4) The oft-mentioned "Titan Hammer" was 6th in the league in rebounding avg. with 7.4. So why no all-league honors (not even the 3rd team) for Mike Thomas in 90/91? I suspect a conspiracy and Q probably has the prime conspirator suspect being the WCTU (were they still around in 1991?).
Lanny, for the sake of you staying credible on this board, I hope the others know you aren't serious.  Besides, if anyone has read Coach Bridges' book, they know my role wasn't to try for MOP...it was MOPP - MOP Protector.
And all this time, I thought it was "MOPUP"

How brutally competitive is the CCIW this year?

IWU, Augie and NCC all highly ranked - all nearly top 10.  Yet the team everyone had tagged as in serious rebuilding mode (Wheaton) takes IWU into overtime AT Shirk and Augie needs a huge last minute barrage, including a 3pt shot to avoid an upset.  Yet Wheaton gets pounded by Elmhurst.

I suspect a number of upsets are still out there before the dust settles...

Mike Neal will be doing color commentary for the WJBC2.com broadcast/Penn Atlantic webcast of Augie @ IWU Wednesday.  Mike is the head baseball coach at Division III Blackburn College...

Mike has radio experience and I've worked with him before on WJBC2.com.  We will do our best Wednesday.

Our halftime guest will be Augustana S.I.D. Dave Wrath.

David I believe that Augie was a preseason number 4 three years ago...

Nope.  Augie was preseason #9 with one first place vote.  They moved to #7 in Week 1, then dropped to #14, then #16, then out of the poll for good by week 4.

Here's the preseason poll from 2003-04.

Don't believe, just look it up. We have all seven years' worth of our polls online.

We do not archive any of the preseason drek put out by Street & Smith's (Wilkes #10 this year) or any other preseason magazine.

David,

It was Street and Smith that ranked Augie #4 preseason in '03-'04, but you are right about d3hoops ranking Augie #7.
...........................................................
Aside from that i think that people are counting Augie as a light weight heading into their big week.  Im telling you that i was very impressed by how athletic Augie was against NC.  At time they can get up and down the court when they need to but they can also spread it out and get to the basketwhen they need to.  Although they were out rebounded i think that NC was very physical and grabbed mostly Defensive boards because Augie shot more time then NC did.  If nobody checks them out at the Shirk they could be in for a long night with Augie's athletes going to the boards...NC couldn't stop them from getting put backs in the finaly 4 min of play.  I am thinking about taking Augie by 6 at the Shirk (nobody jump me on this one because im only thinking about it) but i like the matchups we have.

I look at the 2001 CCIW Knuppel Team when I was the mascot  ;D

You were the mascot???????  You can't tell me you didn't catch some major grief from your fellow football teammates!!

Yes Cardinal Alum I was the Mascot during the 2001 CCIW Champ Knuppel Team.  One of my greatest memories at Elmhurst was being right under the basket when Knuppel hit the game winning 3 to beat Wash U. and send us to Chicago to play IWU.  That was the loudest I have ever heard our gym.
Most of the football players liked it because they would toss me around in the stands like a beach ball ;D
College is what you make of it, and even though I looked silly ( 7 foot tall Bluejay) it is what you remember most as an alum.
I think 3-4 upsets still remain during the regular season.  In fact, the way the crazy CCIW is right now, I don't think I would want to be a "favorite".

I was doing some thinking today and thought about the Elmhurst-North Central series as of late and recalled some really good games.

Going back to 02-03

                   At Elmhurst               At NC
02-03          NC 73                      Elm 90  OT
                   Elm  72                      NC 81

03-04          NC 75  OT                 NC 107
                   Elm 73                      Elm 100

04-05          Elm 72                      Elm 84  OT
                   NC  51                      NC  77

The series has been very entertaining to watch the last few years, and tomorrow is a pretty big game for both teams, neither team wants to slip to 3 losses at the half way mark of conference.

Jaybird,

7-feet? Did ya have a big papier mache head?

Jim Matson

79bird, that 2001 playoff game was one of only 4 basketball games I have ever seen at Elmhurst and by far and away my favorite.  The winning shot was as good as it gets.

I remember that game as the only time I've seen WETN broadcast a non-Wheaton basketball game.  I think it was a good time for those Wheaton announcers and certainly gave them a taste of being "objective" when calling a game (although I am fairly certain we were all Elmhurst fans that night).

Dansand,  The headpiece wasn't papier mache.  It was a mostly a felt/cotton material that came to a big point at the top placed around a helmet like cap which would be placed on your head.  The costume was hot as *ell!  ;D
Hiker-- Yes I would put that EC/WashU game as #3 most memorable... after graduation and well 1 other moment.  :P
You're right, I think the  entire CCIW fans become a backer of whichever team is in the playoffs.  I.E. When Wheaton football hosted Mt. St. Joseph's 2 years ago, I was there cheering for Wheaton with my Bluejays jacket.  We foes during the regular season, but heart to heart come playoff time.

Scott Trost will be on Hoopsville this evening at 8:00pm CST.  He is expected to announce that 6-2 junior Mike Harrigan (Brother Rice H.S.) will make his first start of the season to guard his cousin, 6-3 senior Rick Harrigan (Brother Rice H.S.).  "Brother Rice grads are very intelligent," Trost was overheard saying today at the Shirk Center.  "It takes a Crusader to guard a Crusader."

Interesting developments to say the least.
