I will be walking the tightrope without a net tomorrow night. Tune in Thursday evening at 7:30 to NPU's live webcast to watch the Vikings take on Trinity International. I'll be doing the game without my esteemed broadcast partner Rob Berki, who's out of town. Just a camera, a student cameraman, a laptop, a microphone, and my big mouth. Should be fun.

.....and more than adequate.   ;D

I'm planning on being at that game, Greg.  I could be your roving sideline reporter if you want............

Uh-Oh!

I think I'm going to be in the same boat (except no camera) on December 20 when Augie plays Monmouth. Chris is headed to Arizona, leaving "Ron Santo" in charge of the play-by-play! ...Boy oh boy...Jeez!

i'll be at north park's game tonight, too (unless the snow is too hard) - maybe we should sit close to gs and heckle him.  ;D
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Don't know if that's your real hair or not, Dan, but either way ... don't sit too close to the overhead lights, big boy!

Gotta echo Red.Men1's thoughts on this one. If Bosko Djurickovic, with his five national championship rings and six appearances in the Final Four, is the least-effective coach in the CCIW, can you imagine how successful he'd be if he was even halfway effective? ::)

Mr. Ypsi

Greg, I was thinking the same thing - can you imagine how many rings he'd have if he was any good?! ;)  Of course, there's also the little matter of Carthage probably having a whole lot less talent if the best player in d3 wasn't there to play for his old man!

True, but there's some chicken-or-the-egg issues at work there. I think that Steve Djurickovic would be the first to tell you that a lot of his success as a basketball player comes from the fact that he's spent his entire life learning the game from his father. (And his mother, too, for that matter.) It's not demeaning Steve to say that Bosko ought to get some of the credit for Steve being the player that he was when he first donned a Carthage uni two years ago.

Dennis, if the crowds are as scant as you and others have been documenting, we might not even have to sit that close to be heard.

Has anyone seen the 2 freshmen post players at Carthage?

Not in-season, but I did see them in the summer leagues and what they have done so far this fall seems to match what I saw in the summer, for what that's worth.

CCIWFAN3

Thanks.  I see that Guzman isn't playing more than 16-17 minutes a game, but he's puting up good numbers.  I wonder if it's just a conditioning thing.

That would also match what I saw this summer.....

CCIWFAN3--

Pete has it right. A conditioning issue.

Actually, I have seen both play in season. Both are very good basketball players. As indicated, Guzman is, l;ets say, not the best conditioned athlete. In looking at him, you would not necessarily even think he is a basketball player. Physically he more closely resembles a guard on the FB team. Goes to show how deceiving appearances can be as he can play.
Bosko will get good results from both players on the court. As I have detailed previously, which some people did not want to hear, both players have either been exposed to or have been a part of behavior off the court that could possibly curtail their on court time should that behavior manifest itself in the future. Hopefully, both players have matured with age and experience, and will enjoy full college careers, which certainly seem promising in light of what they have accomplished early in their first year.

Albion 84
NCC 79 (OT)

- Reid Barringer: 28 pts
- David Twyman: 17 pts, 9 assists
- Derek Raridon: 16 pts, 6 reb

NCC led almost he entire game, but gave up the lead in the final 30 seconds.  The Cards were down 2 with 1.3 seconds to play in regulation, inbounding the ball with the length of the floor to go...and in the boneheaded play of the season, Albion fouled Kyle Julius, who was trying to receive the in-bounds, before the ball was even thrown in.  In a one-and-one situation, Julius knocked down both clutch FT's to tie the game.  NCC, playing in its third overtime game in a row (3 OT @ Aurora, OT vs Illinois College, tonight), got down early in the extra 5 minutes and never recovered...it also did not help that Derek Raridon fouled out early in OT.

North Central looked very good offensively during most of the game tonight @ Albion.  The Cardinals are a much better basketball team than I expected them to be in 2009-10.  A few random thoughts from the video stream I watched...

•   Shooting guard Reid Barringer is a player.  He reminds me so much of IWU's Sean Johnson.  Johnson is probably an inch or two taller, but they're so similar on the offensive end.

•   I think NCC freshman Derek Raridon is going to be an All-American someday.  I don't throw this name around lightly, believe me, but Raridon sure looks like a Bryan Crabtree (IWU '97) in the making.  Raridon not only has terrific size for a perimeter player (6-6), but he can put it on the floor already and get to the basket...something Crabtree couldn't do until his JR year.

•   Kyle Julius has to be one of the best 6th men in the CCIW.  He reminds me a lot of Ryan Burks (Elmhurst '09, now a distinguished poster here).  Julius is 6-4, can shoot the heck out of it, but like Raridon, can handle the ball very well.

•   North Central has no low post presence.  6-7 freshman starter Brandon Stanciel should develop into a nice player, but at the present time he's not much of a factor.  Senior David Twyman does a nice job slashing to the hoop and is a good player, so the Cards do score points in the paint, but I think NCC's lack of low post presence is going to be their achilles heal in CCIW play.

•   I also think NCC will really struggle to defend the good low post post players in the CCIW.  Albion didn't seem to have much inside, but several CCIW teams are strong down low.

Bob---

An excellent analysis
I would add:
*In addition to being a player, Reid Barringer is a leader. As a senior, he takes a leadership role on and off the court. Reid is also a good student.
*Predicting Derek Raridon as a future All-American may be a bit premature. Right now, I think his dad is very proud of him, and rightfully so, but I think that at this point, everyone involved with Derek would just like to see him continue to adjust well to college life, both academically and athletically. Derek is really a good kid who, although he has a wealth of basketball talent, does not have a big head. There is no doubt he will continue to improve, and with that further development future All-American status is a distinct possibility, especially if he can add some muscle strength to his 6'6" frame.
*As Kyle Julius could be starting right now, both for NCC and for other CCIW teams, its not hard to imagine him as the conference's premier 6th man. While its likely he would prefer to start, I personally like him coming off the bench, where he presents an especially difficult match-up challenge to the opponent.
*David Twyman is at his best when going to the hole. His quick 1st step enables him to get past defenders. At "only" 6'3" he is an incredible leaper and, I'll lay odds the best rebounder under 6'4" in the CCIW.
*While waiting for 6'7" Brandon Stanciel to fully develop, NCC will struggle in the low post on both ends of the court. They definitely need more of an inside presence to be among the most successful teams. Brandon will improve, but this will likely won't happen overnight.
Albion had a nice combination of quickness and strength, more so than might have been evident on the stream you saw.
Also, the refs were very lenient last night as far a hand checking. Perhaps this is a MIAA trademark, but Albion defenders often had BOTH hands on their man without being whistled for a foul. And no, I'm not saying this is why NCC lost.

For NCC, where did 6-8 freshman Joe Meyerhoff go?  After noticing he hasn't played a minute this year I checked the roster, and he's not there...

http://northcentralcardinals.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

Unfortunately a combination of family financial difficulties, coupled with a back problem, have forced 6'8" Joe Meyerhoff to withdraw for now. Joe was looked at as being that dynamic force in the middle for NCC.
