Thanks for the information ds. I'm looking forward to seeing how the game goes for Augie. Sounds like they should take this one, but I don't take anything for granted in the this conference. I'll go out on a limb and predict that IWU will win by 20 over Millikin. I'll take Augie by 15 over Wheaton. I wish I was close enough to catch one of the games. I'd settle for being in the same time zone.

The latest CCIW Game Notes...

The league office does a nice job with this.

Regarding the 37 points by freshman Drew Gensler of Millikin in the Big Blue's win at Elmhurst, I'm wondering if it was a record for points scored in a CCIW game by a freshman...or maybe points scored in an individual's first-ever CCIW game.  The league has been around 59 years, but it seems like Gensler's 37 points would have a chance to be some sort of record.

Given the fact that Millikin owns most of the CCIW's scoring records (due to their run-and-gun philosophy back in the 1970s when Leon Gobczynski & Co. were running rampant), if Gensler doesn't now own those records I'm sure that some other player for the Big Blue does.

Mr. Ypsi

I would have guessed that Jack Sikma would hold that record, though not necessarily for FIRST CCIW game.  I rummaged through both the IWU and CCIW recod books, but couldn't find a one-game freshman record listed.  But surely Jack went off for at least that much sometime in his freshman year, didn't he?

Jason Wiertel scored 43 in a game vs. Wheaton as a freshman in 1999.

IWU down 5 -- 25-20! -- at halftime in Decatur.

Elmhurst 78  Carthage 73

Elmhurst moves to 1-2 in the CCIW, Carthage falls to 0-2.

Rough game for the Red Men.  According to the internet broadcast, there were a lot of questionable calls in the last two minutes.  Carthage was down 12 in the 1st half.  Elmhurst was down 5 with 3 minutes to play.

FREE THROWS
Elmhurst  24-32
Carthage 6-12  (OUCH!!)

Carthage shot 67% in the second half and 53% for the game.

Carthage scorers
Jeffrey   25, 7 boards
Amani   15
Morrison   9
Lee   9

Elmhurst
Michael   16
Ihlenfeldt   15
Martin   15
Strzemp   14

Elmhurst outrebounded Carthage 31-29 (no individual totals reported other than Jeffrey)
Carthage was plus 1 in turnovers 15-16

tough loss for Carthage...Elmhurst makes a nice comeback down the stretch.

Harrigan leads Augie with 30 points tonight and was 10-10 from the FT line. After going 3 for 9 from the FT line in the first half, Augie hit 11 of 11 in the second half. It sounded like Harrigan not only made the winning shot but also stole the ball to set up the shot. McAdams Thornton had 15 points, and Nate Swetalla led in rebounds with 8. Wheaton missed some key FTs down the stretch that would have sealed a victory with time running out. Augie was a tad on the lucky side tonight, but a wins a win.

Stat

He thought he was a guard with those 43.  Leading everyone down the court, got the ball for multiple layups.  Bad shooting night for Wheaton, led to multiple transition points.

augie_superfan

Augiefan covered it all but just to add some things:

Looks like with Augie down 6 and with 1:17 to play, Harrigan hit a 3 and was fouled.  He then made the FT to put Augie down only 2.  A missed Wheaton 3 and then a foul on Harrigan led to Harrigan tying the game with 2 FTs and :40 to play.  The play-by-play then says turnover on Harrigan with :10 left but it must have been a steal by Harrigan.  Then Harrigan hits a 3 with :01 left on the clock to win it.

So Harrigan scores the last 9 Augie points all in 1:17.  What a year he is having.  Nice to see Augie pull this one out.

Nice win by Elmhurst tonight, maybe they can continue to get back on track on Sat. night.

The turning point in the game tonight was with three mins. left. Elmhurst was down by 5 at this point. Chris Martin took the ball to the hoop and got fouled and made the bucket. He was at the line and Bosko is riding the ref who proceeds to T him up. Ihlenfeldt then steps to the line and makes the two freebies. This really helped out the Jay's with 2 free buckets. Elmhurst then went up and held on.

Stat

Bosko with the T within 4 minutes?  Free throw stats look one sided.  I mean they hardly play defense anyway, to garner that many fouls.

Time for some medication.

What the heck is going on in this league? Harrigan scores 9 points in the last 1:17 (23 in the second half) to bail out the Vikes. Down by six, he gets a four point play to bring them to within two. Then he hits two free throws to tie it at 61 with 40 seconds left and, finally, nails a 3 with one second left to win it. Unbelievable. I didn't make it down to Carver but it sounds like they were very lucky to win this one. It looks like the Titans are struggling as well, squeaking by Millikin 68-60 in OT. Elmhurst gets a good win at Carthage. It looks like North Central is the only one of the contenders really playing well at the moment. I'm not sure what to make of it all.

Mr. Ypsi

dansand,

What you should make of it is that this is (at least arguably) THE toughest, most balanced league in the country!

There are NO gimme nights in the CCIW!

Some are tougher than others, but there AIN'T no gimmes!

Most years I defer to the WIAC as the oveall toughest, but this year I think they are 'only' third - 1. CCIW, 2. UAA, 3. WIAC, 4. 'take your pick'.

Final in Chicago:  North Central 78  NP 62  Yes, King Dennis, I attended the game.  My older son had youth group changed to Wed so I was blocks away from the gym.

NCC cruised early with a lead greater than NP's 14 points.  NP didn't quit, and NCC became less competitive when Simmons took a breather.  Thus, the score with 14 minutes to play in the second half was 46-39.

Simmons is definitely a first-team all CCIW player.  Tonite, he had inside moves and hit the trey.  He finished with 26 points.  Sour grapes:  He finished the game with one foul despite the repeated and obvious strong-arm clear-out.

NP was led by Gordon's 19 and Mathisen's 12.  NP needs to learn ASAP they MUST look to Mathisen first.  If NP expects to win, Mathisen needs to shoot at least 15 times per game.  Why this is difficult to understand I do not know.

I'd wager that there were more NCC fans present than NPU fans.  NPU is on break and the gym was virtually silent.  Especially since Sager was not there.
