In addition to the major blessings of the season, I'm grateful for the good times that watching our teams brings us, and for the great discussions on our board.

Happy holidays to all!

From Cardinal Pride:

"Yes TH we would debate that, because I believe NCC has the advantage in 3 of those 5 match ups out of the starters.  Here's how I see it:

Brown vs Dauksas--even
Hunter/Roy vs Fisher--NCC
Alexander vs Amelianovich--NCC
Patterson vs Jones--NCC
Thomas vs Freeman--IWU"

I'll give you even on the first one.  I believe Brown was also an All-American.  You're forgetting two players in the second match up:  it would be Hunter/Roy vs Fisher/McGraw/Arnold.  Because of the versatility of those three, the match up would probably go IWU's way.  The third I will take exception to.  What year in school was Alonzo in that season?  I know that even at his best, you have to give the nod to Keelan.  Although, this is not an apples to apples comparison as I consider Alonzo and Keelan to be two different type of players.  Bottom line, most would pick Keelan if they had their choice.  I would say that Patterson against Jones (either of them) is a push.  Chris and Cory don't get the pub that the rest do, but can handle their own against anyone.  The fifth goes to IWU.

Another thing about Alexander, who I know and like:  his MOP was also at the expense of an IWU Kuehl and very questionable.  For those posters that were around and can remember it would be interesting to hear who they think should have won the MOP's:

Brown vs Jeff Kuehl
Alexander vs Steve Kuehl.

I was reading an old article about a game early in the '89 - '90 season, I think against Olivet.  Jeff Kuehl had 28 points on 12 of 12 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 from the line.  He also had 15 rebounds.  There would undoubtedly have been several more games like that had he not broken his hand.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

I hear you TH.  However, the only reason I mentioned Hunter/Roy together was because I couldn't remember who started, but I can throw sharp shooter Mike Lantz in that mix as well.  As far as Alexander is concerned, he was a super sophmore on that team and still garnered 1st team all CCIW honors.  He won his MOP in '92 on a team that went 8-8 in the league.  Despite being on an average team, the majority of the coaches believed he was the best/most dominate player that year.  That alone should tell you how good he was.  We are both partial to our schools as we should be.  I love it!!  :)

We'll continue this debate because we haven't discussed which era was better.  :)

Go Cards!!  Happy Holidays everyone!!

Christmas Eve potpourri:

1) Puget Sound forcing 36 TOs against D1 Riverside at their place is amazing. Matt Arnold-welcome back just in time as Q stated.

2) If Munchie Muskeyvalley (Rose Hulman) is not the best name in all of NCAA basketball (all divisions) this year, tell me who it is.

3) I saw the Augie/Lake Forest game Monday. Augie is good on defense and below mediocre on offense. My guess is that Elmhurst and NCC will be battling it out for 2nd and 3rd with Augie and Carthage battling for the remaining conf. tourney slot.

4) Why can't 2006 be the year of the Cat rather than the dog? If it were, I nominate my cat Uncle Remus as #1 in Normal.

5) Can't wait to see the IWU/UPS game on Dec. 29. It will be interesting to see what Scott Trost does in practice to prepare for the psychotic trapping defense UPS uses apparently very effectively. Scott said they double team rebounders-I don't know what that means as I have never heard that before.  But I have full confidence in the 2005/06 IWU team and in Scott's ability to prepare the Titans for this game. My guess is IWU by 13

Why do I have so much negative Karma -14?  Can anyone tell me why that is?

There is a board is Who's the Best? called Best Player Names.  Also, in General Football, there is a board called Interesting Player Names (I don't think ALL of them are fballers).  Some of the names given may give Munchie a run for his money, but he'd have to be up near the top!  Good find - I applaud!

I dunno - I can't recall anything you ever posted that ticked me off! ;)

Have a karma point!

[Of course, now whoever it is that has it in for you will start hitting me too!  Merry Christmas anyway!]

CP, there are two ways to look at the MOP pick between Alonzo and Steve:  would Steve Kuehl have looked better had he been on an average team?  Since Steve played with Brian Martin, Steve Czirjak, John Lipic, etc.; he had to share the wealth - where as Alonzo was the main/only option.

Back to the present, looking forward to the IWU/PS game.

Which would mean Alexander drew all the attention from opposing teams!!!  :)

IWU should win that game against UPS!!

Yup, the 'share the wealth' argument and the 'focus of the defense' argument pretty-much cancel each other out, which makes these sorts of discussions both fascinating and unresolvable!  ANOTHER reason I'm NOT about to get involved!  (Beyond the fact that I have essentially nothing to go by from 1970 to the late 90s except stats, and I don't put much stock in stats - which is actually NOT a strange confession from a stats instructor: I KNOW the ways they can distort the truth!)

The above arguments cannot be resolved statistically, but only by eye-witness accounts, and, since they will disagree, then you have to decide which are most believable!  Carry on, guys!  My HEART of course will be with the Titans, but my MIND will try to stay open! ;) ;D

According to the Rose-Hulman Press Guide, Munchie Muskeyvalley's full name is "Raymond Andrew Muskeyvalley," and he is a Biomedical Engineering major.  No history is provided on the origin of his nickname.  I bet the public address announcer has a lot of fun calling out his name when he hits a three-point shot.

Merry Christmas & Feliz Navidad to all!

Mr. Ypsi

By this point of the evening I give up on bball talk (here, with the youngest at 13, we've kind of given up on Santa Claus illusions - getting them to go to bed at all is a challenge!).

Everyone have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Full-filling Kwanzaa, or whatever lifts your boat! :)  In other words, Happy Holidays, whichever holidays you celebrate!

Which is why Bill O'Reilly's rants about the 'attack on Christmas' are actually O'Reilly's attacks on anyone who isn't a fundamentalist Christian - being polite to non-fundamentalist-Christians is an attack on Christmas?!! ::)  Bill, PLEASE go have a chat with "Miss Manners"!

Bill O'Reilly's presence on national TV (and perhaps even his existence) is an attack on human decency!

Munchie's nickname was given to him by his grandmother.

She said he loved to eat when he was younger.

"Double the rebounder"

Whenever the opposing team gets a defensive rebound, the two closest guys routinely double that rebounder (many times this guy is a big guy, which many times equates to a poor ball-handler) RIGHT AWAY... and they try to force a turnover.

Against UWSP, they tried to do it a few times and actually got a few steals, but Point's big men were good enough ball-handlers (not just Kalsow, Maus as well) that they were able to handle the ball effectively.

I can't wait to see what happens with this game!  I won't be at school so I won't be able to listen to the broadcast, but I'll be interested to hear what happens!

P.S. MERRY CHRISTMAS!  I've gotta get to bed or Santa won't come!
