I am obviously very proud of Uncle Harry and his accomplishments.  Even as a kid, I can always remember that he was fun to be around and would talk to me about sports.

Specifically, there are two things that I have always noticed about him - one on the court and one off the court.  On the court, he is the opposite of Coach Giovanine at Augustana:  he rarely gets animated our out of his seat.  Mind you, he will get up and make points to the refs, etc. - but he never makes a show of it.  Off the court, he loves to talk basketball.  However, when you start talking about him and his team, he manages to magically change the basketball topic.  Example:  this Thanksgiving I started talking to him and asking about his team.  He answered my question and then said, "Sounds like IWU is going to be really good this year.  He has always been about others and not about himself.

From reading the article, it points out that his exercise and other things keep him young.  Another is my Aunt Rose.  She is a pistol!  When we went to watch them play in Springfield a couple years ago, she managed to keep Titan Q in line - which is not easily done.

I hope he gets things turned around this year and continues coaching.  Getting to 1000 wins would be quite an accomplishment.

Question for Pat Coleman, or anyone else who has carefully read the 2005-06 Division III Manual...

Should a sectional hosting decision come down to Illinois Wesleyan and Puget Sound - let's say the top two seeds left of the 4 sectional participants - could the head-to-head game Thursday @ Westmont factor into that decision?

Pat Coleman

Possibly, but I think the fact that the west hosted the last three years will come into play before that. So will geographic proximity.

Since both gyms have sufficient seating, I doubt any of the written criteria will particularly come into play.

Gee, I'd love to be posting about Wheaton's west coast trip, but the Westmont Tourney is leagues better in competition and will be supplying Wesleyan with yet another strong opponent in their pre-CCIW schedule.  Have you looked at the teams Wheaton is playing?  Obviously, the Thunder aren't their normal selves this year, but these opponents just aren't that good.

At least I can say that the Westmont AD is a Wheaton grad!  And by the way Ypsi, don't get all upset that Wesleyan is a travelling to a "conservative" Christian school to play a tourney where a few Merry Christmas greetings may have been uttered.  ;)

Jim, let me ask you my now-scrolled-off question:

Does anyone know who the fourth team in the Whittier College Purple & Gold Poet Classic is?  Wheaton is playing LaSierra and the host Poets, but neither of these school's websites provides the identity of their other opponent, and neither do the schedules loaded into D3hoops.com.  (In fact, Whittier has just uploaded "Poet Classic" on their schedule here for both days.)

Yes, Whittier is not good and LaSierra is worse (and if the fourth is a local Bible college, they're likely worse still), but hey! April and I will take whatever games we can find out here.  It'd be nice to know who's playing before we show up, however.   :)

The 4th participant is indeed West Coast Baptist College.  While this college does have a worthy mission, it's athletic department can't even get it's own web page.  I can only assume that the team is not overly competitive.

If I had to guess, I'd say West Coast Baptist.

Unfortunately, this means some SCIAC schools are sadly predictable. :-\ Luckily, Wheaton doesn't have to play WCBC.

IWU 70, Mr. Ypsi. et al--
A few points concerning the recent discussion on point guards--
There's a good reason Steve Laub's assist totals aren't to be found.  We didn't keep them then but he would have had plenty. ...   The arrival of Brad Gregurich in 1979 ... I believe Gregurich's assist totals would be considerably higher under current conditions.  We didn't dish them out as freely then as I believe they do now.
Also you may need to factor in:

  • The men's game added the three-point line in 1986-87
  • The shot clock was first introduced in NCAA men's basketball during the 1985-86 season; and, several rules variations on the shot clock have occurred over the subsequent years.

So. when you look at Gramkow, Laub or Gregurich it would would be a more level evaluation if you factored an assumption for 3 point production.  For example, Tom Gramkow would have had his fair share (so would Sheldon Thompson for that matter).
I would also agree with Correctingtitan -- a player had to really and clearly "earn" an assist in the early tracking of assist stats.

Then add to your mix at least one more "point guard candidate" #43 on the All Time IWU Scorer's list -- Dennie Bridges            926      1957-61

Hey Augiefan, it's been awhile. I've lurked and kept up with the comings and goings. I love this board because of that. You guys are amazing with your basketball knowledge. Steve got back from Iraq safely and we moved to Germany shortly there after. We are stationed in Heidelberg. It's a beautiful city, if anyone would like to check it out, we have a guest room. Steve narrowly missed being shipped back to Iraq again, every day is an adventure.

Have a good trip Augiefan, hope your Christmas was good and hope all will go well with your New Year. Hopefully, someone will keep us updated on those scores. I'll keep an eye on the board.

Augie as expected beat Marian (WI) very easily. The final was 88-52 with virtually everyone who was healthy getting playing time. Nate Swetalla leading all scorers with 20. McAdams Thornton and Pat Brusveen followed with 12 each. Harrigan had an off night with only 10 points, and he was matched by Mike Kolze with 10. Dain Swetalla got some playing time (4 pts.), and it was good to hear he's back.

Tomorrow will be Augie's first big challenge of the year. Go Augie !!!

Elmhurst slaughtered UW Superior 76-49 this evening.

NCC beats Franklin 73-61 to remain unbeaten. A sweep for the CCIW this evening. There's going to be a heckuva a battle for 2nd place in the CCIW this year.

Titan Q

Nice win for NCC.  If you want to see something impressive, check out NCC's season offensive stats (FG %, A:TO, etc).  The numbers look exactly like Nebraska Wesleyan's used to.

The CCIW gets the 1st in the 4 biggies this week.  Three more tomorrow...

* IWU vs Puget Sound (@ Westmont)

* Augustana @ UW-Stout

* Elmhurst @ Albion

Let's get 'em all.

Q, have a great time out there.  The Santa Barbara area is one of the most beautiful in the US.  I spent some time on the UC Santa Barbara campus as that is where the UC system study abroad offices are located.  Hope the Titans can bring home two Ws from this trip.  I suppose you saw that DIII CMU beat DI Princeton.  Princeton is having one nightmarish season and can't seem to put much up offensively at all.  Strange.  Another good feather in the cap of DIII basketball.   Sunny and warm in Hong Kong today -- and our campus here is very quiet with the New Year break upcoming.  Happy New Year to all CCIW board chatsters and lurkers.

Good win for the Cards tonight.  It shows NCC can go on the road versus a quality opponent and get it done.  This should do wonders for their confidence heading into league play.  From what I understand the final score doesn't indicate how dominate NCC really was tonight.  I was told they were up by as many as 20-25pts. with about 6 min. left before the JV/freshman came into game.  I couldn't find a boxscore but here's a write-up from franklin's website:

What's interesting is the article doesn't mention anything about Franklin's all-american & HCAC player of the year candidate Nick Kane.  He's averaging 22pts and 9 boards a game.
