Does anyone know why Ed O'Callaghan from IWU gets zero playing time this year?

Edgewood leading NCC 38-32 with 10 minutes to play.

Preseason all-American Derek Raridon was 1-12 from the field, finishing with 3 points.  NCC was led by freshman guard CJ Goldthree with 14 points.

Raridon struggled in last night's game against Bluffton as well. Two really bad losess for NCC. However, their FB team didn't have any trouble scoring today.

#18 John Carroll 70
#5 Carthage 69

No video, but I listened to a lot of this one.  Carthage led by 10 or 12 at the half, but had all kinds of trouble with John Carroll's full-court pressure in the 2nd half.  The Red Men turned it over numerous times, but more importantly, it sounds like the pressure got Carthage totally out of their rhythm offensively.   JC was able to get back to even, and then to start slowly building a lead.

The Blue Streaks led by 6 with about 2:30 to play, when Carthage responded with a 6-0 run to tie it with about 1:00 to play.  JC scored to go up 2 with :50 to go, Carthage missed a shot, got an offensive rebound and missed another shot.  The Streaks went to the FT line up 2 with :15 to go, and made 1 of 2.  Carthage got the ball and JC fouled Steve Djurickovic with :09 on the clock.  Down 3, SD made both and the Red Men quickly fouled a JC player with 7.4 to go.  JC missed the front end, Carthage got the rebound, but Steve D missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Carthage could not consistently stop the Blue Streaks from scoring in this game.  It sounds like JC had a bunch of easy baskets, and that Carthage really had a hard time with their perimeter players.  I believe JC shot 58% in the 2nd half.

Ouf-of-region game - basically doesn't count for anything.  Very silly rule!

Went to the Carthage game against JCU.

Thoughts:

* Carthage looked fabulous in the last 10 minutes of the 1st half, pushing the lead to 13.

* Carthage then had a lot of trouble with the full-court press all of the 2nd half.  It wasn't pretty and even when they got past the press, they generally were out of synch on offense.  JCU was in foul trouble early in the half, but played enough in control not to end up with Carthage at the free throw line for the entire half (which is what I expected to happen).  They are a very good team.

* In the 2nd half, Bosko had Malcom Kelly and Mitch Thompson on the bench for a long time.  Which was weird, because Marlon Senior was getting absolutely chewed up by JCU's best player Maurice Haynes and Carthage was having trouble with the press and Kelly is a better ball handler than Mike Frey (who was on the court at that point).  Thompson had 4 blocks and was at least disruptive inside; Senior and Bauch (who also played in 2nd half) just couldn't handle Haynes.  This is where JCU extended their lead before Carthage came back.

* Carthage had a great look from Pace Bennett which would have tied the game with 29 seconds left and it rolled around the rim and fell out.  Max Cary got the rebound and was stuffed.  JCU ended up with the ball and was fouled (hitting one of two).  Steve D drove and got fouled (looking for an old-fashioned 3 point play).  The shot missed but he hit two free throws.  JCU was fouled with 7 seconds left, but missed the front end of the 1-on-1.  Steve D missed a 3-pointed as time ran out.  I think he would have been better driving and looking for a foul because his outside shot wasn't there all game.

* Thoughts on individual players:

* Steve D seemed a little off today.  I almost wonder if he is asked to do too much (espcially 2nd game in 2 days).  Outside shooting wasn't there at all.  The other thing was that JCU was trying to put pressure on him and not all of it in the friendly, sportsmanlike way.  Some hammering at him which doesn't cause him to lose his head, but maybe wears him down physically (which Bethany Lutheran was doing too).

* Max Cary looked good but got beat up a bit too.  Took a hard (but clean) foul in the first half and nearly had to come out and not take the free throws.  In the 2nd half, I think he got a groin hit but I couldn't tell.

* Mitch Thompson played solidly on D, but didn't get outside looks like he has in the first two games.

* Raul Guzman was in foul trouble the whole game.  The thing was 3 of his 4 fouls (in the 3 minutes he was on the court) seemed like crap calls to me.  The 4th, I didn't see as it was away from the ball.  He seems to now have a bullseye on his back and can't get away with anything.  He still had 5 points.  I am fairly convinced he could have really helped the offense in the 2nd half if he wasn't about to foul out.  I would have left him out there until he did instead of going with Senior as much, but then he would have just fouled out a minute later.

* Marvin Senior looks promising but couldn't handle a top notch player in Haynes.  I doubt he is a solution against the best that the CCIW has to offer yet, but I think he shouldn't have been out there as much as he was given the trouble Carthage was having with matchups.  He'll contribute this year though.

* Tyler Pierce is a good player, but I wish he were 20-30 pounds lighter as that weight isn't helping him at all.

Good game, but my kids were very bummed Carthage lost.

IWU 82
Ripon 74

* Travis Rosenkranz: 18 pts, 6 assists
* Matt Schick: 15 pts, 4 reb, 3 assists
* Doug Sexauer: 14 pts, 9 reb
* Dan Schouten: 14 pts (5-5 FG, 4-4 3-pt)
* Sean Johnson: 8 pts, 7 assists

* Scott Gillespie: 19 pts, 7 reb

http://www.iwusports.com/custompages/MBB/MBB2011/HTML/tip4.htm

IWU knocked down 14 3-pointers tonight vs Ripon to win the Titan Tip-Off Tournament.  Dan Schouten, making his first career start, was key in IWU erasing a 12-point 1st half deficit.  IWU had 21 assists tonight (on 28 total FG)...that's a big number.

The Titans' depth and balance continues to carry them with 2 starters out.  Lots of different guys stepping up each night out.  It hasn't always been pretty during these first 3 games, but IWU is finding ways to win games.

Ripon sounds like a good team that will do well in the MWC.  In addition to having two of the top returning scorers in Division III, they have a 6-11 post player that is starting to come around.  I bet they'll push St. Norbert.

While listening to IWU, I was watching Wheaton's 1st half vs Whitewater.  Holy smokes did the Thunder look good...like a completely different team than the one that played Manchester.

Interested to see how the 2nd half plays out.

If Whitewater ends up being the 2nd best team in the WIAC this year (which I doubt will happen), then it's not a good year to the north.

Wheaton looked tremendous tonight.

As I said on the in-game updates page, Whitewater only has 4 guys who averaged 10 or more minutes last year.  Their point guard last year was a freshman and he decided not to play this year, but I think that it's just going to take Whitewater some time to gel.

My money is on Platteville being #2.

There is a chance the bottom half of the league is pretty darn weak.

look out!! Wheaton rebounds from their season opening loss with a pair of decisive victories to win the Lee Pfund Classic.  Thunder defeat Covenant College 77-40 on Friday night in a game where they just overpowered the Scots.  Tonight the Thunder brought out the whupping sticks against #21 ranked UW-Whitewater 92-66.  Impressive weekend for the Thunder as they continue their tough nonconference schedule.
