I certainly don't subscribe the concept that the WETN sports broadcasters speak for me.

No. It's fairly clear they speak for Ned Gulbransen. :)

LOL... too funny.

Quote from: tjcummingsfan on February 11, 2008, 04:04:06 PMJoe's still here, he was dressed on the bench Saturday, he just hasn't been shooting well.

Capalbo sprained his knee in the game against Millikin a week ago. In all honesty, though, Ed Whitaker and Clayton Cahill would've probably been taking his minutes away even if he hadn't gotten hurt. The league has caught up to Joe after his tremendous freshman season. He's a good ballhandler, but because he lacks the quickness necessary to be a penetrator he can be guarded tightly without fear that he'll blow by his man and get to the rim. Right now he's strictly a spot-up shooter. He does not have the ability to get his own shot in this league, and he's not tall enough to be able to shoot over people on the perimeter -- nor does he have the uncanny radar of a Ryan Knuppel, a Nate Collord, or a Korey Coon that would allow him to stick a contested 21-footer. The fact that NPU is poor at setting screens puts Capalbo at an even bigger disadvantage.

Joe needs to learn how to shoot off the dribble, or develop a stepback move, or (preferably) both. He's a very hard worker when he's in the game, and from what I'm told his practice habits reflect that as well, so there's a good chance that he can develop these skills. Remember, he's only a sophomore. But until he does expand his arsenal, he's stuck playing in a league in which everyone has learned what to do to shut him down -- and that means that the minutes he used to get will go to a player like Whitaker or Cahill who has the ability to free himself up for an open look.

Wheaton's certainly had some goofball radio announcers over the years that've made games painful to listen to on WETN (anyone remember the Chris Berman wannabe who graced the airwaves with "Joel the Kolmodin Dragon for two!" or "Rebound, Martin 'Chicago' Trimiew!"?), and it would appear from AndOne's comments about the WC @ NPU broadcast that this season's crew falls into the goofball category as well.

Let's not lump them all together, though. I've heard some very professional-sounding WETN broadcasters as well when I've tuned into Wheaton games in past seasons; two of them, Paul Carr and Bryan Holmgren, used to post here on CCIW Chat. In fact, I think that Paul called a better game than most of the pros that I've heard over the years. He was smooth, enthusiastic, didn't try to show off or do too much, and he was easy to follow. Best of all, when he worked games for WETN he constantly gave the score and clock. My most common complaint about listening to radio or web broadcasts of basketball games is that you often have to wait what seems like forever to hear the score and how much time is left if you tune in to a game in progress.

They're not overly goofbally. But they're not Carr or Holmgren.

I thought that "goofball" would be a kinder term to use for them than "smug, self-righteous scolds." My bad. ::)

I don't think either is accurate, based on the couple of games I've watched.

AndOne's account of Saturday's broadcast seems to indicate differently, Pat.

It's all a matter of interpretation.  People can read into comments whatever they want to.  Perhaps the broadcasters were just trying to provide a little humor for their mainly Wheaton audience during a low-scoring game that may not have otherwise been that exciting to listen to.  I sincerely doubt that the comments were any way meant to come off as self-righteous or pretentious, and certainly not as "crusading."  In fact, they might have even been mocking the fact that such a big deal was made out of the North Park fans' behavior during the previous game.

And I assure you, if you are listening to the broadcasters who do most of the games on WETN this year, you will hear the time and score after almost every basket.

Looking at the remainder of the schedule, I cringe looking at EC because they are in danger of falling out of the CCIW Tournament picture.  The inconsistency and (lack of) point guard issues have been slowly devouring the Bluejays and making it difficult for them to win the close games.  They are on a downward momentum spiral which is not where most of us anticipated the team would be this year.
I think EC has to somehow find a way to string it all together these last 4 games, otherwise they will be on the outside looking in.

Hey AO,

was anything said on the air about the "aggressive" arm movements towards some NP fans that some Wheaton fans showed?

Thanks for returning the conversation to basketball.  I wouldn't cringe just yet Jaybird, in spite of the tough schedule a win Wednesday night would put you in pretty good shape, and based on Carthage's recent play I wouldn't be surprised if Elmhurst comes up with the big road win.  Carthage has no answer for the Bluejay bigs and there's no reason to think that Ruch won't be able to dominate the same way Wiele did last Thursday.  My concern for Elmhurst is their defense, because if little Bosko is getting to the line and Bowens and Fendley are getting open looks from outside then you will have a reason to cringe.  In my opinion, whichever team stops the bleeding Wednesday will be fourth team in, although I would agree that Elmhurst needs it more.

Since congrats typically only goes out when someone who wears  Green and White wins the honor...  ::)

Congrats to Andy Wiele from Wheaton on being named the CCIW player of the Week.  So far he is having an outstanding season and is probably the key reason Wheaton is still in contention.  Yes I know Raymond is the star, but everybody knows about him.  Andy has by-in-large been the answer to the huge question regarding Wheaton's inside presence.  Without him Wheaton would become a one-dimensional attack, which is what some other teams are struggling with right now (aka Elmhurst...).

Averaged 19 point and 11.5 rebounds this past week.  Can he maintain that level of play for the remainder of the season?

As to the underlined portion of the above post---------> Ahhhhh, NO!

However, the actual game description was pretty good. They should have just stuck to that rather than delving into commentary on socially acceptable fan attire and behavior.

No sir. I heard nothing about any "arm movements" or anything even remotely close to that type behavior. Please keep in mind that I was switching back and forth between the Wheaton-NPU game and the NCC-Millikin game which was my primary interest that evening.
