I play racquetball every Thursday at the Washington University Athletic Complex and I happened to be at the front desk a few hours ago when the Titans showed up.  Not much fanfare in Division III.  The team was welcomed by a party of two, yours truly and a student I know on work-study duty.

Very serious guys, it seems.  The first to the desk said only four words (I kid you not): We are here for basketball.  Indeed they are.

I was also walking by the arena when the Bears, who had finished their warm-up, were handing over the floor to Titans.  Lots of hugs and handshakes.  Obviously, some of these players go way back, but they all know and respect each other well.

Think I'll have some shirts made for the boys for next season...

Panner hits the first shot of the second half.  36  25.

Is everybody's connection down?  Don't know whether to restart or wait it out.

petemcb

Wow.  While I was gone, Wheaton built it up to 43  28 with just under 16 minutes to play.

Sorry.  Thought I was on it.  Must have clicked over.

#22731
Final from Belton, TX...

Wheaton 73
Mary Hardin-Baylor 58

* Andrew Jahns: 25 pts, 3 reb, 6 assists
* Ben Panner: 21 pts, 4 reb, 5 assists
* Tim McCrary: 17 pts, 10 reb, 5 assists

This one was never close.  Wheaton looked bigger, stronger, and more skilled at almost every position on the floor.  UMHB looked overmatched on both ends most of the night.  Tim McCrary dominated the first 10 minutes or so and helped Wheaton established its lead.  His presence seemed to open up the perimeter in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half.  Andrew Jahns and Ben Panner were just firing up completely wide-open 3's, and making most of them.

As I posted on the In-game Updates board, I think having media timeouts is huge for Wheaton.  After watching D3 games, have you ever gone to a D1 game and wondered why coaches ever have to sub?  Those media timeouts are long and frequent.  For a team with very little depth, this is quite a bonus.  (Not that Wheaton needed much help tonight.)

Impressive showing by the Thunder on the road in Round 1!

Hmmm. Dunno about the UAA, but here in the CCIW, "We are here for basketball" is five words.

Perhaps this is an example of that Wash U austerity budget you were hinting at this morning, WUH. Five words now only count as four. :D

It's that WashU edumacation, versus a real CCIW education! ;D

They get TAs, we get professors. ;)

My tournament fantasy team is off to a nice start.

UMHB's poor free throw shooting and 3 point shooting lost this game for them. There was a lot of energy in the gym, but they had too many deficiencies to win against Wheaton. They had excellent free throw shooting and 3 point shooting; it killed UMHB all night.

On a bright note, I was able to say hello to Dave Lorenz who was there to cheer on Wheaton. Good to see him again, and I hope that Wheaton can go deep into the tournament.

I love this thread!

I have developed a reputation on the UAA board for getting almost everything wrong.  Not surprised by this.  In my head, I said four words because I thought I would type "We're here for basketball," which is actually closer to what he said.

I did watch about twenty minutes of the Titan scrimmage which is probably prohibited.  The teams shot from three point range on almost every possession.  And, hit most of them.  Maybe the purpose of the scrimmage was to work on the perimeter game.  I will say, should the teams meet, I am a little concerned about our ability to guard the perimeter.

Well, here in Texas, we would use the contraction and make four words.

We're here for basketball!

But then again, we say things like y'all, howdy and fixin' to.  :D

EDIT:  WUH posted before I could post mine!

Incidentally, I figured I could watch the scrimmage because I lack the basketball IQ to pass on any details.

"Yeah, Coach Edwards, they shoot the three well, and the big guys seems quite good.  That is all I got."

I can add to your report.  The little guys are pretty good too.  ;)
