Quote from: True Basketball Fan on January 14, 2006, 09:01:41 AMMartin has 47 steals in 14 games this season.  I guess the other team is just giving the ball to him, and he's not doing anything. :P

Martin leads the league in steals this season, CCIW games only. He led the league last season with 3.21 spg. The runner-up, Drew Wessels of Augie, was way back there with 2.57 spg, and the third-place pickpocket, Wesleyan's Adam Dauksas, led a tight pack of others with 1.57 spg. That's a pretty huge lead for Martin. In 2003-04 Martin ranked fourth in the league in steals, trailing three guards.

Steals aren't the be-all and end-all of defense. There's a lot more to being a good defender than racking up gaudy steals statistics. But you can't be a bad defender if you're stealing the ball more than anyone else in the conference.

Greg, interestingly I think I was the last to know about this Penn Atlantic webcast thing.  I found about it when I read the CCIW press release on D3hoops.com yesterday.

Penn Atlantic must have contacted WJBC for the rights for to audio, and I am scheduled to do the play-by-play for that game.  No real reason for the station to tell ole Q, the part-timer, but it was kind of cool to hear about this.

I watched the Grinnell/Lawrence game last night.  It was very nice to be able to watch two teams play that I'd normally not get a chance to see.  One recommendation I have for anyone interested in watching that Jan. 25 Augustana @ IWU game live online, make sure you have access to a high speed connection.  It's not worth trying to watch without a DSL/broadband-type connection.

Amelianovich has had outstanding defensive games against the two best small forwards he's been asked to guard man-to-man so far this season - St. Xavier's Jason Genova and North Central's Daniel Walton.

6-5/205 Genova (15.3 ppg, 11 FGA per game) was just 3-7 from the field vs IWU, scoring 10 pts, in 36 minutes.  6-5/200 Walton (18.3 ppg, .660 FG%) was 5-15 from the field, finishing with 12 points.

Are there any Chicagoland posters out there crazy enough to attempt a doubleheader tonight?  I'm considering the first half of the NPU/Wheaton game, followed by the second half of IWU/Elmhurst.  They should both be competitive games.

Pete, it's days like today that make me wish CCIW schools would be a little creative in terms of scheduling tipoff times so that people could catch more than one game. It's not necessarily written in stone that a game has to be played in the evening; today's biggest D3 game, Calvin @ Hope, is an afternoon affair.

It would be particularly good if they did it on early-January days like today, when most (if not all) of the CCIW's member schools are not in session. Nobody would thus be inconvenienced if the game was moved to an afternoon tipoff, and the schools would be more likely to draw people such as you or I who would be interested in seeing a game at Wheaton and then a game at Elmhurst (or vice-versa).

Unbelievable!  I still think this CCIW race is WIDE OPEN.

Augustana  73
Carthage    70

Harrigan:  19 pts on 5-14 shooting, 6-6 FT (some big ones down the stretch)
McAdams-Thornton:  13 pts on 6-12 shooting, 7 boards
Nate Swetalla:  11 pts

Augie shot 49.1% for the game; 11-21 from 3 pt land

Kyle Jeffrey:  29 pts

Augie got great contributions from everyone on the team tonight.  Oliver Rorer made some big baskets and finished with 8 pts.  Brusveen hit 2 three-pointers tonight.  A nice road win tonight against a tough Carthage team.
