injury occurred.  No real new idea here, but let's see if it happens.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

CCIW has 3 teams still in the Top 25 in this week's poll and all moved up a least a notch - # 9 Augustana (Previous 10); # 20 Wheaton (24);  # 21 Elmhurst (22) - ao congratulations to each team.  No other CCIW teams received votes in this poll.

This could be a very interesting year.   I see some teams in the Top 25 you don't usually see this time of year. Also, I see a couple of teams lower in the poll compared to recent years; and, the one which stands out is #23 Wooster with a 4-2 record.

As usual, Professor Sager has it right on all counts.  I was manning the keyboards last night, as the Lady Reds and the Maroons combined for 45 personal fouls and 45 turnovers.  East-West provided no stats, and we apparently did not tape the game.  That would normally be a recipe for a disaster, but thanks to student assistant Amanda Djurickovic, we will have a box score sometime later today, hopefully, sometime before Olivet Nazarene tip-off.

Amanda kept stats herself, somehow, and provided me with a beautiful Excel spreadsheet/NCAA box score with the Carthage portion.  I'm just waiting for her to compile the East-West part.  I think she even did a StatCrew-style play-by-play.  I need to find her a job after graduation.

Justin Bertrand also should get some extra court time for Augie with Delp out, but all of the replacements together will not replace Delp's contributions. As someone pointed out it will be up to Washington and the remaining 4 starters to step up their games. Chandlor Collins will see more time as well.

Waller was a good 3 point shooter in the tough Upstate 8 but has seen no varsity minutes this year, as best I can tell from the Augie website. So it might be a stretch to expect him to contribute very much this season. Avallone is a freshman, so I do not expect much from him on a GG team. Unless you're Drew Carstens freshman do not get to much court time at Augie.

Augie's 3 point shooting is way down this year, and even Delp was having trouble getting open looks with only a .342 percentage from 3 point land. Further weakness in the perimyer scoring will really allow opponents to pack it in on defemse against Augie. I think Matt Pelton is the key. He has to provide more scoring and mature at the PG position in short order.

Perhaps Dansand can fill us in on who has excelled in the JV games, as someone will now probably move up to the varsity level, preferably a SG.

What in the world?!  Carthage decides to show up and play tonight after taking the last two weeks off?

Mr. Ypsi

On behalf of ALL the pickems posters who had Carthage over E-W, and all but two of us who had ONU winning tonight, thanks a bunch, Carthage! :-[

Greg, before we all get too humiliated, could you remove the RedMen from all future pickems consideration - thanks. ;D

Since the NCAA has issues with the name, how about the Carthage Enigmas? :P

Nice come from behind win tonight by the Redmen. Djurickovic made a very tough shot with 3 seconds left and showed he had a little John Paxson in him. Paxson was there in attendance watching his son play.

Carthage had some trouble defending the post and this was one of my concerns coming into the season. Nice win by the Redmen and hopefully they can get on a little roll here!!

Terrific game tonight after what has appeared to be two uninspiring efforts on the road. Bowens leads the way with 29 points and Steve Djurickovic drops in 25 along with a game winning 10 foot baseline jumper with 3 seconds to go.

You could tell Bosko was in a very ornery mood from the start as he was barking at the refs just a few seconds into the game as Shemerdiak appeared to get hit in the mouth.  Game was back and forth throughout the first 20 minutes but right before the half, ONU dropped in 4 straight three pointers and things didn't look good going into the half.

Ryan Paxson was unconscious with his range and knocked down 6 of 7 treys in the first half and it didn't look like we had an answer for him but up stepped Trey Bowens who not only scored a career high number of points but completely shut down Paxson in the second half.  Without having access to the box score I don't recall if Paxson even scored in the second half but at most, he only had 4 after the intermission.  Truly a super effort by Bowens after having a couple subpar scoring games.

Steve had another outstanding effort.  I've seen quite a few games over the past 10 years but I don't recall many freshmen from any school who can penetrate as well as he does.  I've said it before, he takes a bump and finishes as well as anyone I've seen at this level and he certainly doesn't have the typical upper body size you would think he would need to do this.  Bosko runs set plays for him off of in bounds where Steve pops out, takes the ball and gets to the hole.   He took another 10 free throws tonight which shows his desire to drive and draw the foul.  He also knows how to use his body to create separation with a little body bump and then hit a 10 to 12 foot fade away jumper.  He is starting to look for the three a little more and if (and when) he develops that shot, it will be very difficult to guard him.  He made a move late in the game where he was manned up with Paxson (who was primarily covering him) and just completely broke him down from 20 feet out and penetrated to the basket with everyone converging and finished for two points.

I thought ONU should have taken more advantage of their size by feeding Phil French.  They started to take advantage of the mismatches late but not as often as they should have.  Carthage ended the game by playing four guards and Milos V. (who stands 6'4") due to Jacklin and Shemerdiak fouling out.

It is going to be an interesting year as I think Carthage will have its struggles on the road but when they have Bowens and Djurickovic playing as well as they did tonight, they should be able to stay with most teams at home.  They got just enough from all of the other players tonight to make the difference but the margin of error is thin for this team.

Gentlemen----

Granted I'm older and my mind is going, BUT------

If little Bosko made a 10 foot (2 point) shot with only 3 seconds left in the game, and Carthage won by a final score of 70-66, doesn't that mean they had 68 points before he made the basket??
Even if it was a 2 AndOne ( ;D) they still would have already been ahead 67-66.
Accordingly, please explain how his basket WON the game.  ???
It seems it would be more appropriate to say it sealed the victory. Or, am I missing something?

The one-third of the schedule provision was in place when I was an SID in 1994. It's not new.
