Like I suggested last week, the ultimate solution for the battle with the NCAA is not just separating Red from men, it is a total name change:

Are you suggesting that Carthago delenda est?

(Pardon the Punic pun.)

Wow, we haven't seen the Cato the Elder quote make an appearance on CCIW Chat since the days of Wiertel, McDaniel, and Garnes.

Cal Lutheran beat North Central in overtime, 68-62, out in Thousand Oaks, CA. Matt Rogers led the way for NCC with 18 points, and was joined in double figures by Jeremy Williams with 14, Reid Barringer with 11, and Mitch Raridon with 10.

North Central (5-3) gets to take out its frustration upon hapless Caltech on Wednesday.

"Trinity is going to win 20 or 21 games," said Carthage coach Bosko Djurikovic. "They don't play in a league that's as good as the CCIW, so when we make a trip like this, we expect to succeed. Half a loaf isn't good enough. We have a chance to finish this trip 2-0, and that's what we want."

Interesting comment on the front page.  So, because a team doesn't play in a league as good as the CCIW, they just expect to win?  Kind of arrogant?  I don't know.  I guess he did give Trinity a backhanded compliment by saying they'd win 20 or 21 games this year, albeit in a "weak" conference.

Yes, I know the SCAC isn't the CCIW or the WIAC!

Thanks for your report OB.
Too bad you didn't get to see NCC's "complete" team play.
Its pretty tough to compete throughout the entire course of an overtime game when you start with one of your top two players out with an injury, and then you lose the majority of your height prior to the OT period. But, as they say, injuries are a part of the game, and you have to be able to stay on the floor if you are going to effect the final outcome of the game.

Looks like the Cards didn't take care of business after they were up by 7 with 5 minutes left. Yet, they had victory in sight until the foul with 4.4 seconds left.
Yes, that was Chris with his hand in the cast. His teammates will just have to step up and play a little tougher AND a little smarter to make up for his loss.

Tri-State fought Elmhurst right down to the wire, but the 'jays managed to eke out a 75-65 win this evening in O-town. Chris Childs had a career-high 19 points, Matt Ryder had 17 points, Brent Ruch had a 15 and 11 double-double, and Ryan Burks added 11 for the 'jays, who never trailed in the game but never had a double-digit lead until the last fifteen seconds, either. The Thunder got as close as two points (59-57) with a couple minutes left, but Elmhurst went 10-10 from the charity stripe in the final minute. Tony Benford had 29 and Andre Patrick had 14 for TSU.

Wow!  I wonder if we'll ever see another game this year where neither Ruch or Burks is among the top two scorers.

The final numbers are a little deceiving, because a bunch of Childs' and Ryder's points came at the free-throw line in the last minute of the game, when Tri-State was in a must-foul situation. You always see the numbers for the guards ratchet up in that sort of scenario for the team that's ahead.

Auge wins 75-61 at Wartburg. Wartburg cut it to 6 in the 2nd half, but Augie put it away at the end. Swetalla looked good again with 18 to lead Augie in scoring. A nice road win heading into the UWSP game at Augie on Saturday.

Augie continues to shoot FTs at a really high percentage (23-27). Perhaps they can give lessons to the Fighting Illini.

Southwestern 82, Carthage 72

Steve Djurickovic, 34 pts (12-13 FT)
Trey Bowens, 11 pts
Milos Vukosavljevic, 8 pts
Logan Derrick, 8 pts
Billy Shemerdiak, 6 pts, 8 rebs
Sean Fendley, 5 pts

Carthage was outrebounded, 37-28, and shot only 22% (6-27) from beyond the arc.

The Red Men led for most of the first half, and were up by as much as 12 at one point (20-8 at 11:26). However, the Pirates finished the last eight minutes of the half with a 28-11 run and went into the locker room up by a score of 41-34. Carthage hung around in the second half, and at one point tied it up and then even went ahead by 2 (65-63) on a Djurickovic jumper with 4:47 left in the game. However, the hosts then went on another run, this one a 16-2 skein over the next three and a half minutes, and salted the game away with free throws in the final minute.

The Red Men are really only an enigma when you look at their opponents first, Chuck. That's an easy thing to do, and it's very tempting, but I think that it's time that we started looking at the Red Men first. And when you do that, the picture becomes much clearer, because Carthage is clearly following a straight line in terms of the way the last couple of weeks have gone for Bosko & Co. OK, so that straight line is almost vertical, but it's nevertheless a straight line from the horrific 18-point loss to TIU to the bizarre but relatively narrow loss to EWU to the nailbiting home win over Oli Naz to tonight's long-distance road win over a ranked Trinity (TX) team that felled the Tigers from the unbeaten ranks.

In light of Carthage's 10-point loss to a rather undistinguished Southwestern team (whose 3-3 record going in included a loss to 2-6 Swarthmore :o), is there anything you wish to recant from last night? ;)

The Carthage Enigmas, I say! ;D

Nope. I'll just point out that what's true one night may no longer be true the next. ;)

(Southwestern was actually 4-3 going into tonight's game, but I certainly agree that it wasn't a 4-3 earned against sterling competition. The teams that the Pirates had beaten prior to tonight sport a combined 9-24 record, while the teams that have beaten the Pirates are a collective 10-14.)

I wonder if Bosko's comments about expecting to succeed against the inferior SCAC ended up on the bulletin board in the Southwestern locker room? It struck me as an unexpectedly impolitic thing to say about a league that includes the team you'll be facing the next night -- in their own gym, no less.

Maybe this is his way of "firing up" his troops??

Should we be surprised that Bosko made comments that could be characterized as being "unexpectedly impolitic"?

Carthage fans---whats your take on this?
