Red.Men1,
I confess my statement about Coach D could have been viewed as disrespectful.  It was not meant to diminish what the man has accomplished in the past as "Coach of the Year" and a former National Champion. But, in my opinion, Coach D has not been effective at Carthage College.  A record of 118 and 91 in conference play is not exactly an overpowering winning percentage.  A record of 43 and 41 (CCIW) over the last six years is even less impressive.  While I believe Coach D is one of the most entertaining coaches in the CCIW and, based on his distinguished past, someone who deserves respect, I don't believe he is a threat to win another Basketball Times "Coach of the Year" or national championship.
For Coach D's and his son's benefit I hope I am proven wrong.

Methinks your purview is limited.

Yes, Carthage has hovered around .500 the past several seasons... but Bosko turned around a pretty bad program and made them contenders.

Carthage won conference championships 3/4 years to start this decade, made it to Salem once and was one basket away from making it a second time.  And Carthage has earned only 4 CCIW championships in 64 seasons.  And get this... the 3 conference titles at Carthage are greater than the 2 he won at North Park.

He's 217/118 according to his bio on the Carthage site... that's 65%.  And Bosko is 109-74 (.596) in the CCIW over his Carthage career.  In Carthage's history, they're 328-444 (.425) coming into this season in CCIW play and 705-837 (.457) overall.  Take Bosko's numbers away and they drop to .372 in the CCIW and .406 overall.  He's averaging better than 3 wins per year in the league more than prior to his arrival.

I'm not sure what you want... but if it's Carthage as it was before Bosko, then expect worse, not better.

And in terms on National Championships...  Teams have to be great to be in a position to win a championship... but they also have to have a little luck.  Even in situations where the sectionals are loaded and Salem is a relative breeze (UWSP in 04-05, Wash U last year), there still are extremely tough games.  Wash U went to OT twice last year.  In 03-04 for Point's first championship, they hit half court shots on back to back nights going into the locker room at halftime... and the game against Lawrence went to OT.

To aspire compete for National Championships is one thing.  To expect it is something completely different.  Dennie Bridges only won one.  Bill Harris didn't win any.  Bosko's already got two (well, 5 if you count the assistant coach years).  It may be a bit much to ask.

steve d is the man

Bosko is the man! He has made the Carthage basketball program into the stellar program that it is today

Well, somebody wasn't the man.  They just gave up a 9 point lead in the second half and lost to Calvin 72-69.

Mr. Ypsi

Carthage falls to Calvin, 72-69.  Steve D had 25, but was neutralized by John Mantel who had 24 with 9 rebounds.

PointSpecial,
Thank you for your comments about Coach D.  I respect your position and I agree with you that my purview is limited.  I like this board for it's openness and respectful dialogue.  Your horizon is much greater than mine and your CCIW experience far exceeds my limited time following men's basketball. Unfortunately, sports in general fosters a 'what have you done for me lately' perspective in true fans.
Basketball is like the stock market, past performance does not always indicate future succes.  Hopefully, my fear that Coach D's ineffectiveness does not materialize again for the seventh time in seven years.

They are a machine.

After watching this, I feel real good about IWU's performance vs Wash U.

(Wash U leads 42-16 now.)

McKendree making a big comeback in the second half.  Only down 13.  At a timeout, announcer says, "McKendree coming out with a few haymakers here in the second half".  Great old-school line.

Wash U is now only up 48-42.  Click on the link that Q provided.  This has become a great small college basketball game!

#20654
Ron Rose and IWU thought they had 6-7 Brad Copelin, #30 (O'Fallon H.S.), until McKendree came in at the very last minute with a scholarship (after Copelin had a monster game in the state Final Four in Peoria).  Man would he look good in green.
