The IWU gift, $25 million, from the Ames family is truly tremendous.  Also, several other major gifts announced as part of the $73 million pledged already toward a $125 million goal.  One of the pledged gifts is an gift to support/maintain The Shirk Center for the Shirk family.  IWU is so blessed.  Hope all the Titans out there continue to support  . . . esp. this important, major campaign.  My hat is off to President Wilson and his development team.

Q (or anyone who knows),

Any word on who plays who in the two tourneys?  And are they both actual tourneys, or 'classics'?

Would be interesting to hear how J&W ended up in the tourney  -  I mean, a .500 team from a bottom of the barrel conference  --why not bring in a solid fourth and have a Great tourney?  There must have been some sort of connection.....

Pure desperation.  Another school cancelled and Ron Rose was left looking for a 4th for almost 2 months...just like Mark Edwards was left scrambling when Middlebury bailed out of the Lopata last year.  Fortunately, J&W responded to Rose's D3hoops.com "open dates" post:

Wash U had to go with a 3-team tournament last year, which was unfortunate.

Well it should be a heck of a D3 experience for a bunch of kids who likely have never experienced midwest D3 basketball....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Trinity TX and Southwestern co-host that tournament down in Texas every year. It's thus a classic format, since the Tigers and Pirates are both SCAC squads and do not play each other in non-conference games. As far as I know, Hope and Calvin are the only two teams in D3 that play each other in non-conference games, since that annual early-season tourney in Grand Rapids in which they play is a traditional-format bracket rather than a classic.

Of course, the W-A-W teams in the NESCAC (Wesleyan, Amherst, and Williams) play each other in what they consider to be non-conference games, but since the NESCAC is only a single round-robin league, it's not really the same thing.

As Greg said, the Trinity tournament is a "classic."  I'm guessing IWU will play both Trinity and Southwestern.  As for the tournament IWU is hosting, I'm pretty sure that is winners vs winners.  Almost positive that will go...

IWU vs Johnson & Wales
Wash U vs Ohio Wesleyan

IWU is guaranteed to play 9 of its 11 non-conference games "in-region", but it will most likely end up 10 of 11 (assuming IWU and Wash U play).  Trinity (Tx) and Southwestern are both "in-region" games.  That is the positive...the negative is that this is the weakest schedule I've ever seen Illinois Wesleyan play by far.  The Titans are usually much more tested heading into CCIW play than they'll be in 2009-10.

2008-09 All-Sports trophy:

While Wheaton is the repeat winner, this year is even closer than last.  And IWU repeats as the school with the most titles.

[For sports with all 8 teams participating, 1st place gets 8, 2nd 7, etc.  In case of ties, points are averaged among the tied teams.  In sports with fewer than 8 teams, 1st receives the number of teams participating, on down to 0 points for non-participants.]

Wheaton  117 (5 titles)
Carthage  114.5 (4)
IWU   113 (7)
NCC   104.5 (5)
Augie   91 (0)
Elmhurst  58.5 (0)
Millikin   49.5 (0)
NPU    29 (0)

[2007-08:
Wheaton  117.5 (5)
IWU    111.5 (7)
Carthage  110 (3)
Augie    103 (3)
NCC     92.5 (4)
Elmhurst  60.5 (0)
Millikin   53.5 (0)
NPU    25.5 (0)]

Sometime soon I will present data by season, by gender, and for only the 16 (of 21) sports with full 8-school participation.

Well, happy IWU got a 4th team to fill out the tournament as a 3 team tournament just awkward.  J&W's Providence campus more noted for its culinary school - one of the best in the nation which includes hotel management too.  As a 'side' note, if posters are ever in the Providence area a dining visit worth the trip - 5 star meal and service at very reasonable prices.  Hum, maybe the team has a traveling chef?

Only if they move their pivot foot.

They could get Rob Berki to teach them.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Hello everyone, I am a long time reader, first time poster.
I was just curios when the rest of the CCIW will be releasing there full schedules for next year. It doesnt look like Augi, Elm, or Carthage have theirs up yet. Looking at the CCIW schedule, why are there so many games at peculiar times this year. some 4:00, 4:30 and 5:00 starts? why the change?

Without knowing which specific games you're talking about, my guess is that those starting times have something to do with the new CCIW plan to have women's/men's double-headers on Saturdays. I'm not sure why that would necessarily affect the starting times, but that would be my guess.

There's been some dicussion of this topic on the WBB board, too:

cciw.org has the '09-'10 conference schedule. Saturdays will be different, with many 5:00 starts.
With one exception, there will be a women's game first, followed by a men's.
I don't particularly like that, since men's fans will likely seep in during the 2nd halves of games and contaminate the atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure there are followers of both men's and women's basketball that aren't thrilled with the arrangement, but I think it's an unfortunate result of the current economic environment. Among followers of the women's game, I'm sure others share RogK's concern that the women won't be the main attraction. On the men's side, it'll be more difficult for coaches to conduct and monitor, and fans to follow, junior varsity progress.

Speaking of that, what will happen to the JV games on Saturdays?  Will they be at 2:30 or 3:00, or not happen at all?

Any of my fellow Wheaton fans know who Schauer will have coaching on the bench with him? I assume Nate Frank isn't staying around after being passed over.
