I don't know if any CCIW schools were after Jordan Schmidt of Glenbrook North, but I had a good laugh at this headline from ChicagoHoops.com:

"Class Of 2009 Glenbrook North Star Jordan Schmidt To Play His College Basketball For Minnesota-Based Division III Heavyweight Hamlin University"

http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/jschmidt.html

I could overlook the missing "e" on the end of Hamline, but Division III heavyweight? Hamline has a cumulative winning percentage of .304 over the last decade.

This is in no way meant to be a criticism of Schmidt or even Hamline, but of whoever wrote this headline/story.

I appreciate any D3 recruiting news we can get, but c'mon man, do a little research.

I know just about every CCIW team was on this guy...

I can name one, and probably two, that weren't.

That's a good one, but although I agree that it shows slipshod research (OK, no research whatsoever :D) I'll cut the writer an ever-so-slight bit of slack for the fact that Hamline's an out-of-state school. I still think that the local recruiting website booby prize goes to the guy who thought that Judson was a D3 school.

Mike Schauer is the new Wheaton coach.

I emailed the guy and his response was pretty disturbing, basically saying it was OK to lie if it meant being positive.

No surprise here. I was pretty sure from the beginning of this process that he would be the new coach, and he emerged from a very intriguing "Final Four." Coach Schauer was very successful at Gordon and I hope he is able to continue Wheaton's success. The Wheaton job I think will present more challenges for Schauer, though he did build Gordon's program from the ground up. I think there will be more pressure on him to succeed at Wheaton than he has had in the past.

He inherits a strong team though, so his first season should go well. He has veterans returning in Panner, Carwell, and Jahns plus two rising stars in McCrary and Pflederer. He will meet with the team on Monday to get things rolling.

Here's the link to Coach Schauer's bio on the Gordon site: http://www.gordon.edu/athletics/coaches.cfm?iSeasonID=204&iStaffID=35&strView=Bio

Thank you, thank you, one and all, for your congratulations on my brilliant prediction of Wheaton's coaching hire. Applause is unnecessary. Just throw money -- tens and twenties will suffice.

Wheaton got a good man. Congrats to Mike on garnering what I'm pretty sure he views as his dream job. And best of luck to him, except for two nights a year in which I hope he gets his brains beaten in by the royal blue and gold. ;)

The take on this hire that I really want to read -- and I'm sure that a lot of others would like to read it as well -- is Joe Hakes's.

Yeah, the author has been waiting to use that alliteration for several seasons now.  He must have thought this might be the best chance.   :D

1- maybe the writer is a Hamline alum

2- maybe he remembered the Hamline beat Millikin in 1951 for the NAIA national title.

3- or maybe the headline writer has a mancrush on Harry Hamlin, he of "Clash of the Titans" fame.

I think that Coach Schauer iis an excellent hire for Wheaton. It's always good to see a school hire a capable and talented alum to a coaching position. I think it is also important at Wheaton to have a coach who understands the Christian values that are so important to the academic and social culture at Wheaton College.

I wish Coach Schauer success, except when the Thunder face the Augie Vikings.

Sounds like Wheaton got a really good coach in Schauer. It will be weird not to see Bill Harris patrolling the sidelines at King Arena next year, and KRay and Weile on the court, but Wheaton is still going to be a ton. Panner and Carwell will be 2 of the better players in the CCIW next season, and I think they have to be one of the favorites to win the league again. Big shoes to fill for Schauer but all the talent he is inheriting will certainly help.
