Quote from: 79jaybird on January 30, 2009, 02:36:55 PMDon't want to count chickens before they hatch, however if Elmhurst is able to defeat IWU that would be a 4-game winning streak against IWU which would (I believe) be a first.

This would just be 2, jaybird.  IWU somehow missed 20 FT's and won by 4 last February in Bloomington...

Just did a little research and found that the Bluejays have a 5-2 edge in the series since the 2005-2006 season.  Both Titan wins came at the Shirk Center in 2006 & 2008.
And just a little more research would reveal an all time record by IWU over Elmhurst of 93 - 20

No doubt, the Titans have totally dominated the series with Elmhurst.  I remember going to Fred Young Fieldhouse my junior year to broadcast an ELM-IWU game for WRSE-FM.  I think the series record was 64-8 at that time.  Until the early 1990's in the Jim Whitesell era, Elmhurst wins over the Titans were extremely rare.

A couple of points on the Thunder:

NCC dominated the game Wednesday with the players on the court. No debate there. All the what ifs are just that, speculation. The Thunder were soundly beaten that night and no amount of debate will change that fact.

Wiele and Raymond have been on the floor together for a total of 37 minutes this conference season. Never at full strength. Wheaton has not had their best team at full strength on the floor since the 7th game of the season. In the first 7 games they beat their opponents an average of 81-58.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what Raymond has/hasn't done vs NCC so far in his career. He clearly has a much better supporting cast this year than ever before with McCrary, Plederer and the experience of his other team mates. When healthy he is putting up the best numbers of his career while playing less minutes and so are his team mates. The good news is we will hopefully get to see both Wheaton and NCC at full strength at the end of the season with a lot to play for.

If Wheaton can get healthy and get back into a rythm with their best team, they will be poised to make a run down the stretch of a very difficult schedule in a brutally tough conference. They will need every person at their best to succeed in these circumstances.

I have NO clue what you were trying to say in the bolded line - please explain.

[And I suspect Augie and EC fans may be a bit ticked as well! ;D]

Late Night,
What do you mean WC short handed?Who were they missing? Kent Raymond playing 20 mins isn't short-handed, him not playing at all is short-handed.
I'd really like to agree with you,but then we both would be wrong........

Viking Mike

Looking forward to another Saturday night of CCIW basketball!

It appears if Bertrand plays tonight against the Thunder, it will be very limited at best.
Giovannine says he won't be a factor.  Hopefully Kyle Nelson can continue to play strong.
I'm thinking we will see a strong effort tonight out of Wheaton with a healthier Raymond and a determined Wiele, esp after their frustrating loss in Naperville on Wed.   I hope Augie is up to the challenge.  Wheaton certainly played like a No 1 team in our first match up at King Arena.  There defense was exceptional.  The Vikings will need to play great defense and hit for a good percentage.  Rebounding is also going to be key as the Vikes were out-rebounded in Wheaton in the first game.  The Carver Center should be rocking tonight!!!

This would be a huge win for Augustana in their quest for No. 4

Go Augustana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Titan Q

Anyone know when the last time Wheaton won @ Augustana was?  I can only find results back to 2000 online.  (Wheaton's site has year-by-year results, but does not indicate which games were home vs away.)

2008 - Augie 66 Wheaton 61
2007 - Augie 63 Wheaton 60
2006 - Augie 64 Wheaton 61
2005 - Augie 83 Wheaton 76
2004 - Augie 83 Wheaton 77
2003 - Augie 96 Wheaton 81
2002 - Augie 85 Wheaton 71
2001 - Augie 89 Wheaton 88 (OT)
2000 - Augie 78 Wheaton 69

Titan Q

And speaking of homecourt advantage, Elmhurst's R.A. Faganel Hall has been rough on Illinois Wesleyan...including some outstanding Titan teams.

1996 - Elmhurst 86 IWU 72 (IWU Final Four team)
1997 - IWU 80 Elmhurst 71
1998 - IWU 87 Elmhurst 84,
1999 - Elmhurst 75 IWU 63
2000 - IWU 84 Elmhurst 78
2001 - Elmhurst 89 IWU 87 (IWU Final Four team)
2002 - Elmhurst 71 IWU 61
2003 - Elmhurst 74 IWU 72 (IWU CCIW title team)
2004 - IWU 62 Elmhurst 55
2005 - IWU 75 Elmhurst 59
2006 - Elmhurst 72 IWU 64 (IWU Final Four team)
2007 - Elmhurst 76 IWU 57
2008 - Elmhurst 90 IWU 77

I was at every game above from 1999 on (that was the game where the EC campus lost power with 15:00 to go in the game and IWU had to travel back up a few weeks later to complete the game).  From Ryan Knuppel to Chris Martin to Ryan Burks and Brent Ruch, the Titans have been on the bad end of some tremendous individual Elmhurst performances.  I remember Knuppel hitting a 25 foot 3 with the shot clock winding down from the left wing in the final minute of the '01 game, and I remember Chris Martin hitting a shot from the same exact spot in a huge moment late in the '06 game.

I just don't have a lot of fond memories of driving home from Elmhurst.

When your best player (or in this case, the best player in the league), plays 20 minutes as opposed to his usual 35-40 minutes, is coming off a 2 week layoff at less than 100%, do YOU think that team is playing at full strength?  IMHO, I don't.

Late nite,
Short handed is having players UNAVAILABLE,example North Park played a couple games short handed due to player problems on or off the court making them UNAVAILABLE for the game. Kent Raymond was AVAILABLE for limited playing time from what I read, playing more than planned by the coaches. IMHO I am glad he played a limited time because I would hate to see him push it too hard and take the chance of further damage or something more serious.
I'd really like to agree with you,but then we both would be wrong........

"A couple"? Guess again. ;)

NPU has had the quintet of Russell, Cahill, Greer, Willliams, and Schniedermeier intact and available for a grand total of three games this season.

Okay---Raymond was NOT AVAILABLE for his NORMAL 35-40 minutes---Therefore, they were short-handed---This discussion is getting stupid
