Interesting scores but not ones destined to convince anyone the league is very strong this year. However, I can certainly buy into the argument that the league is totally unpredictable this year.

Late-night final from the Left Coast:

North Park 89
Whittier 80

* Nick Williams: 24 pts, 7 rebs
* Nick Hoekstra: 18 pts (4-5 trey), 5 reb
* Shaun Collins: 14 pts (4-7 trey), 5 rebs, 5 asts
* David Williams (?): 14 pts
* Emmanuel Crosby: 10 pts, 6 rebs

NPU shot a season-high .585 from the field, and did all right from three-point land as well (12-24). Whittier shot .508 from the field, though, so the defense wasn't exactly sparkling for the Park. The stat I like the most is the season-high 22 assists for the Vikings.

NPU started out slow and found itself in an early 22-9 hole, but a 16-2 run brought the Vikings right back into it. The lead seesawed back and forth until the half ended with the Poets up, 39-38. About three minutes into the second half, NPU broke a 43-43 tie and went on an 8-0 run to take control of the game. From then on the Vikings had a lead that varied between six and thirteen points, and they were not seriously threatened in crunch time.

I rather doubt that David Williams figured in this game, since he's a freshman whose only varsity minutes came in the second half of the romp over Caltech the other night. Davone Robinson is not listed in the live stats as having played, and I suspect that the live stats operator confused the two Vikings.

A solid road win for the Vikings, who now get a week off for Christmas before preparing to face UW-Superior in the crackerbox on the 30th.

could be anytime! i might go on air at 4:30 and share my thoughts regarding universal health care, interest rates, unemployment, religion, or my favorite christmas gifts of all time. On the other hand, it will probably start at 7:15.

Greg,
Season stats for North Park show David Williams with 20 points scored through 10 games which includes the game against Whittier. He scored 2 against Carroll U., 4 against Cal Tech, and the 14 attributed to him for the Whittier game would make 20. Stats also show that Davone Robinson only played in 9 games. I guess it's possible that North Park based their season stats on wrong info from the Whittier box score but that box score does show #11 Williams (which is his correct number) coming off the bench and playing 19 minutes. It also shows the usual 4 starters, for the past 4 games(Avery, Crosby, Russell, and Nick Williams,) with the 5th starter being Nick Hoekstra in place of Davone Robinson, who normally is a starter. The David Williams sighting just might be correct.

David Williams is a classic example of what's called a "filler" at the scorer's table. The game goes incredibly fast for the person who has to key the play-by-play info into the laptop for live stats, and even if he or she has a spotter to assist him or her, it's nevertheless not always possible to stay on top of who is in the game and who isn't. Believe me, anyone who works at a scorer's table will tell you that that's no indictment of the live stats operator. It's hard work.

When an unknown player is in the game, or there is some sort of discrepancy in the live stats PBP, the operator will often pick a player who isn't likely to get into the game (and is thus unlikely to produce stats of his own) and will assign him whatever anomalous statistics (minutes, shots, rebounds, etc.) happen to be present. Last night it occurred in the live stats late in the NPU @ Whittier game, when I was surprised to learn here in Chicago that Sam Schwartz had picked up a rebound for North Park. Sam Schwartz is a freshman with a broken foot who has yet to don a Vikings uniform for anything other than team picture day. At the next timeout, Schwartz's rebound disappeared and was reassigned to another Viking; the live stats operator had had time to catch up during the timeout and correct himself, thereby removing the "filler".

David Williams has borne that role at the scorer's table as a statistical "filler" for NPU in a couple of games this season, including the game against Carroll. Game and season statistics are supposed to be cleaned up later by the SID, which includes removing the fillers (usually by consulting with the coaches, but by examining game tape if necessary); they haven't been cleaned up yet by NPU SID Kevin Shepke. Trust me when I say that he did not see the floor in a varsity game until the Caltech contest last Wednesday, and -- as I said on Wednesday night -- Caltech is so bad that everyone who suited up (including freshmen David Williams and Zach Dungee, who had never before seen varsity action) got into the game.

It's possible that for some as-yet-unknown reason Davone Robinson did not appear at all in last night's game and David Williams did. But it's not consistent with anything that NPU has done this year in terms of who's playing in varsity games and who isn't.

I could understand how a basket in the Carroll game could be mistakenly given to a wrong player but #11 in the Whittier game got a whole bunch of baskets, shots, free throws, rebounds, assists, turnovers, a 3 pointer, a foul and a steal credited to him. That's at least 20 times they made the same mistake. ;D But hey, if you tell me to trust you I'll trust you. Anybody that knows what kind of pudding they served the night the Titanic went down is certainly going to know the lineup for his favorite college hoops team. ;)

It sounds like the official scorekeeper (with the book) didn't go over roster changes with the rest of the crew at the scorer's table.  I always double-check roster changes with each coach, then pass along changes to the PA announcer and the person doing data entry.

AndOne

mr_b----

Sounds like you may have indeed diagnosed the problem. Or perhaps the scorekeeper forgot to even ask the coach if there were any roster changes to begin with. However, this seems like a stretch as I haven't been to a game this year where the scorekeeper didn't check with both coaches before the game. I know the North Central scorekeeper and she always makes it a point to check for any roster changes, and then inform the announcer and stat crew. As you said, a likely breakdown at the scorekeeper/stat crew level.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.
