There are a lot of things wrong with Rock Island, but I don't think the "medical" school at Augustana has the cure for any of them.   ;D

dgp (aka the king)

I'd like to add my belated congratulations to North Park senior Mike Ventura as well - my son and I were on hand Saturday night as NPU honored its lone senior.  Credit where credit is due to a student-athlete, who will graduate on time, with a major in biology - that stuck through four years of basketball games and practices, where he was never a star and only rarely a starter.  Thanks Mike and good luck.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

I also think Wheaton and Elmhurst are locks.  But what if Elmhurst losses Friday night and Augustana or North Central win the CCIW tourney?
If a bunch of conference tourney upsets occur throughout the nation, could Elmhurst possibly be left out?

I've seen Elmhurst no more than a win or two short the past four years.  I'm still nervous as a Bluejay fan.

2005  18-7  10-4   tied for 2nd with WHE at 10-4  IWU was 12-2
2006  17-9   9-5    3 way tie with IWU & NCC for 2nd at 9-5    AUG was 11-3
2007  21-6  10-4   2nd place at 10-4   AUG was 11-3
2008  18-8   8-6    4th place at 8-6, IWU & WHE 9-5, AUG 11-3

I'll admit that 2006 & 2008 were longshots but they really got hosed in 2007.

The Bluejays have a 47-23 CCIW record over the past five seasons.  I hope they get a least one bid to the D3 tourney in that span.

I am certain this year's Jays are much more highly rated in region than they were in 2007.  I don't quite remember or want to research their in region standing in 2007, but I'm sure  they had a couple of wins out of region and that cost them come selection time.

That being said, I am not wanting to leave it to the committee!  At the very least, I think Elmhurst needs to win their game versus Augie and hope they get Wheaton in the final.  That way, a win will earn them the automatic bid, and a loss would still see them with the best status as a CCIW Pool C contender.

We thought that would be enough in 2007 and it wasn't.  I think this year, it may finally be enough.

Scarlata has yet to decide where he will attend college but has narrowed it to four schools--Loyola, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan.

"I have Division I offers, but I might take the Division III route strictly for academics," Scarlata said. "I want to study business or medicine and Augustana has a great medical school. ."

I'd like to hear more about Augustana's "great medical school".

It's awesome...Marcus Welby and Gregory House went there.  ;)

Wow, rough crowd...bangin' on an 18-year old kid for a little mis-statement...of course I won't be as quick to defend him if he ends up at Wesleyan.  :D

In fact, as I think back on this, I thought I heard something about him and the Ivy League.  Am I making that up, was that on this board, or did I hear it somewhere else?

I saw him mentioned several times on a Cornell recruiting blog and some other mentions of him in conection with Ivy and Patriot League schools.

High above Cayuga's waters is certainly a much better view than you get of the Mississippi from the crest of 36th in Rock Island.

Dan, I definitely wasn't bangin' on him.  I was just laughing after reading Pete's email and thought I'd 'pile on'.  I assumed he meant "Pre-Med".

After seeing Jake Carwell  have limited playing time in the previous 2 games ( 16 minutes at Ill Wes and 19 minutes at Carth) due to foul trouble, it was good to see him get 34 minutes against NC.

It seems to me that Raymond's conditioning still isn't totally back.  Until his injury I can't remember him ever asking out of a game.  I saw him ask for a break at least 3 times on Sat.

I have to agree with Sager here.  It only takes 2 weeks or so when you are practicing everyday to get back into game shape.  Guarding the post is a lot different in many aspects then guarding the perimeter, and stamina being one of those things.  You really have no idea how much it tires you out,  especially your upper body untill  you have done it against a decent post player.  Maybe this means Raymond does have a flaw!  His post defense stamina!  There is a GOD!

Pre-med - at whatever school - is a tough road ahead (and beyond).  Even completing the course of college study is no guarantee of admission to medical school, where the graduate exam is given a heavy weight towards admission.  My niece is a first-year med student at Florida, after completing her undergraduate at Florida Atlantic.

My son told me of a friend at North Park, who is completing all the pre-med course work at North Park, but is majoring in music performance.  That's double the fun.

One year at North Park we had seven football players majoring in pre-med.  We also had a 23-game losing streak.  I got a picture of them in lab coats and stethoscopies listening to the football.  Associate Press ran the picture nationwide with the caption "Doctoring the Ball" right before our Homecoming Game in 1985.  One of the pre-med majors, Scott Love, caught the winning touchdown in the final minute for the victory over IWU.

Illinois Wesleyan has been chosen as the host for the 2010 and 2011 Division III Women's Final Four...

This year it is at Hope again.

Titan Q

I can't confirm any of this, but what I have heard coming from the recent CCIW A.D.'s meeting...

1) All CCIW conference tournaments will remain in effect next year.

2) Starting next season, there will be women's/men's double-headers every Saturday night.  (I guess that means men's JV games only on Wednesdays.)

3) There is still discussion of adding a school to the league, but it does not sound likely to happen - I believe it is Carroll.

Naperick

New D3 poll is out.

Wheaton leaps 3 spots to #4.
Elmhurst up 1 to #20.
Augustana is 26th.

CCIWfan,
Depending on what type of injury you have depends where you are for recovery time , I know one player who is just getting stronger after being hurt in Oct. You can't make general statements
I'd really like to agree with you,but then we both would be wrong........

I have read about Brett's commitments to both academics and basketball and find them commendable.  When Bob mentioned Brett's commitment to studying his oversized Biology textbook on game day, I was impressed.  It's another great illustration of how D3 offers us a great view on true student-athletes.  What I don't see is the "undersized" part.  I see Brett listed at 6'5" and a solid 225 lbs.  That gives him the same height and a 5 to 10 pound advantage over Drennan and Rogers with North Central.  For Carthage, Tolo is listed at 6'6", 190 and Williams at 6'6", and a seemingly generous 202.  Down at Millikin, Demby checks in at 6'7" with no weight listed, but I'd guess he's not as heavy as Brett Chamernik.  If you mean that he's smaller than Ruch and Wiele, OK.  But so is the rest of the conference.

I am referring to height, Pete.  Here are the CCIW's starting 5's...

Brent Ruch (EC), 6-9 Sr.
Andy Wiele (WC), 6-8 Sr.
Phil Schniedermeier (NPU), 6-7 So.
Joscar Demby (MU), 6-7 Jr.
Chandlor Collins (AC), 6-7 Sr.
Richard Williams (CC), 6-6 Jr.
Chris Drennan (NCC), 6-5 Sr.
Brett Chamernik (IWU), 6-5 Sr.

I'd call both Drennan and Chamernik "undersized" for centers in the CCIW.  Brett certainly has a very muscular frame, but he does not have Drennan's offensive polish in the low post, so his lack of height gets exploited more.  He also wasn't blessed with great leaping ability, so he can't get away with being shorter than his counterparts like Darius Gant (6-4) could.

I can see where Brett would have been a great high school center, because he was probably at least as tall as the opponent's center most nights, and I'm sure he was stronger than most (Chamernik was a football player at Benet as well).  I think he averaged like 18 & 10 as a senior, and he was an All-East Suburban Catholic player...

http://www.eastsuburbancc.com/ESCC_mbkb_all_con_04-05.pdf

In high school at Benet, Chamernik played primarily at at wing forward position. He was probably 15-20 pounds less than he is now. About half of his points came on threes and long 2s. Most of the remainder resulted from drives inside where he was able to finish or got fouled and sank his FTs. He made very few mid-range shots, at least in the games I saw him play.

MilkMan25

I wasnt talking about recovery time for his injury, I was just talking about getting back into shape so that he wouldnt die after running up and down the floor a couple times.

Elmhurst 76, Carthage 53

Wheaton 70, North Central 60

Todd Raridon's voodoo doll finally ran out of juju tonight. The Cards held Wheaton to only 1-11 from downtown, but it didn't matter. Kent Raymond probably eliminated whatever doubt still existed that he was going to become the third triple-MOP-winner in CCIW history by scoring 29 points (in spite of the fact that he hit only one trey and only went to the FT line four times), and NCC star Chris Drennan was held to only six points. The big mystery to me is how the heck Jake Carwell managed to go to the line 11 times. I noticed that Dominique King didn't play for the third straight game for NCC; freshman Mark Adams seems to have taken all of his minutes.

Unfortunately,
Dominique King suffered a season ending knee injury against IWU!  He was sorely missed versus IWU (Sean Johnson -18pts), Elmhurst (Burks-28pts), and Wheaton (Raymond - 29pts)!  All Losses! He would have been the second defender against all three players and primary defender once he entered the game!  His injury has set the Cardinals back some because he is one of the best defensive players on the team!

Greg, sorry about my misinterpretation of "NCC Backing into the tournament"!  It was clearly a reactionary response!  I Should not have taken it personally!
CARDINAL PRIDE STARTS WITH ME!
