Raymond just broke 2000 pts for the year. He will move into second on Wheaton's all time list in the next game or two.

If Wheaton makes a nice playoff run, and Raymond averages 30ppg, he could break the current Wheaton all time points record of 2542.

Wow!

30ppg for 18 more games takes you to a 32 game season, or 28 ppg for 19 more games.  (It is a 2-game CCIW post-season tourney isn't it?)

That 2000 point plateau puts one in elite territory.  A listing of the all-time small college scoring leaders in Illinois...

Problem is... Raymond got hurt tonight.  Looks relatively serious.

Wheaton's top two all-time scorers, Marv Johnson and Mel Peterson (a Covie, by the way from the UP), both played in the fifties.  Johnson started his career in the late fourties.

Kudos to the WETN radio play-by-play guys for an excellent job.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Wheaton wins 79-71, after halftime tie at 33.

Raymond comes out with 14 pts in first 3 minutes of 2nd half to go on 16-4 run.  Raymond has 19 points in the 2nd half, but goes out of the game with over 6 minutes left in the game.  I believe he rolled an ankle on a drive to the hoop for 2pts.

It looks relatively serious as he was carried off the court into the locker room and he wasn't putting any weight on his right leg.

Wiele play a huge roll in the win.  Nearly a double, double. 14pts and 9 rebs in 17 minutes.

Raymond's left ankle injury definitely looked bad.  He returned to the bench on crutches.

Good news.  It didn't look good at first.

Bill Harris just said on the postgame show that he is on crutches?

This was teach-the-starters-a-lesson night for Paul Brenegan. NPU played atrociously in the first half, giving up 8-0 and 19-4 runs, as an obviously charged-up Elmhurst squad ran out to a 51-25 lead at the break. After five more minutes of getting no production out of three of his four main players, Brenegan benched Nick Williams, Clayton Cahill, and Phil Schniedermeier (combined 5-14 on the night for 10 pts and 8 rebs), and if the PBP is accurate it appears that he never brought them back in over the remaining 15 minutes. Instead, sparingly-used freshmen Joel Benson and DJ Cooper, along with Ryan Beigie (who had been relegated to the bench over the past few games) and sophomore Kendall Greer, played the bulk of the second half alongside Ro Russell.

While Elmhurst was probably somewhat into coasting mode throughout the second stanza, the North Park kiddie corps at least managed to trade baskets with the Bluejays for the next ten minutes. With about five minutes left and EC still up in the 20-23 range, NPU made a run. It was too little, too late, as the Vikings couldn't get the lead below 11 in the waning minutes, but it was nevertheless a pretty impressive display by a group that I figured would be in over their heads against Burks, Ruch & Co.

The two stars for the Bluejays really came through for them tonight and took over a game that EC absolutely had to win. It also appears that Chris Childs had a pretty good game as well, and the oft-maligned EC backcourt has to get some credit for taking care of the ball so well. Elmhurst had 19 assists for the night and only 4 turnovers, and that's just plain ol' good guard play.

It's hard to know what to think of this game as a North Park fan. On the one hand, three of the players whom the team is counting upon really didn't show up tonight. On the other hand, several players who really hadn't had much of a chance to shine came off of the bench and stepped up late.

Regardless I'd say he most likely will not play on Saturday.  Next week could be questionable based on the seriousness of the injury.  They'll know more tomorrow when they see the swelling.

In my mind Wheaton solidified their claim as the no. 1 team in the country tonight with an impressive team victory against a very good Augustana team. And if Kent Raymond is not the best player in D3, I would love to watch play whoever is better. He had 26 points, 14 of which came in the first 7 or so minutes of the second half. It was an impressive display of offensive ability. Wheaton's 16-4 run to start the second half really put the game away, although Augustana fought back hard, and got within five after Raymond left the game.

Obviously, the question of the night is whether or not Raymond is ok. He came out of the locker room on crutches with ice on his ankle, which is a bit more encouraging than what initially looked like a knee injury. The way he looked, he probably wont play on Saturday.

How about Andy Wiele. 14 points and 9 boards, he gave the Thunder a huge lift under the basket, particularly in the second half.

I think what eventually hurt Augustana was not having an established go-to guy to take charge down the stretch. When Wheaton started their run, no one stepped up for Augustana.

A very impressive team victory for Wheaton tonight. Congrats Thunder!
