MacMurray as in downstate Illinois MacMurray or as in Texas McMurray?  I'm never sure which school is the Mac and which is the Mc.  Not surprising for a guy named McBride with ancestors from the Scottish land of the Mac.  Go figure.

Pete, there are certain things a true D3 fan has to learn.  Things like...

* Whether MacMurray is in Illinois or Texas
* How to pronounce Buena Vista, Amherst, Wooster, and Medaille
* Where the hyphen in UMHB goes when not abbreviated
* When downtown Salem is the right call for a beer, and when downtown Roanoke is the best choice

It's a longterm learning process.

By the way, for the record, my reference above to Greg's estimation of NPU's opponent tonight was intended as a humorous poke at Titan Q's passion for all things Titan, including their opponents.  One of the reasons I keep coming back to this board is the collective wisdom/experience/passion for all things CCIW of guys like Bob, Greg, AndOne, Usee, etc.  Meeting each of them in person confirms my regard for them.  Just to be clear.

Pete--

I picked up on your reasoning re TQ's affinity to hype all things Titan or their evening's opposition even before you explained your reference. Guess I'm one up on my Mad Cow for the day!
Well, its off to the Hanger.

Hey- I'm real. just ask me. I have seen Greg and Titan Q at  basketball games but never met them. Only person I have met on here is Mugsy. He can vouch for me.

Separately, Wheaton beat Monmouth by 31 in california. Schauer said on the post game his team is rusty after having only 2 practices prior to the Hamline game. He said tomorrow's practice "won't be for women and children--just 2 hrs of old fashioned defense".  He said he is not happy with his team's performance in either game so far.

NPC-Alum

I went over to the Crackerbox to check out UWSP and was pleasantly surprised by a basketball game.  Ro Russell hit two free throws to send the game to OT (after NP lost a 10 point 2nd half lead).

In the end, the whatever they call folks from Superior WI's bastion of higher education (sorry - no clue as to the nickname) just shot the ball too well for NP to beat them.  UWSP shot lights out all night and took a W home (by 4 in OT) because or that.

On the other hand, can we accept the vouching of a guy who thinks he's a 5'3" NBA player, yet can't even spell it right? ;D

Maybe you are BOTH fictitious (it would improve my position in various pickems). :P

UW-Superior 80, North Park 76 (OT)

* Emmanuel Crosby: 16 pts, 8 rebs
* Issa Avery: 14 pts, 10 rebs
* Roshawn Russell: 14 pts
* Nick Hoekstra: 11 pts, 8 rebs
* Nick Williams: 11 pts

The Vikings lost a game that really slipped through their fingers. After falling behind by 14 early in the first half, NPU whittled the UW-Superior lead down to six at the intermission and then went on a 23-7 run in the first seven-plus minutes of the second half to take a 51-41 lead. But the Vikings couldn't sustain it, the 'jackets came roaring back to make it a close game again, and at the end of regulation it came down to who could make the last shot. NPU had a chance to take the lead with the shot clock turned off and down by a point, but Nick Williams pulled the trigger too quickly and took a fadeaway 23-footer that banged off the rim with seven seconds left. UW-Superior collected the rebound and made a free throw, but Ro Russell sped the ball down the floor with four seconds left, was bumped at the top of the key, made both ends of a one-and-one, and sent the game into overtime.

Unfortunately, the Vikings lost Nick Williams fifty seconds into overtime when he fouled out. The loss of Williams and the disparity in free throws were the difference -- the Yellowjackets made all six of theirs in OT and went 15-19 (79%) from the stripe for the game while the Vikings only went 11-18 (61%) for the game. With all of the rest of the stats being almost dead even, the much better job that the 'jackets did a the line explains why they left town with a W. Bad free-throw shooting will cost you games, and it cost the Vikings tonight.

Paul Brenegan was scrambling to put together combinations that could match the bigger Yellowjackets tonight. The injury bug has really ravaged the NPU lineup, as Davone Robinson (the team's best defender) and Christian Alsing (the backup center) both rolled their ankles in recent practices and joined Phil Schniedermeier and Kendall Greer in street clothes on the sidelines tonight. Still, I don't want to lean upon injuries as an excuse for why the Vikings lost this game. UW-Superior executed in a key aspect of the game (free throws) and North Park didn't. Simple as that.

North Central 102, Rockford 95

Reid Barringer scored 44 points, the highest total recorded by a Cardinal since Bill Warden's playing days back in the '50s, while Derek Raridon added 23 and Jon Knapczyk added 16 for North Central (6-4).

Millikin 83, Hardin-Simmons 74

The Big Blue erased a nineteen-point second-half deficit and came back to win this one in Mary Hardin-Baylor's gym. Charles Warren led the way with 20 points, while Joscar Demby added 19, Sedric Ferguson contributed 14, and Devin Demby chipped in 10 for Jimmy Millikin (5-6).

Wheaton 84, Monmouth 53

Wheaton took out its frustration from last night's loss upon hapless Monmouth, raising its record to 7-3 in the process. Tim McCrary led the way with 21 points, while Ben Panner added 17, Spencer Schulze scored 14, and Andrew Jahns and John Shackelford put in ten points apiece.

Incidentally, thanks to Pete McBride and Bill Waiksnoris for the Rockford @ NCC updates while I was delivering the NPU broadcast!

Not much doubt that the hottest things in Naperville this evening were the nets in North Central's Hanger/Merner Fieldhouse. Smokin' actually, from the almost constant friction of Reid Barringer shots ripping through the twine. For the evening, Barringer scorched the nets for 44 points, the 5th highest single game total in NCC history. Overall, he hit on 12 of his 23 shots from the field (52.2 percent), including 6 of 12 from downtown Naperville, and 14 of his 15 attempts from the line, as the Cardinals downed the Rockford Regents by a score of 102-95 in an old fashioned barn burner. As a footnote to the evening Reid, North Central's all time career 3 point leader, went over the 200 mark for 3 point shots made.
Do I hear a nomination for CCIW Player of the Week?

Almost lost as a result of being in the unenviable position of playing 2nd fiddle to Barringer's amazing night were outstanding performances by Danny Amelin and Robert Malone of Rockford, who scored 28 and 22 points respectively, and NCC's fabulous freshman Derek Raridon who dropped in 23 on 6/12 shooting (2/2 on 3s), and 9/10 FTs.

Almost as hot as the nets were the refs whistles as the seemingly never ending contest saw a total of 53 fouls called resulting in 69 free throws being attempted. For the night NCC hit 34/42 (81 percent) and Rockford 21/27 (77.8 percent)
Not a lot of either interior or perimeter defense was evident as the Regents shot 54.1 percent overall including 44.4 percent from beyond the arc, and the Cards hit on 51.7 percent of their total shots and 53.3 percent from 3 point land.

Another Cardinal who played a prominent role in the NCC victory was point guard Jonny Knapczyk who scored a season high 16 points on 6 /7  + 4/5. He also collected 4 rebounds and handed out 4 assists while only committing 1 TO.

Also noteworthy was the fact the Cardinals committed only 10 turnovers. A remarkably low total in a free for all type game that saw 11 steals and 9 blocked shots in addition to the previously noted 53 fouls.

Either you or Bob will be unhappy next Monday when the award is announced. I'd add USee, but I suspect that he's given up on his Jake-Carwell-for-POTW campaign.

GS - "But the Vikings couldn't sustain it, the 'jackets came roaring back to make it a close game again, and at the end of regulation it came down to who could make the last shot. "

After taking a 51-41 lead on their next six possessions North Park had five turnovers and a terrible throw at the basket.

GS described the action - which was hot (in a very cold gym), physical and even bloody at times, but this is still a North Park team that relies too much on one and one and the 25 foot heave.

I don't see how they can win a game in the league - too bad - some talented kids, but they just don't have a clue how to sustain anything on either offense or defense.

They play hard - "so do washing machines"

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

UW-Suprior is tall with one guy listed at 6'11", another at 6'8", and three at 6'6".  Viking C Phil S. has been out quite a while and is sorely missed!

I look forward to watching NP win a conference game in the first week of 2010.

Q:  Were you at game #10?  I remember the student section cheering, "It's all over", in the waning moments of the first half and Greg and I grimaced, cringed, and tried to shush them.  Great comeback, no doubt.  I'm surprised the game does not rank higher.

Once a metalhead, always a metalhead.  Matthew 5:13.

Greg,
Couldn't help but notice this reference to Davone Robinson's injury. Also saw that the box score for the UW-Superior game shows #11 David Williams starting in place of Robinson. Just wondered if this doesn't explain why David Williams might have also played in North Park's previous game against Whittier College and was credited for scoring 14 points. If you recall, Robinson wasn't listed in the box score for that game and you thought David Williams was a "statistical filler" instead of actually playing in the game and that his stat line was really Robinson's or someone else's. Your thoughts?
