NCC beats IWU, so NCC is in the tournament.

Now, we have a three-way tie for the last two spots.  If they all win out, Carthage would be odd man out, but IWU has to beat Augustana at home to win both, while Wheaton and Carthage have comparitively easier paths.

Boy, it'd sure be sweet to see NPU screw up Carthage's "easier path," although I'm not holding my breath.

Part of the game is coaching, the other part is execution. The Titans have struggled in both areas tonight.

Two teams are playing tonight, ALOTG. The Cards are playing very hard. But give the Titans credit; they've fought back from five down in OT tonight.

I hear you, but some times you have to call a spade a spade.
Play the best to be the best.

When's the last time Illinois Wesleyan only scored 58 points in an overtime game?

The two centers, Landon Gamble and Doug Sexauer, both had big games; Gamble had 16 and 10, while Sexauer had 19 and 7. The glaring stat of the game: Sean Johnson played 43 minutes but only scored four points on 2-13 shooting. Sounds like Kevin Gillespie had him locked up tonight.

I just got back from the game, Sean got some pretty good looks and the shots just didn't fall tonight.

Simple as that, sometimes they don't.

You are correct though that if Sean had brought his big game, North Central loses by 10 minimum.

But, alas, he did not.

Dunno about that. Looks to me like NCC imposed its will upon IWU to a certain degree; just look at the score. That's the score that Todd Raridon wanted, even with five extra minutes of basketball thrown in there, and the score that Ron Rose did not want to see his high-scoring team get dragged into. Also, IWU's rebounding weakness and NCC's rebounding strength showed up at both ends of the floor, as the Cards outrebounded the Titans, 36-28.

Methinks that you're not giving the Redbirds enough credit here.

I am saying if Sean's open looks fall, we win by 10.

All the credit in the world to North Central, they won.

Sean had open looks and was not "locked up" as you said.

The shots just didn't go.

If they did, I think the outcome is much different.

This senior class at IWU reminds me of the season with Dauksas, Amelianovich, Jones brothers, etc that didn't perform up to expectations and were lucky to get in the tournament and then made a run.  While this group is not as talented as that group, I think they could make a run if they could somehow get into the tournament.  It is going to be tough.  Having been at the game tonight, I would agree about Johnson having some good looks.

Fine. So he wasn't locked up. But I'll bet that any number of NCC shots that didn't go down were wide open, too. Gillespie has been a better three-point shooter than Johnson this season (both overall and in conference), and he only went 1-7 from behind the arc this evening. It just seems reductionistic to me to say that if Johnson's open shots fell, IWU wins by ten. What if NCC's open shots went down, instead? Perhaps the Cards win the game without needing to go into overtime to do it.

It appears to me that there's a lot more involved in the outcome than what you're saying.

Comparitively easier path.  North Park is 10-13 and Augustana is 22-1.

I'll tell you what, I'm fine with North Park taking out IWU Saturday so I don't have to wait around for Monday's AU-IWU game.

Illinois Wesleyan doesn't look like a tournament team. In fact, I don't think the Titans have looked like a Top 25 team at all this year, and I've said that on d3boards.com (although not in this room) dating back for quite some time. (I've said the same thing about Carthage.) Nevertheless, since this is essentially the same IWU team that made it to the Elite Eight last season, the potential is there.

I wasn't really bothered by the "easier path" talk, since it's the truth. I'd just love to see the Vikings play spoiler here. Knocking off one of the two preseason favorites (and possibly ruining their season in the process) would be great ... either one will do. Knocking off both would be even better, but NPU going 2-0 against Carthage and Wesleyan definitely falls into the "Ypsilantiesque fever dream" category. ;) :D

I'd be fine with NPU taking out Carthage on Wednesday, so I don't have to even wait around for the weekend! ;D

(Gee, Greg, everyone's suddenly rooting for the Vikings! :D)

And, gotta admit "Ypsilantiesque fever dream" is a cool phrase! ;D

I will be the first to say if IWU gets into a tournament at all, playing as they have, they won't go far.

too spotty, too hit and miss, can't protect a lead, can't extend a lead, etc.
