Augie wins 56-55 after trailing by 9 with 2:55 to go. Matt Pelton was huge in the comeback.

Livestats has been frozen on 00:01 for a long time - I'm gonna assume Wheaton won 74-70.

For the long haul, I like IWU's balance (5 players with 11 or more points), but Raymond's 38 got the job done tonight.  Congratulations - but we'll see you again at the Shirk! :D  (Alas, by then you will surely have Wiele back. :()

Wooooooooo!  :D Is that what a near death experience feels like??  :-X

Dear Andy Wiele,

Please hurry up and heal in a very safe, permenant and yet magically fast manner.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

April

Tonight's winners are Augie, Carthage, NCC and Wheaton. Kent Raymond certified his All American status once again with 38 points against an inspired Titan team. What a start to the conference season.

Viking Blue

As I read the reactions from this, the first game for 6 of the 8 CCIW teams, and notice the amazing amount of discussion that goes into the following of our teams, I can't help but think how cool it would have been to have been around (and be able to discuss) back-to-back-to back (and then back-to-back again) championships by North Park in the '70s and '80s.

Following as much as I could tonight via live stats, it appeared as though Phil Schniedermeier had another solid game for North Park, which is very good news.

On the down side, yet another game where very little seemed to come from Roshawn Russell.  Such is the price that is paid for following a freshman, I guess!

Congrats to all of tonight's winners.

Yes, but we'll have Wiele by then...hopefully. And you did have Johnson for this game.. and still lost.. without a full home crowd for Wheaton.
At the very least, we won't go 0-3 vs. IWU again.

It was nice to be able to watch the game online (via WETN).  That was a great game.

Just too much Kent Raymond for the Titans in the end.  It looked like the Titans actually did a good job defending him, and made him work, but he just made big shot after big shot in the final few minutes with guys draped all over him.  One of the big stretches in the game was the end of the 1st half when Sean Dwyer left with his second foul with 4-5 minutes to play.  Raymond really had not done much damage at that point, but with Dwyer sidelined he went on a big flurry to close out the half and erase the IWU lead.

IWU really hurt itself with turnovers in the 1st half.  The Titans finished with 17 turnovers, and I think 10 or 11 were in the 1st.  That big lead they had early the game (13 I think) could have been quite a bit more, but the Titans were just a little sloppy with the ball there for a while.

The Titans rebounded very well.  Without Wiele, Wheaton is not a big team and IWU finished with a rebounding margin of 12.

As usual, IWU got a team effort offensively -  Sexauer 15, Johnson 13, Rosenkranz 12, O'Callaghan 11, Chamernik 11.  Very nice offensive depth and balance for IWU.  Edmond O'Callaghan really had a nice game off the bench with 11 pts (5-6 FG) and 8 rebounds.

The last 3 Augie-Elmhurst games at Carver Fieldhouse in Rock Island have been decided by a total of 4 points. Augie was fortunate enough to win all 3 against a great Elmhurst team.

Carthage was led by Steve D with 32 points and Sean Fendley with 16 tonight.

For the record, note that I added the return of Wiele 5 minutes before your post. :D

I ain't countin' no chickens!

How bout Augie grinding out yet another big CCIW win.  I had the live stats up while watching IWU/Wheaton and just had a feeling they weren't quite done down 9 late.

I'm not sure what happened at Carver down the stretch, but I saw a couple turnovers by Elmhurst's guards in the final minute.

I know it's just Week 1, but I really think the league comes down to Augie and Wheaton, and Augie is just so good at grinding out wins...but Wheaton has Kent Raymond.

Play-by-play indicates Augie put the lid down on Elmhurst bucket; and, then went on a 10-0 run to win with Matt Pelton greatly contributing 5 of those points including the FTs to tie and win.

Raymond's ability to beat a team with the clock off is impressive.  He certainly did it again tonight and made some terrific, timely shots.

NCC 81, NPU 66

Phil Schniedermeier, 14 pts
Roshawn Russell, 13 pts
Nick Williams, 8 pts, 10 rebs

42% FG, 31% 3FG, 70% FT

Chris Drennan, 18 pts, 7 rebs
Matt Rogers, 16 pts, 6 rebs
Reid Barringer, 14 pts

47% FG, 39% 3FG, 83% FT

NCC outrebounded NPU, 40-31 -- a very big stat, and a troubling one for NPU when you consider that the smallish Cardinals had been outrebounded by an average of 2 rpg prior to tonight -- and had five fewer turnovers than did the Park.

I wasn't at the game -- I was pulling scorebook duty for the NPU women tonight -- but it appears that the youth vs. experience matchup favored big for the older Cardinals. Every run NPU had in this game was matched by a counterattack from NCC; the Vikings would cut the lead to four, or to seven, and then the Cards would answer right back. And down the stretch the Cards made all of their FTs and put the game away.

At least Kendall Greer made his season debut for North Park a game earlier than the doctor was previously going to allow -- Greer did play tonight, didn't he? His number is correct in the box score.

Now the Vikings get three days to think about playing #1 Wheaton with absolutely no fan support in the crackerbox. Time to get out the slingshot and pluck a handful of small, smooth stones from the bed of the North Branch.

Since everyone will find out in about an hour anyway, I'll clear this up, well...at least partially, Nick will be playing tonight in Naperville. Good news for viking fans.

Thanks Rob.
Heading down there now.
Any info about why he has missed the last couple games?

Yes. And it's staying off of the board.
