Titan Q

The Titans did not play well this evening on either end of the floor, but Stevens Point was clearly the better team.  The Pointers just have so many interchangeable parts, and so much size (not necessarily height, but muscle).  They were able to completely disrupt IWU's offensive scheme, which is hard to do with as many weapons as the Titans have.  On their offensive end, no superstars, but every guy on the floor can score.  That was the best team IWU has played this year and I don't think #2 (either Wash U or Carthage) was all that close really.

Sean Johnson was tremendous again.  He competed his tail off.  Sean just did not have any help out there.  The Pointers did a great job making it hard for Doug Sexauer to get the ball on the blocks, and when he did get it, there were two guys all over him.  The Titans were never able to take advantage and find the open man.  Stevens Point recovers so well on defense.

I wish the Titans would have played better, but now having seen UW-Stevens Point really click (they did not last night), I think it is pretty obvious they were the better team.

I'd agree that this is an excellent FF lineup.  Most years there is a dog that got in due to lousy tourney scheduling (or last year's fiasco where ANYONE from the midwest/west sectional would have won the title easily).  This year we have two former #1 ranked teams from the ODAC, plus two recent national champs - no canines in sight. ;)

Thanks to Coach Rose, Coach Stein, and Coach Feeney for the great season. Thanks Titans for an exciting and enjoyable season.  A lot of memorable moments this weekend in WI.  Good luck to the Pointers on Friday.

Congratulations to Ron Rose and the Titans on a great season.  23 wins, including 3 impressive NCAA tournament victories, signifies a big step forward in the program Coach Rose is building.  It's exciting to think of how tough the Titans should be in 2010-11.

That was a great tournament run...very glad I was able to be there for it.

Finally, a special congratulations to senior captain Sean Dwyer.  It has been a real honor watching Sean play basketball.  He has also done so much to bring the players behind him along, and his influence is a big reason the Titans had such a successful year.

Thank you and good luck, Sean.  You will be missed.

And a special thanks to the NCAA for balancing the bracket with a few simple moves. I hope this becomes a habit.

Bob and Greg,

Thanks for the kind words on Point.  I was unable to make it up there tonight, but it's good to hear from guys like you with a real observation of both teams.  It's nice to know they finally put together a real solid game.

Congrats to Wheaton, Carthage, and IWU on terrific seasons! Collectively, a 6-3 record in the dance is something those programs and the CCIW can be proud of! Kudos to the selection committee for taking 3 teams!

Just to clear up a little controversy from the second half last night...a quote from the Kenosha News

"After Djurickovic banked in a 3-pointer to cut it to 75-72 with eight seconds left, Johnson sealed the deal with two free throws with seven seconds on the clock."

And because of that banked-in desperation trey with eight seconds left, we can change this list (and Mike Krizman will have to update it on the CCIW website as well):

CCIW Two Thousand Point Club

player  school  final yr    pts
Leon Gobczynski  Millikin  1975  2635
Dave Shaw  Carroll  1977  2563
Mel Peterson  Wheaton  1960  2542
Kent Raymond  Wheaton  2009  2308
Jack Sikma  Illinois Wesleyan  1977  2272
Bill Warden  North Central  1955  2249
Jesse Price  Millikin  1969  2222
Scott Steagall  Millikin  1951  2127
Jason Wiertel  Carthage  2002  2113
Michael Thomas  North Park  1981  2085
Blaise Bugajski  Illinois Wesleyan  1984  2062
Marv Johnson  Wheaton  1951  2044
Justyne Monegain  North Park  1985  2039
John Laing  Augustana  1973  2035
Steve Djurickovic  Carthage  2011  2002

Congrats to Stevie D., although I'm sure that joining this elite club is small consolation for the fact that his team's season is over.

That means he has averaged just over 667 points his first three seasons.  An average (for him!) senior year puts him atop the list. :o

While this will be a noteworthy achievement if he attains it, lets not forget that almost every player on this prestigious list played prior to the 3 point shot being adopted in the college ranks. No doubt several of the top ranking players were successful on more than a few shots beyond the now established arc.

The 3 point shot was first used in a few conferences in 1980, and was made universal throughout the college game in 1986.

This is true, and I was wondering about that myself.  I'm pretty sure the trey would have added very little to the totals of Gobzcynski or Sikma (I have no idea about the style of play for Peterson or Shaw).  But note that even Kent Raymond couldn't crack the top three - it would still be a tremendous achievement.

Anyone know if the trey would have significantly helped anyone on the list (or added others to the list)?  (Even though he was a big, having seen Jesse Price on 5 or 6 occasions I suspect it would have added 50-100 points to his total; maybe more, since he might have stepped back a couple of feet and buried 'em more often!)

Saw Peterson several times and he had a nice touch on his shots.  Probably would have some three's.  On the oth3er hand, he played many playoff games as they won a National championship and I think were in the playoffs other years too.

I wonder if they played freshman in 'varsity' games back then... anyone know?

A good run for the. CCIW this year.  I would think Carthage & IWU should be top ten preseason next year, with Augustana in the top 20.  When does practice start! :D
